  1. hi Zeplin43 sounds like the car has gone into limp mode turbo prob just to clarify please let us know what colour smoke was ? have you lost any coolent ? have you lost any oil ?
  2. do you park on street or drive ? am thinking pesky kids its not easy to piss in the petrol tank any more not like the good old days B)
  3. am thinking throttle position sensor or something more basic the variable exhaust valves are sticking open on the exhaust at high revs because the oil is the wrong viscosity or is old sticky sludge either way , it would need an oil change .
  4. Hi carl i have worked in a well known electrical shop for more years than i can remember . When customers ask about there repair and I used give a full breakdown, there eyes often glaze over as turned into a long education to which the customer never seemed to return for new business. so as i got older i realized the customer was in the first case only pretending to be interested to be polite as its better that the customer doesn't think that they haven't invested there life savings in screaming pile of poo So in turn i am also polite ;) and say it's ready to use phases like "would you believe it was only the...." Customers like you carl now return in droves politics's eh  clear as mud B)
  5. If youve check your fuel pressure pre jets then I think its got to the fuel pressure regulator rare one if iit though
  6. wastegate actuator on the turbo could be stuck some other things to look for in the rear view BLUE SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: Engine is burning engine oil, injection timing is incorrectly set. BLACK SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: Too much fuel is being delivered to the engine or the fuel that is being delivered is not correctly atomised, Exhaust Gas Reciculation (EGR) system has failed or is incorrectly set of has become clogged with soot. WHITE SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: If the ambient temperature is low, steam which is normal and usually clears, if the smoke never clears, water is entering the engine (cylinder head, head gasket, liner problem). GREY SMOKE from exhaust - Causes: Injection timing is incorrectly set, fuel is not being atomised correctly, something other than diesel has been added to the the fuel tank. METAL PARTICLES FOUND IN FUEL FILTER - Cause: Injection components have begun to disintegrate.

  12. Cortina MK3 wow you OLD FART . still on the original Front Brake Pads Impressive! bet you can get the that last bit of marmite out of the jar. you remind me of me dad telling me his cars was 5 times cheaper to insure than mine and how he could make tyres last 70 thousand miles, me saying a glint in my eye that i enjoy paying it as he was 40 years older than me :) i was 17 at the time and insuring a vauxhaul viva. i only made 2 payments before i stuck it in a ditch . :) insurance was
  13. After rereading the thread i noticed you mentioned secondary air injection cuts in it is possible that the air injection hose is on last legs and i forgot my golden rule of checking the basic stuff 'pipes. dammed beer makes me head fuzzy  . Anyway look at the pipe that puts secondary air injection into the head here's a good explanation of it http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1995162
  14. If you have checked all tubes for an air leak then sounds like MAF sensor is on its way out ,giving out lots of errors in it death throws.
  15. my thinking is you pay your money and get exactlty what you pay for . you buy a galaxy; from a student who think oil levels and brake pads are ok cos there no lights on then you would expect that it will need some work. from a do it yoursef expert home mechanic bodger you expect it to vere to the left or right or both and they will explain away clanking sounds as i havent used it for a while might just need a run. from grandad he tells you i never change the oil cos its cheaper to top up with asda's finesest cough cheapest never had to bother with visconttttity in my day and those whose say you neeed coolent water's always worked cos there's always to much coolent in car's these days from top rated friend of a friend's mate in pub you expect to be sold a bag of .. from hard luck just lost job (again) then expect food to be top of there priorty list so essentaily if you buy a lemon dont squeal when its a duffer or moan cos its the man who's made it fault because i guarentee at some point some unqualified student of life has had a hand in building your car.spend a little extra service it fully belts n'sparky tyres and oil n'shim's vag it and cross fingers. ps;remember not to buy a car built on a friday afternoon.. ppS;mkvr6 was right about satnav owner's i feel a similer feeling here...

  19. For starters I woulld guess Fuel filter at worst fuel pump
  20. hi I had the non start problem not so long ago,A way to test if pats is faulty is try disconnecting positive and neg battery leave for 20 mins then put your key in the lock and turn to position one then reconnect battery neg first if it starts then ecu ok if you turn off and on again it wont start as pats cuts in The pats system consists of a chip in your key a ring sensor that's on the steering coloum a wire from sensor that connects the pats box which lives under the ecu box which is behind the clocks which has some white wires to relays for fuel pump etc . in my case the pats had failed so i got new keys door handles ecu and pats for 45 squid from ebay good luck with yours apparently theres a bloke on peterborough market that can do a key ^^ which will work for 45 also don't ask me who i think it might be urban legend as bloke who told me does talk it a lot.
  21. well the way i see it is that you have done your upmost to maintain a degree of compassion and respect for your fellow motorist over the years a genuine 'knight of the road' yes its true from time to time you will meet unscrupulous scroungers or freeloaders the dreggs of society. As an upright honest easy going decent sort you will of course be annoyed by the crap they try an tell others, idoits have a nack of getting other idoits to believe however it would be a rare one if some one with an ounce of commen sense beleived. So chin up 'knight of the road' let the guru's do there stuff and move on to more important stuff and let karma sort out the rest ;)
  22. Airbag removal Important remember your dealing with an explosive device not wishing to panic you but keep the bag on a spare seat out of harms way not on yer lap. so you can drop a peice of metal across the pins and set it off. *my toptip have you mobile phone handy and take pictures of what youve disconnecting so you get it right on reassembly 1 disconnect batterys red and black and leave car for cuppa tea 15 mins to let juice discharge maybe more if you like digestives. 2 have a 2 1/2 in long approx socket spare so you can logde it in the steering rack at the bottom near clutch as the rack is spring loaded sometimes spring back once you have taken off wheel and getting wheel back on is a pain 3 now remove the plastic casing to expose wiring you will see a yellow connector thats the airbag connector disconnect it now the trickey bit is between the wire is thread between the indicator stalk and cd selector unscrew the 2 screws so the wire comes free it should have some foam aroound it to protect 4 Now remove the two bolts holding on the airbag hold into the airbag you will see a yellow connector take note of which way round its connected. 5 Now remove the blue bolt 6 remove wheel carefully now you will see the copper v shape spring you can drive aroung with bag disconnected it will just show up on the idiot display until you get bits
  23. http://www.howcast.com/videos/20363-How-To...tions-and-Plans well i believe maybe the truth is out there X
  24. I use the cheapest i can find as the ecu adjusts the engine retard automaticly. On my mondeo you have to adjust a wire to use very low ron . Thought about sticking some acetone (nail varnish remover) in once to increase octane but not sure if fuel tank would melt . food for thought On the list of jobs I never got around to was to set up a car to run on petrol and water apprently its very easy and not an urban legend.
