Remote Locking And Unlocking
NikpV replied to davewill's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thank you Nikpv remember its only the remote locking that would be affeced - the pats chip does not need external power.. I only put the smilies in because its just the sort of job that alays seems to go wrong, there you are everything ready, you pop the batteries and as the new one(s) go in you drop one, by the time you have found it again (20secs gone) you cant quite remember which way round it should be so you double check (now at 35sec), the kids come charging past and the 4 year old wants to fiddle so you tell them to get off fending little fingers away, youngest starts crying telling you that you are mean, along comes SWMBO wanting to know what you've done to upset the kids. You get the thing back together (50sec) - go and check it .... nope need to reprogram so you search for your manual as usual you cant find it so fier up the computer and have a look at the forum and you find that maz has borked the whole thing and it doesn't work...... such a simple little job ... (oh and by the way in all the rumpus you have dropped the pats chip which the eldest has superglued to her latest collage .....) -
Where Do I Start Looking?!
NikpV replied to deano41's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
wonder if you have a loose earth somewhere forcing current to flow in unexpected directions ... maybe -
  :2: :16:

Remote Locking And Unlocking

sorry it was completely serious - I think you have to change them wthin 30-45 secs but of course I may be thinking about some other remote control but I doubt it  -

It depends on how quickly you do it   -
nothinbad there - they've sold you a lemon maz

what a surprise actually all of glens sites seem to have gone at the time - certainly - the Pic forum, and the Harry potter one both went

Remote Locking And Unlocking
NikpV replied to davewill's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I would investigate the wires in the rubber boots between the doors and body - see items 31 and 43 in the faq shorts or breaks in these can cause allsorts of problems - start with the drivers door -

heres the diagram - I think I will add it to the faq -
Remote Locking And Unlocking
NikpV replied to davewill's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I think this is a hold over from the days when it was IrD, when we discussed this before I think the consensus was that the manual for this hadnt been rewitten or that being non-directional it didn't matter. Looking at the components for the central locking on the mk2 (Sharan) there is no separate antenna - it could be that the wiring is the antenna somewhere on the forum there is a diagram showing the central locking components for a LHD sharan. -
in fact early mk2 didnt have this light active - there were several threads about this in the earlier days - 2002 ish, our 2001 model did not have it but after having the instrument pod changed we got it - cant really see its point as BK says it shows when the CC is turned on - not necessarily active - we always have ours on but obviously use it when needed so the light always shows. If it is turning off/on without the cc switch being active there is a fault somewhere

Yeh , and there was me thinking someone had just touched the Halogens up with a bit of Blue paint :16: actually thats not far from the truth - read the descriptions - the yellow light is filtered out giving the bulbs a bluish look - this is more important to the light colour than the xenon - the xenon's higher heat conductivity allows the filament to run at a higher temp

How To Double The Fuel Economy Of Your Galaxy
NikpV replied to johnswlondon's topic in Debating forum
all right folks this is getting somewhat off topic - I dont think either the 'slow old fart' or the pizza side of things needs any further airing - I am happy to close this thread unless it goes back to being technical - personally in this section its run its course and is not of a technical nature anymore Thanks in advance -
original Hids contain xenon gas and work using a different way than filament lamps, originally filament lamps contained argon to prevent oxidation of the filament and to conduct the heat to the glass (otherwise the filament melts) this can be replaced by halogens and more recent by xenon although the latter is a bit of a marketing ploy see above - having said that xenon is dense and is a marginally better heat conductor - adverts that mention xenon usually refer to filament lamps unless they state that they are of the discharge (non filament type) Its not rocket science :16: There are 3 type of light here BK 1. HID's - discharge lamps containing Xenon 2. Filament lamps with some added xenon it (all over ebay - if you read the descriptions - they give the HID look 3. Filament lamps with halogen (+argon) which redues the vaporisation of filament at higher tems
-
yes a marketing scam which relied on folks associating the term xenons with HID whilst using a completely different system of light generation

I drive an auto galaxy (not a personal choice - price was a giveaway due to a relation who was i the trade at the time) and I can confirm that fuel conumuption is worse - we get an avere of about 43mpg from ours although SK could probably boost that to 48mpg with careful driving :D It was replaced under warranty with a new *(not refurbished box) after 35K annd although I quite like it it seems to develop a lazy driving style :D its easy on the left foot when stuck in a traffic queue I would not buy another unless the same deal came up again

Btw it is possible to have non HID xenons ie filament lamps with xenon in the lamp. edit :more essential spelling maintenance

pedantic mode on/ actually Xenon is a noble/inert gas (helium, neon, argon, krypton, Xenon Radon) and is used in discharge tubes like neon and sodium vapour lamps - its characteristic discharge colour is a brilliant white, in other words the excited electrons (stimulated by the heating effect of the electric current lose their energy as high energy photon - nearer the blue end of the spectrum. This process is the same as fluorescent tubes where mercy vapour produces ultra violet photons which are absorbed by the fluorescent coating and re-emitted as white light (lose the coating on the inside of the tube and UV emitted will give you a tan, but much less light) Halogen lamps replace the inert gas in a filament lamp with some halogen (Fluorine, chlorine, bromine,Iodine or astatine - halo gen - greek salt forming) this allows their filaments to get hotter and produce more photons in the violet/blue end of the spectrum making the like whiter. See Stefan's law for more technical explanation pedant mode off reason for edit - essential spelling maintenance :D :D

there is a button on the bottom of the right hand stalk this cycles between memories/displays 1 & 2 - holding it in resets the 2 displays IIRC, the rocker switch on the end cycles though instantaneous mpg average mpg distance travelled time of journey average speed Sequence may not be competely correct, The number 2 display resets itself after about 2 hours but the number 1 display only resets when the button on the stalk is held in All a bit vague but I think its rooughly correct :( :) BTW I thought RTFM was read the fine manual :)

the PATS transponder and the circuitry to generate the RF are completely separate and do separate jobs - opening and starting the engine use different parts of the electrical system - PATS for starting/running - GEM for central locking so it should not matter - just popped the pats chip out of my remote and it still opens the doors but wont let the car run
