  1. I regularly tow a huge Tow-A-Van which is oftem up to the limit for the Gal on weight, no problems so far. I do however ease off the throttle when a change is imminent to put less stress on the transmission and also relatively gentle to get it all rolling. Once going the Gal is a brilliant towing car, even fully laden it just cruises up the hills in top gear no problem, great torque from the diesel which is perfect for towing. Regards - John
  2. I've run mine way down below the red sector on the guage and it starts facing uphill or downhill no problem. Looks like you might have to have the tank out and have a look at the fuel pick arrangement. Regards - John
  3. It sounds very much like lack of fuel, i.e. the fuel pump not running. Check the fuses as a start. I don't think the two things are linked, more a coincidence. Not sure where it's located on the Gal but you couldn't have knock the fuel pump inertia switch during your investigations could you ? It's a switch that isolates the fuel pump when you have a crash, reset by pressing the button. This would be my best guess. The theory being, the idle failed when the fuel pressure dropped, you then continued on what was left in the filter and now its all gone! Hope this helps. Regards - John
  4. It certainly was the start of the real engine developments, it's sound and power output unique in it's day. I do wish I'd mothballed that car, it would have been worth an absolute fortune today. Regards - John
  5. I bought my first ever sports car from repairing those things, a trusty old 'proper' Lotus 7 complete with twin webers and Ford BDA engine. That really was a fun car, no heater, no hood, no creature comforts but immense fun. Regards - JB (45-50 mpg <_< )
  6. Funny that because in the 70's I too used to spen my idle time reconning lucas alternators namely 17ACR, usually brushes but sometimes rectifiers and yes we can agree to differ but I do know this subject. The evidence from Andrew T also support what I KNOW to be true ! Within the alternator there is the STATOR and the ROTOR. The STATOR if fixed around the outside and carries the windings that generate the 3 phase power that is rectified into DC to charge the battery. The rotor also has windings, these are powered via slip rings from the control unit. The greater the voltage applied here, the greater the magnetic field and the higher the output voltage and hence current. The problem starts when you first start the engine, theoutput from the recitfier diodes goes straight to the battery, power is needed to kick start the charging process, the feed via the ignition light id fed to the control unit and then onto the slip rings of the rotor. This small current creates the small magnetic field to kick start the power generation. Once this has started the control unit feeds itself from the alternator and varies the voltage on the rotor as vehicle load and battery state require. The TIS CD also says "With the ignition on and the engine not running, voltage is supplied through the charging system warning indicator " However, when your bulb does blow, remember what I said and then help yourself to a slice of humble pie <_< TTFN - John
  7. If the fault code points to throttle switch, double check the wiring all the way back to the ECU, disconnect and re-connect all connectors involved. Regards - John
  8. Sorry, you're WRONG. The bulb is in the circuit to the alternator and provides the current to excite the windings to start the charging process, take the bulb out and try it, you'll find that the alternator won't charge. If anyone gets stuck with this situation, you can normally start the charging process by revving the engine to 4-5000 rpm, the residual magnetism is sufficient to start the charging process, once started it will continue until the next time the engine is stopped. Regards - John
  9. Well actually yes I can, BUT in the day time I do voluntary work for the ambulance service as a first responder, I get called out to RTA's, Breathing Difficulties, Cardiac Arrests and Trauma cases. The kit I have to carry Oxygen, Airways, Masks, Collars, Bandages, DeFibrillator, Suction etc comes in 2 large and 1 medium rucksack. When I get the call we aim to be there in 4 minutes or less. Now I know a world record sprinter can manage 4 minute mile so 2 miles home kinda stops me ! So in answer to your question, yes I do at times walk to work and I do enjoy it BUT on a day to fay when I'm on duty I have to be ready for a very quick departure from school. Regards - John P.S. Yes the 115 is fine as an F.R. Vehicle !
  10. Oh great one, I admit to only having experience of my lowly 115 it must the extra 15 gee gee's under the bonnet that makes the difference. You'll be telling me next that you have one those old fashioned clutch thingy's ....... how quaint
  11. Hey come on don't understate the case they are VERY,VERY,VERY,VERY smooth, refined and economical :( Regards - John
  12. True but still significant, I don't know of any petrol Gals that can manage close on 50mpg on a run. Over Christmas I did an epic journey (for me), Gainsborough > Newport > Esher in Surrey > Gainsborough 500+ miles 49+ MPG (from memory 49.6) Regards - John
  13. Ignore the petrol heads they've been sniffing too much in the way of petrol fumes. Mt TDi gives out virtually no smoke hot or cold, is NOT noisy and is a breeze to drive. Don't look on it as
  14. A common cause of repeated disc failure is incorrect fitting. It is essential that the runout is checked and that the mating faces are absolutely clean otherwise the situation, like yours, gets worse and worse. Regards - John
  15. Search the forum for Aux Heater or Booster Heater and all will be revealled. Welcome to the Heater Club 2005
  16. Welcome to the Heater Club 2005
  17. It's sounds very much like the booster heater pump from what you describe, why do you think it's coming from the autobox ??? Regards - John
  18. I don't know the layout on the 2.0 Galaxy, the engine I beleive is the same as the Scorpio. You need to locate the exhaust manifold. There will be a pipe connecting from there to the inlet manifold above. To check it, remove it and see if you can blow / get compressed air through it. If you can it's clean / replace time. Maybe some of the others with a parts diagram could post a piccy to help ?? Regards - John
  19. If it is the EGR stuck open, this doesn't show up, there's no sensor to detect lack of oxygen in the inlet manifold all that happens is that the fuelling gets shut down because the exhaust is showing a rich mixture hence a total lack of performance but no faults !!! Regards - John
  20. No chance of that till after I draw my pension or need a pace maker <_< Need a pacemaker eh, you're that scared of the torque, you really shouldn't worry too much it's all nicely controllable <_<
  21. You could do a REAL upgrade ............... fir a TDi <_< Regards - JB
  22. I don't think the 2.0 has the MAF problems. Not 100% on the Gal installation, certainly not on the Scorpio. The MAF seems to hit the diesel variants of the Gal (not mine YET!!!) Regards - John
  23. The air filter will not make that much difference. There can be issues however with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). There's a pip connected between the exhaust manifold and the inlet manifold with a valve in it. At certain times and conditions when the combustion temperature is high the valve opens and admits exhaust gas into the inlet manifold, the net result is the lowering of combustion temperature by limiting the anount of oxygen in the cylinder. The valves can stick open so it's permanently in this condition, my Scorpio used to do exactly what you're saying, lifeless and at constant speeds it felt hesitant. In my case the valve had failed, I fitted a new one and it fely like the engine had been turbocharges it was really dramatic. The fault on my Scorpio didn't show up on diagnostics either. Hope this helps Regards - John
  24. Damn it, he is right...... http://www.investinportugal.pt/MCMSAPI/Hom...ive/AutoEuropa/ ------------------------------------- http://promote.opera.com/medium/simplythebest234x60.png You mean you actually doubted him AND admit that you did ???? Do you realise how much danger you've put you and your family in ?  :o :D
  25. I would suggest if poss getting some digital pictures of your old unit and sending them to potential suppliers as well and get them to do likewise. One further thought, isn't there someone in Oz that could recon your existing unit ?? Regards - John
