  1. For the front airbags, I think it needs to be > 5 mph and the deceleration (from the sensor) has to exceed a certain threshold for a minimum time - probably something like >5g for > 50mS (its more complex than that though) inline with the cabin (side impacts dont trigger front bags). So if the Polo just bounced out the way you might not have exceeded the deceleration criterea. Or they may be faulty, BTW in the Skoda manual it is a service item to have airbags replaced every seven years!!
  2. Surprise, surprise  Well definitely not Ford,Seat or VW (although there must be one reputable dealer somewhere? - probably in Bulgaria) Flashing display on startup usually means low or no gas - its leaked from... Evaporator (- in dash) (No 1 suspect) Condensor (- front radiator)(check for damage/corrosion) Pipes or joints (corrosion) Compressor (highly unlikely - don't listen to the dealers) Not much else left to go wrong! Likely previous owner knew there was a problem. If you bought from a garage you could complain.....it will be expensive to fix
  3. I find the best way to improve fuel consumption is to leave the car in the garage.
  4. Is it seized? Or is it just "leaking"? Don't count your chickens before ..... good luck anyway.
  5. droplink = antiroll bar link (which reminds me that the antiroll bar mounting bushes are known to wear allowing that to flop about) Surely its a two man job - one to turn the wheel and clonk constantly while the other is underneath observing ang listening...
  6. you've checked the fluid level of course.... clonk suggests to me either 1. worn (or loose) uj where column attaches to rack or 2. worn ball joints on trackrod ends which are a known problem or 3. mounting bushes on the rack or 4. even possibly worn or loose droplink note that very little wear causes a disproportionate noise OR AS AN OUTSIDE CHANCE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.72/1998 Car and Light/Medium Commercial 04.02.1999 Section: 13 Model: Galaxy, RHD only Markets: All Subject: Knocking noise from front whilst cornering Summary Should a customer express concern over knocking noises from the front of the vehicle whilst cornering, it is possible that pressure fluctuations in the power assisted steering (PAS) system are being transmitted through the vehicle body. This can be resolved by installing a revised PAS low pressure pipe assembly which damps out the vibration. This bulletin supersedes TSB 72/1998 dated 25.06.1998, and includes changes to the Model. Please destroy the previous edition of this bulletin. 7. Ford are really staring to pull the p**s.... This reinforces suspicion that Galaxy has a limited future (beyond 2005) and they just want to milk all the Galaxbies. Again poor quality lets down the shalaxy.
  8. Ford Air Con Seek independent advice - compressor seizure highly unlikely without loud show of snapped/smoking belts damaged tensioners etc. Remember....it air con time!! Oh... and don't forget the VAT :(
  9. :( .....Fix it....... bit of sleeving, bit of heatshrink.........
  10. Dots are a cosmetic fading effect on the printed band on the edge which stops you seeing the bonding glue under the glass.
  11. :( sorry  :(
  12. autos use a lot more diesels than manuals - nothing wrong - just crap technology
  13. What happenned to the blue envelopes in those packets of crisps? Haven't seen em for years.
  14. The sponge material is Ford's pathetic attempt to stop blocked drains. Pull it out to get to the drains (and clean the sponge if you want to put it back). Drains are in the far corners. Note the hole in the foreground provides extra drainage to unknown destination
  15. Still some contoversy in some countries that it can damage engines..(don't know why..) also possibly different calorific value (mpg)
  16. FORD TIS...Item C in the diagram - might be gummed up Idle Air Control Valve IAC Valve The idle air control valve (IAC valve) is an electronically controlled solenoid valve which allows a flow of air to bypass the throttle plate. Engine speed can, therefore, be maintained irrespective of load. The PCM determines engine speed from the PIP signal and this is compared with ECT sensor information, throttle position sensor (TP sensor) information and mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor) information to enable the PCM to calculate the amount of valve movement required. The IAC valve is controlled by grounding pulses from the PCM, the length of which determines the position of the valve.
  17. :o :o  translation pleez dave.... :o
  18. Why do the wires break in the tailgate loom? 1) wires too short and under tension at the point it flexes, especially if it bears against a point on which it rubs. 2) the wire type is not really suitable for flexing , e.g. cheap equipment cable has few cores and the cores are laid parallel which is Ok for a fixed installation whereas cable designed for flexing has lots of finer cores which are twisted together. Cheap cable has insulation which can fail under flexing and temperature cycling allowing the wires to oxidise and then they snap easily when flexed. What is Seatkid trying to say? A replacement loom is likely to be exactly the same. So why not repair the cable and extend at the same time?
  19. :( Welcome to the whacky world of the Shalaxy, where a few piss poor quality bits spoil what should be a great motor. And where dealers do their best to break whatevers left. :(
  20. In my case my A/C's been kaput for about a year now, after 18 months of repair attempts at the dealers. I got fed up giving wads of dosh to the Seat dealer comments like "We're fairly certain we've fixed it, sir" eventually "we think its leaking at the evaporator, the compressor, the...." >
  21. :P Chuffing eck!! :D No wonder they call you vodkas, I'd be knocking them back like mad if I had your problems.... :P Good luck fixing it! Ridway, when I eventually change that leaking evaporator of mine this summer do you recommend the nitrogen purge? Would any garage that regasses A/C's do this or do I need to go to a specialist?
  22. This doesn't make any sense. Static braking force (i.e. stationary vehicle) is always greater than dynamic braking force. What was the kgf figure (each rear wheel)? When you drive along the road (say 20 mph) and apply the handbrake hard, what happens? Can you lock the wheels? Only conclusion is that somethings been put together wrong when they reassembled the brakes. If you physically cant pull up at least three notches maybe something is jamming. Or perhaps the pads have been contaminated with oil or fluid though this would effect the brake test result. The handbrake on the Galaxy is quite capable of holding on very steep inclines (though it can release when it cools) Who did the handbrake job? Why not complain to them?
  23. Highly unlikely that the hose are remotely similar.
  24. As I recall, when I sneeked a look at the MOT manual, it specifies brake efficiency levels(%). Unfortunatley the rolling road measure Brake effort (in kgf) - this has to be converted to Brake efficiency by dividing by vehicle weight. (i.e. A mini doesn't develop as much brake effort as a Galaxy but the efficiency should be about the same) - I very much doubt whether the average brake tester appreciates this.
