  8. depends on how far away - eg 5 light years would take 10years to get a reply and the attenuation would be extreme - would have to be an extremly 'bright' radiation source to get a reflection - in the case of a luminous body (emitting its own radiation) the chances of getting the return signal is zero yes the redshift is to light what the doppler effect is to sound

  18. the last blue screen message you got was basically the computer telling you it couldn't get the stuff out of the cupboard and put it in the correct place on the worksurface - it got confused somehow maybe the stuff in the cupboard was too mixed up or the bit where it was keeping tabs got mixed up ;) :D
  19. ahh I was hoping you'd ask that ;) for that we rely on my second method to calculate the stars intrinsic brightness, we can observe its apparent brightness and use the formula below to calculate distance apparent brightness = intrinsic brightness / (distance)
  20. ok try an analogy you are in your kitchen and you have to prepare a meals, you have cupboards where you have foo, pots, pans, spoons, knives etc (this is your long term storage - your disk drives) you also have your work surface (this is your memory). As you start preparing you take things out of the cupboards and put them on the work surface, you cant always finish each job and put things away so as you prepare the meal your work surface gets more and more clutterered. Now the computer can do some clever things - it takes some of your cupboard space and reserves it - you cant use it. If your work surface is full and you need another pan (making a nice roue sauce) you take the pan out and the computer puts some of the clutter into its reserved cupboard ( keeping a mental note of where it goes) freeing up some work surface for you to use. If you need the stuff its 'put away in its reserve' it needs to put something else in there to free up more work surface. The bigger your work surface is the more jobs you can do before having to put some stuff away in the reserve cupboard. Depending on your operating system the computer will need to use some of your 'work surface' to keep track of whats going on. As you close programs down they are removed - like putting the clutter away in their proper cupboards - freeing up work surface. Hope this helps - remember its only an analogy
  21. you were getting blue screens with references to resources (whether you know it or not) - memory helps all those chat windows, ebay windows, live chat windows ford site etc stay open with less pageing (caused you last blue screen). You might only use a few programs but its the number of threads you open - it can multitask but ......... needs memory to do it choke choke splutter, now now take a deeeeeepp breath ;) :D :D :P :D :D :D ;) ;)
