Climate Control Advice

I hate to be a doom and gloom merchant, but white smoke and a lack of oomph does suggest turbo problems. A delay in throttle response suggests that the turbo isn't doing it's job, and then you leave it for 20 minutes and it gets better again. Hmmm (as Mof4 would say). What about the actuator valve - boost relief unit? On many recent VAG engines this is a diaphragm valve which recirculates excess boost (rather than dumping it to atmosphere) and it can get sticky or fail. I think VAG call it a 'recirculation valve'?

Well, I am a Dingo after all... ;)

Load index is 94 for those. Full text (from the Manual) is: 225/45 R17 94 rf. 41/38 psi and 44/50 psi (same pressures as the 215/55 R16 95 rf.) Cheers.

Now you just have to get your brakes fixed!!! :)
-
Yes. You'll note that I got it wrong when I said 225/45. However, 225/45 R17 have been fitted to Mk2 Galaxys, according to the manual. However, the chart makes this a different diameter (634mm instead of 642mm). Hmmm. I think I'll do a little more research...

NO! Seat Kid said it right - you could be pressing the brake a bit harder when you press the clutch. -
Here is a useful link for tyre data: http://www.dad.co.za/conversion.html

I'm thinking about it. When my tyres wear out, I might buy 17" aftermarket alloys. As you can fit slightly wider tyres to the Galaxy, if you go for the 225's the grip will be better. (However, I don't want *too much* grip with such a tall vehicle) I suspect the biggest downside to the smaller sidewall height will be a harder ride. The best thing I did to my old Audi estate was swap the tyres from 195/60 to 205/55. Much more grip. As I didn't change the wheels, the ride was unaffected.

Wow... I can only think of complicated things, like the lack of engine braking by dipping the clutch adding to the braking load and stopping the squeal. My brakes squeal, but the mouse is clean. I mean, he has the occasional drink (of rainwater), but steers clear of hard drugs. I can stop the squeal by braking harder. (If the discs are covered in rust you need to get out more... And brake harder!) -
he he he... Size matterz... and I don't even have a Renault! I can't find that tyre explaination, so here goes... E.G. 215/55 R16 V The 215 is the width in mm. The 55 is sidewall height as a percentage of the width. R means Radial (how the tyre is constructed) 16 is the wheel diameter in inches. V is the speed rating. 215/55 R16 and 225/45 R17 have nearly the same overall diameter, but the 17" are bigger wheels.

My guess is when you dip the clutch you are either releasing the brakes or braking a little harder and stopping the squeal? (If you dip the clutch when you are stationary and it squeals, then we have a clutch problem.) -
The overall diameter will still be the same. Smaller wheels will have a bigger sidewall depth. There was a recent post where someone explained the width/ratio, etc. Very good post - ought to go in the FAQ. Now where was it...

Do you mean squeal from the brakes? My brakes squeal too, but theres plenty of life left in the pads and discs - they were new when we got the car 10 months ago, and we've only done 4,000 miles. (If you do mean clutch, squeal from the clutch is usually (but not always) the release bearing.) -
Market forces! 15" is less fashionable. (I would imagine that wider tyres are more expensive to make.)

Right now I have in my CD changer... Doves - Lost souls Tubes - White Punks on Dope Panic! at the Disco - A fever you can't sweat out Snow Patrol - Eyes open Lost Prophets - Liberation Transmission Radiohead - Pablo Honey Highway Star gets my vote, too. My favourite Deep Purple is 'In Rock'. Classics I keep in my car are (as well as In Rock): All the other Radiohead albums Massive Attack - Mezzanine Goldie - Timeless Propaganda - A secret wish Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape Pink Floyd - Echoes Doves - Some Cities and Last Broadcast

Cool car. I especially like the wheels - they'd look good an a gal.

I have a road angel and use this as a GPS receiver for TomTom on a PDA. (By the way, I'm not recommending this solution - Road Angel is too expensive IMHO). What I like about the road angel is that when I'm in a town (or Galaxy) far far away, and I'm not familiar with where I'm going, and TomTom tries to send me the wrong way up a one-way-street, and I have a taxi cab parked on my rear bumper and hooting.... If I accelerate out of trouble, and there is a camera there, I'll be warned. The laser detector bit is, as others have said, next to useless. However, I have been targeted, and it's been interesting to see just how far away they can get you! Believe me, unless you have significantly better than 20/20 vision you won't see them until they have nabbed you. The way this might work is in heavy traffic, where you pick up rebounds. I'm not really convinced either way. The other angle on this is the money-making, self-financing bureaurocracy that has sprung up. They are criminalising otherwise law-abiding drivers, maybe doing 47 in a 40 limit due to a momentary lapse in concentration. The 'camera partnerships' don't care if you drive like an idiot, have an unroadworthy vehicle, with no insurance and put out enough pollution and carcinogens to kill an entire school. You won't care about this if you own such a vehicle, as you you won't register it anyway...

...also acceleration rate change... Engineers call it 'Jerk'. <_< That's why petrol engined cars, for the same brake horse power, accelerate quicker than diesels. However, this is true only if you rev the nuts off them. Turbo petrol engines are always quicker than either. IMHO it's the turbo that's king, not the petrol or the diesel.

he he he Porky's??? Never seen that one. But I'm sure that they've all been done before!

Great stuff! While you are there, can you ask for me: - Why were Allegro steering wheels square? - Where is the 'sky hook' supposed to be fitted? - What is the purpose of the 'long weight' that I was sent to stores to pick up? - Just who is Mr C. Lion, whose car is ready to pick up, to be found on a Whipsnade telephone number? - And who is Mike Hunt, and how did he get lost in the showroom? Has anyone seen him? - What is BS3704, and why do mechanics need to know about this standard? Cheers,
