  1. Ignore dealers or distributors. THE ONLY OILS SUITABLE FOR A VAG PD ENGINE are VW505.01 or VW507 (longlife) SPEC. (beware 505.00 is not suitable) There are many oils that are approved to one of those specs. The ELF oil is not. It does not have the EP additive thats needed to protect the injector camshaft. Continue to use non spec oil and you will end up with a chewed up camshaft and ruined injectors - could be in 5000 miles - could be 50,000 miles FACT. One of the cheapest that meet the spec is Quantum Platinum Oil which is sold at most VW/SEAT/SKODA/AUDI dealers for around
  2. Check for air bubbles in the clear fuel line leading to the distributor pump.
  3. Only if you run on full speed I would have thought. Is this a model with Climate control or manual controls ?
  4. There are two layouts for the mk1, 95-97 models and 98-00 models. Completely different.
  5. That Elf oil is Renault spec and does not meet the requirements of your engine. Spec VW505.01 or VW507 is required to protect against premature wear of the unit injector camshaft. Driving without an under tray is hazardous on the diesel models as the power steering belt is very close to the offside wheel. Driving through a puddle often leads to temporary loss of steering, the steering becomes very very heavy, most people would assume its locked. Its a very frightening and dangerous experience I can assure you.
  6. Put the key in the tailgate lock and turn it to the anticlockwise (might be clockwise, I can't remember) position. Then continue to turn the key, (its quite stiff) and you can open the lock mechanically, rather than electrically. Once open, check the wiring in the rubber gaitors (rh side I think), you will probably find damaged wiring there.
  7. According to http://www.auto-parts.spb.ru/cat/au/au.mycat?SelPg&t=aE8gbaJPIG34TyBtKhVIVFkOeUs7FlE0b_AgbUcQoF1oTyISiG0kYWh5ZnVobyDnYRofIUIxhgdOw2GHZX2HhChJoG/biSdwYuqXJdbzn2ubG95a1mx1v0qUZuV1xKRm_mnQuO317W3pDWL18TGUoTIOECz8wx2rA52KIER8y15hJwTaYDzt/guu2AGMzINUS7eb/0GNpO7ihx0V its 7M0 959 653 (thats a 1998 Alhambra model, havent checked others)
  8. largest physical fit into Mk1 diesel tray 100Ah CCA900A 4 yr warranty http://www.battery2u.co.uk/Exide--017TE.aspx
  9. Just come back from a holiday in Portugal (nice), driving to the dentist and the ABS light comes on! :( VCDS scan shows front right sensor problem, (and engine coolant temperature sensor :( ) Fortunately got till next October to fix it (MOT) - hope its not the reluctor ring....
  10. Check the wires in the tailgate rubber gaiters for damage and shorts.
  11. 49/44? Wow. On my Mk1 fitted with 215/60R15 H XL (98) Conti Premium2, I run at the recommended 32 / 30psi empty. how the pressures can be so different for what appears a slighlty different size (and a MK2) !!
  12. IIRC, in the MK1 at least, the fuses for those are located in the well under the drivers seat. Push the seat forward, remove the carpet/cover and I think its under the side lip on the inside.
  13. I dunno. Maybe you'll have better luck by posting in the MK3 forum. SORTED and moved.
  14. No harm whatsoever. The ECU will fall back on internally mapped ultra conservative airflow rates and thats why the power is limited when running without a MAF sensor.
  15. Well that was succint! Does it turn over and at proper speed?
  16. Cheeky young whippersnapper! :P She is doing just fine thank you, if you must know........
  17. Some have had problems with the elecronic module that sits on the wiper motor. Water gets in and due to the conformal coat on the PCB not being done well, it corrodes the PCB tracks. Usual symptoms are wipers wont switch off, or go crazy. If you have a knowledge of electronics, soldering etc the module can often be fixed by removing, cleaning and repairing the damage. New modules are very difficult to source and eye wateringly expensive. Second units may be available from ebay/scrappers. I think there are some photos on the forum somewhere.....
  18. I stand corrected Sparky!
  19. All VAG cars (i.e. inc Mk1, Mk2 Galaxies) have a Macpherson strut design that is sensitive to road camber. They drift to the left when driving on UK roads in the LH lane. It drifts to the right if you ever drive on the continent or on the right hand side of a road (but not a motorway - that has same constant camber across the carriageway) , or , as I've found, drives straight, suggesting the design/build is setup for LHD. The older the car, the worse the "drift" seems to get, probably due to a bit of wear in the steering rack. Is the steering wheel straight, when driving straight?, I've seen tracking done with non centred steering and so the PAS/steering rack will always pull towards what it thinks is the centre position. Note:16 inch alloys on a Mk1 are not OEM. What with wrong non-aproved tyre sizes that might be an issue for your insurance company unless you've declared it.
  20. Phone your local dealer part dept and see if they can give you the correct part no.
  21. Not sure if this the right way http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/absbleeding.html Alternatively, get ABS action with ultra hard braking - follow by a conventional bleed.
  22. Yes check the PATS chip (immobiliser) has not dropped out of the key. PATS chip PATS in key
  23. Quickest way to fault find this is to do a diagnostic scan. Invest in a cheap VCDS cable from ebay
