Help ! Coolant Dumped All Over
Andrew T replied to jkspoff's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Yes it's normal to get airlocks after a coolant change. Turning the heater onto full heat for a few minutes when the engine is hot can help to purge them, on some cars it can also help to have the front of the car raised when you add extra coolant, although on the Galaxy the coolant tank is well above the engine and I suspect it is the highest point in the cooling system. I've been on this site for a couple of years and cooling system problems are very few and far between, and almost unheard of on newer vehicles, was there any evidence that it was damaged during the repair of the Aircon ? -
I thought all Alhambras had Aircon - or are the specs different over there ?
-
I don't think I would either jet wash or steam clean a modern engine. I've never had a problem caused by a dirty engine but I've had loads of problems with electronics. I recall a guy with an elderly Citroen XM on a website I used to frequent. His car was rendered undrivable and subsequently scrapped after steam cleaning the engine...............!

How Many Fords Have You Guys And Gals Owned

Is the Granada Dorchester the Funeral car ? -
Well I can only speak as I find, and my Honda Civic 1.5 VTEC simply says "Honda Civic" and the Galaxy "Ford Galaxy". The Honda was UK new and Galaxy imported from Belgium. Previous Imports I have owned have been as vague as "Audi rigid 2-axle". When I went to buy the tax on another Civic I'd just bought I filled in the application form with "Honda Civic 1.5LSI Coupe" as it said on the boot lid only to have this crossed out by the women in post office, because the V5 only said "Honda Civic". Nearly all my cars have been registered through the Leeds LVLO so maybe there are regional differences in how the V5 is filled out?

This is my first and last ! -
Do a search it's been discussed before, but if IIRC the switching only applies to the optional xenon headlights, what you need is a template in order to correctly position the convertors/blanks. Myself I just stick a bit of tape in a likely looking spot - to keep the Foriegn Filth happy should I get stopped. How would they check the effectiveness of them without optical equipment ?
-
As the idle speed is controlled by the ECU it's worth rebooting it by disconnecting the battery for half an hour. The ECU will then go through a re-learning process. May not help but it costs nothing to try. Make sure you have your radio security code though.

Alhambra Se V Galaxy Ghia
Andrew T replied to Ogben Schmutzel's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
Compared to that the Ghia gives you; 6 pack CD Parking sensor F& R. Lots of seats but nothing sporty about them. No heated front seats (great pity) Roof Vents and dipping mirror on later models. Elec mirrors but no folding. 6 window closing, 4 window opening (go figure........or are mine buggered ?) No side rubbing strips on the Bamma ? -
Have a look at SEATKIDS posts, he's selling an evaporator.

Looks Like It Was The Condenser
Andrew T replied to Ogben Schmutzel's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Same thing happened to me, and I was told the same story about sub-standard components. So, as Ford clearly knew there was a problem, why didn't they do a recall ? Or had they calculated that most of the failures would occur out of warranty and they wouldn't need to pick up bill ? -
Recomend Non-main Dealer Centres?

FWIW I'm going to National Tyres in Preston tommorow to have the rear pads replaced for -
It sounds more like

If it was something contacting the drive shaft, a shiney witness mark should be cleary visible.
-
Any other suggestions?? Wheel bearings would be a muted whirring or rumbling noise, going on or off on corners depending if that bearing was under load or not. The only thing I've had that was similar (and it took a while to find it) was a newly fitted exhaust which was misaligned and contacting the drive shaft, but only when braking hard into sharp, downhill left hand bends. It made a noise like someone abusing a piglet.
-
When I've had a slipping belt it's only happened uner high load conditions, i.e. full lock - I think it would be unusual to get the squeeling when driving (i.e. part lock) but not to experience it on full lock as well. You can sometimes get a slack belt to squeel after driving through a large puddle - but that seems a bit unlikely with the present weather. Could the tyre have contacted a mis-aligned mud flap ? you should see evidence of scuffing if it has.

[ I think it can encourage some to suck up the sh1t from dregs of the tank (or is that an old wives tail ?!) I've always thought so, and I've been running tanks down to the bottom for 25years without any ill effects.

The 2.0 petrol unit in the sharan is completely different to the Ford unit, being the old 2.0 8v unit shared with the Golf, Passat Octavia et al. It's a unit with a strong reputation for delivering high milages but has a cam belt rather than the chain that the Ford uses, so make sure it's been changed on a 98 model (I think it's due at 60k/5 years).

Recomend Non-main Dealer Centres?
Andrew T replied to martinc's topic in Dealer Service and Reliability (Galaxy)
Seek a recommendation off friends for a local fast fit place that does a good job (they vary hugely from branch to branch in terms of quality of work done, so I'd hesistate to recommend a national chain) and then price check them against other local outlets. I think you should be looking around half that figure. -

Ahhhhh, I've got my browser set to remove all surplus bits so I can view it discretely when I should be working. -

So what have you bought Greg ? -
I agree with you regarding the comfort of the seats, a classic case of you can't have your cake and eat it. However given that the Kids are on boosters till they are ten or eleven, the comfort of the seat itself is academic. As I end up removing the rearmost seats almost weekly I can vouch for the fact they are a pain to remove and store (ours go into the boot of our other car). The ideal for me woud be a fold up rear bench in the boot and removable chairs in middle. I notice the Voyager has been re-designed with fully folding chairs, I wonder if it will now lose it's postion of choice as the favourite MPV of the executive Taxi fleets ?

Is a Galaxy reliable ? - depends on your definition. In terms of leaving you stranded at the roadside it's probably about average, but you are likely to encounter problems with water ingress, the wipers, spare wheel holder, MAFs and auxilliary heaters on the Diesel. All of those can be fixed relatively cheaply with the advice youi'll find on here so your big worry should be the expensive to fix Air conditioning. If you're after problem free motoring, you're far more likely to find it in the Toyota. BTW, If you're after a petrol the 2.3 has the same fuel consumption as the 2.0 but is about 25% more powerful.
-
I was following a Sharan the other week and noticed it was badged as a 2.0 TDI, checked the brochure and although the 115 is still a 1.9, the more powerful engine option is now the new 2.0 140BHP PDI unit. Seems very odd to launch a new engine as it goes out of production, or is the old Sharan to carry on? They also appear to have dropped the V6 models.
-
Oh I don't know.......whilst the 2.0 is slow and thirsty, the few of us who run 2.3s seem quite happy with them, a smooth 145BHP, no cam belt replacement, no MAF or auxlliary heater problems.......There is also a 1.8 20 Valve Turbo available in the the Sharan and Alhambra with 150BHP which sounds a useful bit of kit.
