I found that with the addition of an external magnetic type, the time to lock improved from around a minute and a half to about 15 seconds. Good luck

All device manager does is tell you that its connected and the driver is OK. It doesnt tell you whether or not its capable of transferring data ..... or the lens is clean .... :lol: :lol:

Yep that confirms the cable is OK and the controller is fine. You need another drive now then.... :)

Maz ... if you look at this; the left plug would usually plug into IDE1 (IDE0 will be for the hard drive) the middle plug was the CD writer if it was below the DVD Rom drive ...and the far right was connected to the DVD Rom. If you can you need to try connecting the DVD rom to the middle connector.

Maz ...you might like to look at this http://www.helpwithpcs.com/upgrading/insta...cd_recorder.htm This will be the same for a DVD writer. From your PM, the CD Errors shown in Event Viewer either indicated an Input/Output Controller or cable problem. You need to try connecting the DVD drive already connected to the ribbon cable to the other plug that your CD writer was connected to. This will confirm that the plug is OK. If it works, then the CD writer drive is U/S. Gooner has offered a CDRW (what a nice chap) which will be fine to burn music onto CD.
