The additional battery under driver/passenger seat is an optional extra used to power the "auxilliary heater with programmable timer" - i.e the option where auxilliary heater starts independently of the engine to warm the car before you start it on those frosty mornings in Finland. It is connected to the alternator via an additional charge relay - AFAIK it cannot power anything else, it is purely a small battery to make sure that the main battery is not discharged by the heater operating in this mode. Modern good quality batteries can last a long time - typically 5 or more years provided it was stored correctly to start with and is kept fully charged at all times. The early failures on original batteries is usually down to the fact that vehicles are kept in storage a long time and worse still in a showroom, with the doors opening and the courtesy lights left on etc. Things that kill batteries:- Excessively high temperatures Vibration and shock Deep discharge Prolonged period of partial or more discharge - you can get this with frequent stop/start type patterns. If you have a "trickle" or "standby charge" capable charger, using this 4 or more times a year for 24 hours or more can prolong the life of your battery by "topping up" the battery fully.

Donkeys years are shorter than human years, 1 Donkey year = ~2.2 human years To check current drain, switch off everything, disconnect one battery lead and insert a meter in series with the lead and measure the current drawn. It should be less than 100mA (0.1A). Typically 50mA (0.05A). Anything signifcantly more indicates a fault. Make sure you know the radio code before you disconnect the battery. Its not unknown to be sold a duff battery, a lot of places do not store them correctly.

Mk 1 Tdi Auto - Juddering And Black Smoke ?

First check the air filter is not blocked. Then get the injectors checked/cleaned at somewhere like a Lucas diesel service centre. -
Had A Flat Battery (ca Type)
seatkid replied to Dave-G's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
The green indicator is a "state of charge" indicator Green = Battery charged OK White = Battery needs charging Black/Red = Fluid needs topping up The indicator is basically a specific gravity indicator working on one cell. If the indicator was green and you had trouble with starting its likely one of the other cells is faulty. Although modern Ca based batteries are truly no maintenance, you can usually remove the the cell cover and check the fluid levels. If water is down in a cell it usually means a duff battery. If water is down overall there may be a problem with the charging system (over charging) From what you say though its likely your battery is knackered. Check the guarantee first...... -
for crying out loud!..... Either get a brand new coilpak fitted or get a new car......

Lubricate Wiper Mechanism In-situ?

I think a doctor would advise you against sticking small objects into your private parts! -
Thankyou for your advice Forshaw, however Shalaxy MAFs do not use hot wire technology MAF sensors. (AFAIK ) they are all based on modern hybrid i.c. hot film technology. In most cases they don't respond to cleaning, due to the film having eroded and the calibration terminally shifted out of range.

Well 800 Miles In 5 Days And....
seatkid replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
5ml max per litre according to legislation or 0.5%. I witnessed a random test at a Tesco garage once and it was as bang on the 10 litre mark as I could tell - IIRC the statutory measuring can was marked down to 1ml increments. Fuel is dispensed by volume so in theory you should get a greater amount "mass" during a very cold winter - although underground tank temperatures wont vary much. A lot of it is unscientific anecdote and fanboyism. Its puzzling why the brand names can't be more specific. Either they know a lot of it is hype, or they don't want to upset the Supermarkets or.....who knows? That I doubt very much. All petrol at all stations comes from your local refinery (with the possible exception of Shell Optimax/V-Power which uses a unique process AFAIK). The mysterious "additives" are the only difference. Unless you have a high performance high compression engine with an ECU that recognises fuel grade and adjusts ignition timing (e.g. mainly only "sports" cars ) you are wasting money on "high octane" fuel - your mpg might actually be worse... -
You've got fuel in the cylinder, so I reckon the problem is ignition (as in 90% of petrol no-start cases) Did you get a brand new coil pak? Were the new leads an OEM brand e.g. Beru or Bosch? What is the make/model of the new plugs? (i.e. are they the correct heat range) I had exactly same symptoms with my Golf - in the end down to faulty lead(s) (insulation breakdown) . Don't be fooled a weak (white) spark. You need a big fat blue spark willing to jump 3 - 4 inches. Once you flood a petrol engine you have to either Wait a loooong time. (minimum half hour, maybe hour) or Take out the plugs and turn it over and refit. or Try a tow start. Having flooded the engine, once its started don't run it aggresively, just let it idle lightly, as the CAT may be saturated. If the CAT starts to get stinking hot or you smell bad things from the exhaust, switch off immediately and leave it an hour for the CAT to evaporate the petrol and cool down.

Well 800 Miles In 5 Days And....
seatkid replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I'm not one for endorsing fuel brands, in fact, in the past I have ridiculed claims of better mpg etc with great gusto. However, a few weeks ago after struggling to get an average of ~43 mpg in my Fabia 1.2, I decided to switch from using the normal Sainsbury/Tesco stuff to Shell petrol (but not v-power or optimax mind!) for a try. I know that psychology can be a powerful influence and so I have to dismiss some of what I think I observe, but .....I do think I might getting as much as a 5 - 10% improvement in mpg. :D Theres no significant difference in performance or "drivability" or "smoothness" that I can detect, so I am still sceptical whether this is just an illusion brought about by a change in driving style and an unconscious wish to succeed. When I switched back to Sainsbury for a half a tank, I seemed to get lower mpg almost straight away. As Shell petrol is the same price as Sainsbury/Tesco (but without "points" worth about 25p), I will continue to mull this "phenomenon" over, to decide if it is "real" or not. -
A few possibilities White/Grey smoke is usually unburnt fuel. Could be: Your compression has gone (Piston or valve failure). The fuel is not being injected correctly - knackered injector - but this would not be an suuden failure Could be pump timing, but on a PD this is electronically controlled. Can you reflash your ECU back to its original state? Could be turbo has failed and oil is entering the inlet manifold......most likely candidate.....especially if the remap increased the boost pressure.
