  1. There is an article in this weeks Auto Express which concluded that using the the Airconditioning on a Zafira increased the fuel consumption by 5.1% They also tested the effect of using a rear mounted cycle carrier and found it increased consumption by 13%.
  2. There have been problems on Autos with the shift inhibitor switch in the gear console playing up, but I can't see how attatching jump leads would solve this - has it ever started successfully after this occurence without jumping ? Does the LED in the door flash when it happens ? this would indicate immobilisation (i.e. starter motor disconnected).
  3. They must use some *dodgey* parts.....
  4. Or Save getting your hands dirty by going to National Tyres who do an oil and filter change on Petrol engines up to 2300cc for
  5. If you mean the ones on the rear calipers, my MK2 has one on each side located between the actuator arm and the caliper body.
  6. Regarding the Fuel consumed the AC, I remember some tests in Autocar many years and they concluded (forgive me for not being sad enough to remeber the exact figures) that running the AC used a bit more fuel than having the windows and sunroof open. Having watched my fuel consumption meter like a Hawk for the last couple of years, the only time I've noticed the AC causing high fuel consumption is during intial cooling down on very hot days, once the car is cooled the difference is fairly small. Incidentally, a top tip for cooling the car quickly is to switch the recirculation to on, so the AC is cooling already cooled air, set the direction to control to floor and open the windows a couple of inches. The cold air then builds up from the bottom of the car pushing the hot air out through the windows, give 5 minutes then close the windows and switch off the recirc'.
  7. A fair point, but I didn't see any more recent models with their windows open (i.e those still in warrenty). This may also imply that those who smoke can't afford to buy a newer Galaxy. I shall continue with my unscientific research, I'm working on Voyagers now.
  8. You could probably buy a new MAF for the cost of a rolling road session.
  9. During the last few days of heat wave I've been Defective Aircon spotting. Given that all Mk2 Sharalaxys have AC, I reckon 1 in 3 were being driven with their windows open - inevitably they were all early MK2s -it shows how common this problem is and suggests a lot of people can't afford or justify the expense of repairing it.
  10. In the absence of anyone more qualified answering, I'd suggest you gamble
  11. Replacement Ford Petrol engines have been covered a couple of times and the concensus was that there are enough differences between those fitted in the RWD Sierra and Scorpio to make them impossible to fit in the Galaxy. I can't say if those differences extend to the cylinder head.
  12. Log book won't normally specify the trim. You should find Alloy wheels instead of wheel trims and parking radar compared to the lower spec LX. Only the Ghia has a badge denoting the trim.
  13. Mazda MPV is almost identical in size, but as rare as Rocking Horse wotsit. Bound to be reliable, but maybe not as nice to drive as a Gal. Or what about the 2001+ Previa ? that's bigger than the Gal.
  14. I saw ours when it was mid way through condensor replacement and it looked like it was in repair after a major accident. It took 10 hours to replace the compressor and condensor.
  15. A long shot, but the auxiliary drivebelt tensioner is sometimes a problem on higher milage 2.3s, however I wouldn't expect it to cause a tapping noise. Another possibility would be the timing chain tensioner, although I don't recall anyone on here having one fail.
  16. I've had a 75% refund from Vauxhall on failed camrollers out of Warranty, and a friend has been offered 90% of a
  17. A good rule of thumb is not to be believe any diagnosis a Ford dealer gives, the Galaxy is a mystery to most of them. Even if the head gasket has gone why can it not be replaced ? At 88K the bottom end of the engine should be good for another 100K and pulling the head off will give the oppotunity sort out any troubles that may be developing upstairs. An independent VW specialist would be a better bet as the VR6 engine is fitted across the VW range. It would also be worth looking on VW specific websites (eg for the Golf) for more info on VR6 specific problems.
  18. We could do a sweepstake on when the next "why are clouds of smoke appearing from under the rear passenger door?" question will appear. My guess October 17th.
  19. Timing chains rattling as a prelude to snapping have been mentioned for the VR6 engine. Chain replacment is a big, expensive (
  20. This has just been dicussed on an unrelated thread, but I think it's worth posting it in its own right for those who missed it and don't know such a thing is available. A previous post on the subject. Note that Securon (linked from the above thread) will not supply direct to the public.
  21. If you still want to go ahead, one of these( Cotton Airfilters.) would be preferable to the oiled gauze which K&N use.
  22. Someone has done it.
  23. There have been posts in the past regarding retro fitting a 3 point belt to the centre seat. It's not possible to fit a factory type installation, but belt manufacturer Securon was supposed to be working on a conversion kit which involved bolting a reel to the floor behihind the middle seat. I don't recall anyone on this site having used it though.
  24. Yes, when the Mark 2 was introduced (August 2000) it had the solid headrests, lapbelts and mk1 size brakes. There was then an upgrade (Feb 2001 says Ivor) which introduced the 3 point belt, holy headrests and larger diameter discs front and rear, version 2.2 if you like. There may be some other minor differences as well, I think the brake diiferences apply to the Bamma and Shazza as well. There was a post about this in the early days of the forum, and if IIRC it was due to a cockup by the manufacturer in not applying for type approval for the new parts (or something like that).
  25. It's worth remembering when ordering parts that those who have a version 2.1 (Solid headrests & Lapstrap) also have the smaller diameter brakes of the MK1. On the subject of specification trivia, does anyone have a seatbelt warning light ? During a very bored moment (Mrs T doing a "quick" bit of shopping) I took to reading the owners manual which says I should have one, mind you it also says I should have a cruise control warning light which has been the subject of previous discussion and it seems to be a lucky dip as to who has or hasn't got one.
