  1. hello all since moving house the old tdi 110 98 reg only goes around 3 miles a week to the supermarket, its not even getting warm before its turned off, i try to give it a 20 mile round trip to the mother inlaws once a month but this is now not getting done due to work. how often should i change the oil doing this kind of running. i last did it in december and have done 300miles since getting to temp around 3 times on that milage, the rest of the miles has been never a warm engine.
  2. there is reports on here somewhere that very good long lasting repairs can be made with the good old tie wrap, and another was to drill thru the ball and socket i think and pass some wire thru to secure it, save a lot of time,
  3. hi all tdi 110 s reg 98 got the oil light flasing and the buzzer after i set of this morning, i switch off and check all seemed ok, found the thread on this problem pointing to the oil switches, it says there are two to check, i found one on top of the oil filter housing but where is the other one, thanks
  4. aye but what about my cold start or restart problem, ive tried a new sensor as well. practically swopped everything.
  5. i think i did a post on this, our 98 110 , if i start form cold it fires up instantly, if by chance i switch it off after say driving 50 yards or just moving it in the drive it will then crank for an age before firing up, i too have tried new battery , starter, checked all filters etc etc, no one seems to have a cure, it shows no fault codes either, if i start it in the drive i have to leave it ticking over for a good 10 mins if i want it to fire up again without lots of cranking as the other chap said, just live with it, i think its another galaxy certain model engine type quirk.
  6. there is a kit available ive seen it on a website that someone posted, these kits can be obtained by the places that deal with hgv night heaters etc i think its webasto possibly. i looked into it last year , they quoted around
  7. is it a high milage ? as they get over 100,000 usually they get heavier and heavier, we put new one in at 146,000 then it was a light as a feather
  8. anyone else with this problem, first of all, try hitting the heater with a rubber mallet rather than dismantling and hanging it down to start with and save time. ours stop working after the summer , they seem to like an odd switch on in the summer months as well. so bridge th eterminal and let it fire up a few days. a tap with the mallet and off it goes again. quick and easy.
  9. just go onto ebay and look for an eberspacher pump, there are a few dealers on there and i got one for
  10. the aux heater wont cause the car to overheat, if its working ok you will hear it whining. has the small exhaust dropped of it allowing fumes to not be sent away from under the car . if the car overheats and the vents are stone cold after 30 mins of running id say its the water pump, possibly the impeller come off.
  11. sounds like the prob we had last month and many more have had its very possibly the seal inside the servo that has failed which causes a hiss that comes and goes. the fix though is expensive and long if it is the servo i coulnt find a used one and had to buy new
  12. turns out to be one of the 2 fans that is the culprit, is it ok to leave it alone and see what happens, will it just stop working, only makes the noise now and again. would the other keep working if one stops ? thanks
  13. hi all 98 tdi switched the air con on to clear some mist today and noticed when the compressor engaged there is an intermitent sort of grating sqwaking kind of noise. on and off. still there when revving the engine as well. goes away when ac turned off. does anyone recognize this , i wonder if the pulleys will still be ok when running with no air con on or could it cause a problem at anytime. the comp is quite old. thanks
  14. this happened to me s well, i nust pushed them back togehter and drill a small hole thruough both the link and the ball joint, then put some garden wire thru and twisted it to keep them togehter. only had to replace the wire once in 2 years, some do a more technical job anddrill and tap with a nut and bolt
  15. sensor is a small round object size of a thumb end . sits in a small clip that is attached to the passender side wiper linkage. easier to see if you remove the long pad panal under the wiper motor
  16. first , give the heater a tap with a rubber hammer , it may burst into life. if not check the metering pump wires are intact as they rot through. its in front of the fuel tank. it worked on ours 4 years ago when we got it. if no joy, bridge the sensor with a mini fuse , its located on the n/s wiper linkage under the bonnet. if no joy. you may consider fitting a new glow plug. be prepared for a long job as the screw rust up. the plugs you can get form gsf car parts. beru GH001 around
  17. the mk 1 had a 3kw unit and the mk 2 a 5kw unit. the 5kw is a little bigger but still fits as i have one on mine. as long as your car has one multi plug and the heater has one lead coming from it then just plug in and it should work . some units have a second lead with a smaller plug on as well. i think this is for the remote control timer. i dont think many have that. they are both the same , they both have ametering pump fitted in front of the fuel tank that draws fule from a T joint on the fuel pipe. it goes thru the pump to the heater. the brain of the heater starts the pump i think and decides if its going to work. thye are sometimes on ebay but you take a chance that they work. a recon unit is uaully a coulpe hundred pounds. a new dealer one is around 4-500.
  18. TRY G.S.F car parts, they have branches all over, up to around 04 /54 its a beru gh001 thats the beru stock number they use, this has a nut fixing . later models have a dealer only plug with 2 wires attached
  19. i think if you find your booster heater up under the car and look to the centre of the car on the same sill side, i think the compensator is located up behind the sill , i think it is anyway. i could be wrong but im sure my monkey pointed it out one day while repairing the booster heater.
  20. i was motorcareman when i ran a spares shop, i sold it as i got sick of it. you can get the plugs from g.s.f branches. ask for a beru gh001, that plug covers most models up to around 04/05 reg, thats the stock number not the part number. any branch shoul dbe able to supply as they keep a stock at a central warehouse. around
  21. my so called fitter an expert ive known years and trust for his work had fitted the starter but left a big plastic thing off. i found it under the airbox. i looked in the haynes book at the starter and this plastic thing sits on top of the starter and the wires pass thru it. its curved in shape and does indeed cover over a plug in terminal on the starter motor. its now coverd as i have refitted it and you cant see the terminal. it seems very far fetched that water has run down as we do park it overnite on a very slight incline on the drive, run onto the starter and pooled then when we try to start it , it in effect has bolied the water and made a steam hissing sound that has occured no more as its not rained since. hopefully its just been bad luck. but once again it could be yet another tdi galaxy problem to be aware of. thanks
  22. im wondering if the water is a possibility, could this have happened, although you may need to know about electricity and water it rained during the night before this happened. on turning the key the starter was totally dead, no clicking , nothing. then when released the hissing started very loud hissing that my neighbour could hear 50 yards away. we had a new starter put on last week, i noticed the rubber boot was not put back over the terminals on the starter. could water somehow have run onto the area where the cables are and pooled. then it isolated the starter during the first try. then somehow the water boiled with the heat form the battery and made the noise. after the noise stopped, i left it 30 mins, went back and this time the starter engaged but hissed aggain. since then we have had no trouble and no rain. can water and car electrics make very loud hissing ? any scientist out there ?
  23. no. tried to start the car but nothing happened, then on switching off, the hissing started. quite loud and for around 30 secs with ignition off.
  24. hi all 1.9 tdi 110 98 s reg odd thing happend this morning. put key in car, turned on, the ignition lites come on , turned the key to start and nothing. nothing at all. then turned key back ,and all of a sudden theres this hissing noise from undr the bonnet. after a few secs it stopped hissing. didnt drive car, i went back to it after 30 mins and trid again. this time the car started but it hissed again. then stopped hissing. re statrted a few times and nothing at all hissing. checked absolutly everyhting. all vacuum hoses intact, all air con pipes working fine, no green dyed oil anywhere. not a thing could i find. i coupled the vagcom no faults. started and restarted car 10 times, all fine. i took for a spin , ran perfect, no faults when i rechecked vagcom. all water levels fine and hoses ok. all dry and fine. brakes and servo unit all fine, in fact the servo was new last week. they dont have a b;low off valve do they ? im totaly lost on this one. any ideas welcome.
