  1. Hi John I see it went from Barnsley, but was the keys nicked from the house, and if so is the house in Wimslow ? I live about half way between the two so will keep a eye open, have you got the phone number of the police who it has been reported to ? Radiotwo
  2. I assume you mean by sensor you mean door light switch ! if so it will be a dealer part Radiotwo
  3. I think you have answered your own question ! Adjust the belt ! Radiotwo
  4. Here you go Greg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOkbcAdw0Es...feature=related And no mention of undoing bleed nipple. I have done a bit of research and that is a typical way of doing it, but no one mentions undoing for just pad change Radiotwo
  5. Hi bigjeeze I am not being sarcastic but do you always believe every thing you read ? As John says remove the cap, but it "should" not overflow because the fluid drop is only where the pad wear has taken it up. And I am not a great lover of using clamps, never any proof, but sure it does not do the rubber any good, especially if they are a little old and getting brittle. Admitting if you pushed the pistons back very quickly then poss some harm could come of it, but you are not doing that just slowly with the wind back tool or alike. But the amount of stories I have heard " I replace my disc pads and now the pedal is soft" and when asked how did you change them am told "I released the bleed nipple" it says it all. Radiotwo
  6. Come on Gregers keep up ! "Can anyone help. My 1997 Galaxy has failed its MOT on rear fog lights not working. I have tried the bulbs, no luck, the fuses seem ok so I am thinking the relay. Any ideas? Thanks folks" Radiotwo
  7. Thanks for confirming that for me. I'll try rope father in law into helping me bleed the brakes, the missus is next to useless at 37 weeks preg lol she can barely walk. I hope I catch you in time ! PLEASE DON'T UNDO THE BLEED NIPPLE I will cause you more hassle It is a old wifes tale that it causes problem in the ABS pump, if you think about it under normal operation of the way the brakes work, you press the pedal and the fluid goes one way(to the brake cylinder) then when you release it goes back, so in fact goes both ways. I have never undone any nipples when doing brake work, unless I am changing the fluid. Radiotwo
  8. Hi Rob In my opinion I would not use Chains too much trouble in this country we don't get enough compact snow. You would be putting them on to get out of the side road, then have to stop to take them off to drive on the clear tarmac, and poss stop again to put them on just to go down a side road. You cannot use them on tarmac and above about 40mph. I have never used chains in 30 odd years of driving and don't intend to Radiotwo
  9. Typical plate from a Defender. GVW 2400kg GTW 5900kg Therefore it can tow a 3.5 ton trailer......should be big enough for you. I would imagine other 4x4's to be similar. I think it a train weight of around 8.5 ton before you worry about tacho's etc ( not 100% on this though ). Obviously all this is subject to usual width and length restrictions and having a b+e license or above. This is to both you and Richard If we are talking big numbers ! As you have gathered from my signature I tow with a Toyota Amazon, and these are the figures: 3260 Kgs GVW 6760 Kgs GTW so will drag 3500Kgs But with regards a Tachograph, you only need one if you are towing for hire or reward (Business), but if this is the case then the max weight before the tacho is 3500Kgs. Radiotwo
  10. Nice link, very much appreciated, thanks Radiotwo, I think we are certainly getting closer....but I was trying to find a bosch part number for the alternator which was originally fitted to this vehicle, all the same I am really thankful the help you guys are giving me, its just that I cant find the correct part number for the Bosch alternator which would have been originally fitted. Is there anyone out there with a copy of TIS or similar which states this info?..... It would seem that there are a number of differing posts relating to starting/alternator/battery problems to say that we could be on to something here...is it possible (because of the price differences between alternators (and they are quite vast) could point to the wrong type of alternator/batteries fitted to a lot of older Mk1 Shalaxies as/when they have had similar failures?...as soon as the winter approaches I start to experience low battery/starting issues, it definitely coincides to when I start to use the on board electrical extras such as the front heated screen....I know what some may reply "Stop using the heated front screen" but please don't be silly as that's not really the answer is it!! I have searched long and hard but I cant find anything which states the correct part number of the Bosch alternator for this type of vehicle. Thanks again, please I welcome any relevant comments. Hi again I am not 100% sure what you are wanting to do ! I get the impression you have a alternator and you just need to know if it the right one ? Other than this clutch thing as long as it is the correct hand and all the bolts line up (and the same size pulley) which could make a difference then don't worry as been said you need a 120 Amp output and as long as the battery is good then there is no problem what alternator you fit. the only thing to test when on the car, is that it is putting out 14.5 volts and no more. Just going back to the Bosch number, do a search on google, and you might be able to compare numbers. Radiotwo
  11. Thanks for the reply zorgman, I dont understand what you mean by "checking the free clutch" can you tell me what this is please? I believe this model should be fitted with a 120a alternator but there are a few different types with very different price tags, does any one know what type of 120a alternator it should have and if possible a part number? Thanks again. Hi Alan I think "zorgman is referring to some of the alternators have a sort of clutch on them! I cannot see the need for one. But I think most of the replacement alternators are Lucas ones, but have a look at this link, and to be sure put your reg in http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Ford_Gal...a4c374&ALTR Radiotwo
  12. Hi dave As you say the one you have got is not legal BUT ! What you need to do is fill your fuel tank to the top, and populate the car with all the people who you would normally have in the car when towing the caravan, and any luggage you would put in the boot, and take to the weighbridge and get the print off, and if it is convenient, do the same with the caravan, and weigh that with all the kit in it. And don't forget a Galaxy is possible worse than a normal saloon as you can put more in, as in more people, seven average adults @90Kgs = 630Kgs Now as we know the 2510Kgs is the max so lets say the weigh bridge comes back with 2470Kgs so deduct this from the 4000Kgs and this leaves 1530Kgs so in your case. yours is under,(is your Indiana 1500Kgs GROSS ?) And I do have to chuckle when the Dealers say "oh yes that caravan is fine" are they bothered if you get pulled up and will they pay the fine ? Don't think so they are just after a sale. Sorry for keep going on at this, but some of you don't seem to grasp this, and how strict they are on the roads now, if you never get caught, Great ! but is it worth the risk. ? Radiotwo
  13. Hi Dave Under the bonnet Near the bonnet hinge on the offside ! Radiotwo
  14. I think the point is .. say Richard is a single chap (no other adults or teenage kids) and he has no luggage in his Galaxy because he's loaded up his van so it weighs 1999kg and his Galaxy kerb weight is at its minimum (the weight of the car, him as driver and a full tank of fuel) at 1724kg then how is he breaking the law? Don't say he might add more weight because of course he might - in the same way he might stop and shoot someone and go beyond what's legal. But until he does that, what's the problem? At the end of the day it does not affect me, as I keep to the law, but my comments are to hopefully stop someone getting caught out. Yes "Richard" may be a single chap etc, but you don't see many single persons driving around in a MPV and towing a large caravan so be realistic 2470/2510Kgs is a realistic weight. and as said Car/Caravan(Trailer) cannot be more that 4000kgs So the rest is just maths I would hate one of you guys coming on here saying what a S**t day on my way on my holls, and found to be over weight, heavy fine and the car and Caravan taken off them just because likes of me did not explain the law. Radiotwo
  15. Sorry to come back on this, Richard you are not grasping the point ! Its the law you have to observe, not what the car will tow. Yes the car is capable of towing 2000Kgs and as stated the engine, brakes etc will cope with that weight, but the figures that are on the data plate are the ones you have to use. Using your scenario about when at the weigh bridge take every thing out of the car, but it does not work like that. You decide to go way for the week , you put two adults and two teenagers, and some luggage in the boot, hitch up the caravan, and you have your awning gas bottles etc, you drive down the road and get pulled by the Police, (Vosa) the then get the portable weigh pads out. stick the front axle on and ok you are under 1240Kgs then they do the rear axle and you are under 1280kgs, but you will find with four passengers, a full tank of fuel and the luggage you will be close to 2510Kgs, ( and the driver and passengers cannot get out) so we know the GTW is 4000kgs so (this is the magical amount) so 4000-2510= so you have only 1490Kgs left so no you cannot tow 2000KGS In fact hear is a good one, Unless I have got the numbers wrong, the 130 BHP can tow less that the 115BHP ! admitting by only 40Kgs Radiotwo
  16. Tim Why are you repeating what has already been said ? Both Big-Kev and I have said this already and only wrote it after you stated about 2000Kgs and the B+E entitlement in not correct, if you passed your test before Jan 1997 Silly me, I have just realized why you have repeated it (SPAM) Radiotwo
  17. As I have already said not legally Please look at the data plate, It will have four weights. The highest which is poss 4000 this is in Kgs and is the Gross train weight (the weight of the car and the trailer combined) the next is the weight of the car itself, and this is something like 2510, this is deducted from the 4000 which leaves 1490Kgs which is the total weight the car can tow. The other two numbers are the axle weights, one for the front and one for the rear. Most plates I have seen start with the axle weights first, then the car, then the GTW So when you get pulled by VOSA and or the Police these are the figures that are used, so any weights that are exceeded will be acted on, so you could end up with one or more offenses. Yes the cars will tow the weights, is it worth the chance ? Radiotwo Ps sorry to repeat this even though Kev has already explained this.
  18. Hi Swifty Have a look on your data plate, it will show a max gross train weight, if you are over that and get pulled you will get fined and poss the outfit could get taken off you. Radiotwo
  19. Not legally Radiotwo
  20. Hi Paul You would be looking at about 1400Kgs The way to calculate what you can tow is 85% of the kerbside weight of the car, or look on the data plate and it should tell you on there, it will tell you the axle weights and kerb weight and gross train weights, so if the gross train weight is 3200kgs subtract the kerb weight and that will give you the towable weight. But also you have not said when you have passed you driving test ? if it was after Jan 97 you will have to poss pass another test to tow a trailer Radiotwo
  21. Hi davec I think there is a bit more to this ! You need to tell us, have you just had the towbar fitted ? you say it is driving the grandkids mad, but is it buzzing all the time, or only when a trailer is on? Radiotwo
  22. 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10 No I don't think so ! Radiotwo
  23. Where has the EDIT function gone ? Radiotwo Thats funny its back ! I put a reply on and no edit, as I had missed a word out and could not edit it, but when I asked (here) it was there. Am I getting too old ? Radiotwo
  24. Hi Steve what is the exact length of the caravan ? Radiotwo
