You can use red diesel, after all it's ordinary diesel with dye and chemical markers in it, but if you get dipped there's a fine of

Ahem, there isn't a standard production V6 that gets near the torque of a diesel as far as I know, c'mon then tell us what this wonderful V6 is but it has to beat 310nm. So far as where this lot came from somebody (El Dingo) made the statement that diesels were crap and he drives a minging 2.3 ! Fight Fight Fight, common you lot, don't let these wimpy petrol heads get their way :o Caio - JB

Towing A Caravan
johnb80 replied to purplemadboy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I drag a tow-a-van 220d around (max 2 tonnes), I don't load it fully but with careful use of the throttle and anticipation at junctions etc I get about 29 mpg on average. Regards - John -
You can't shut me up that easy. Are you sure you don't have coil packs on a 2.3? every one I've had dealings with has had them and theyre well known a) to fail and  for the wiring to bake and crack. Must admit it's not been on Gals but on Scorpio's but it is the same engine. The 2.3 is the smoothest 4 potter petrol I've ever driven by a long, long way. Caio - JB

My cambelt wont be snapping thanks, I have it serviced properly. You probably haven't heard of coil packs failing on petrols but I'm sure you will experience it, coil packs arn't a scheduled service item. Add to that idle problems when the air valve gets gummed up and there's more. When you look at the Ford figures the differences with V6 auto v 2.3 auto is pretty much the same i.e.

Diesels that wont rev, why on earth do you want it to? it has more torque at just above tickover than your weakling 2.3 flat out. Still if it keeps you happy thats fine, it gives us all a laugh. You mention MPG's well lets have a look, urban cycle V6=19.2, 2.3=20.2 Extra Urban V6=33.2, 2.3=36.2 and combined V6=26.2, 2.3=28.0 So now lets move on to a little maths. Assuming 10,000 miles per year the fuel used would cost V6=

Shut up, you know I'm jealous ! Just had a go in my mates new discovery, absolutely amazing silky smooth v8 auto, pulls like a train, handles well, very, very quiet. When I got out he then told me it was a V6 diesel. I had to look under the bonnet, I could not beleive it. No diesel clatter at all and the sound..... incredible. How is it going across the pond? do you need an assistant  I just don't see the point of the 2.3 at all, if you can afford the fuel and you want petrol may as well have the VR6 and have some fun and a nice sounding engine. If performance doesn't bother you then get a diesel and save loadsa money but a 2.3......... Regards - JB
-
No it doesn't sound right at all. My daily trip to work is only 2 miles each way (yes I could walk but I have a lot of stuff to carry), mine doesn't smoke at all, it never does less than 42 mpg going to work and back and it does seem to perform well. The diesel pisses all over the petrol torque, fuel consumption and depreciations wise. How you can think that your vehicle emitting nearly 50% more CO2 into the atmosphere and a fuel consumption nearly doubled across the range is more environmentally friendly, beggars belief. 2.3 petrol is the CRAP one to have, almost the same consumption as the VR6 and similar performance to a frugal diesel. Yeah, what a sensible choice  :D  <Rant begins :D > Regards - John B

Just shows how many times I've opened the bonnet on my Gal ;) Regards - JB

I would get a new rad cap to start with, if it's not holding the pressure in the system this is exactly what happens. Regards - John

Question For Factory Fitted Sat Nav Owners
johnb80 replied to dulux72's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thats not correct. The speed pulse is used to make the map move etc, the satellites are used for reference and updating a position every 30 to 50 metres. My Clarion system as with most other SATNAV's (Not the PDA/Phone types) have a built in compass and gyro to keep the accuracy good. If running on satellites alone it will only update about every 30 to 40 metres dependent on the number of satellites being received. On my van I had a VDO SatNav just after leaving home (Gainsborough, Lincs) the antenna for the satnav failed. My journey continued with amazing accuracy all the way to Brighton, on arrival it was out by about 130 metres. Regards - John -
Question For Factory Fitted Sat Nav Owners
johnb80 replied to dulux72's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
These system SHOULD calibrate themselves, the pulses per distance will vary as tyre wear, pressures differ etc. The system knows it's position on a regular basis and can therefore reset it's own distance / pulse relationship. My clarion system took about 20 minutes to get it sorted, go for a drive ! Regards - John -

And of course the damage to the cabling has caused problems with the head unit, replace the whole lot just to be safe  Regards - JB -

Faulty Instrument Cluster (& Video System)
johnb80 replied to a topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
Write to the garage, remind them they had many opportunities to fix the reported problem during the warranty time and failed. The fault has continued and indeed has now become worse. Obviously the fault was present during the warranty period and therefore should be covered. If they don't agree to fix it take them to the small claims court. The sale of goods act goes well beyond the 12 months warranty often given by manufacturers of most items. I purchased a digital camera that failed after 19 months, the supplier was not interested, I took some advise, took the to the small claims court and on the principle that it was reasonable to expect a camera to last longer than 19 months, clearly it must have been sub standard when new and therefore I was entitled to a full refund and costs. Have a word with trading standards and see what they have to say. Regards - John -
Get a garage to put the exhaust gas analyser over the neck of the expansion bottle, that will confirm head gasket if exhaust gasses are present. They shouldn't charge much for that it's literally cap off, probe over the neck to sniff the vapours and watch the meter. Regards - John
-
An easy way to check for head gasket is to get a garage to put the exhaust analyser proble over the neck of the expansion bottle. If there's any exhaust gas there you will get the usual readings HC, CO etc this would then point to head gasket. Other possible causes water pump, thermostat, blocked rad (does all the rad get warm?), pressure cap. Regards - John

All the usual things - check that all the electrics work, cables through doors and tailgate can cause problems so double check locking, windows etc. The engine should be sound and though a bit under powered can go for many, many miles. Check the passenger footwell for water ingress (many reasons for this) if it's wet, double check the ECU's under the passenger seat. Make sure ABS is spot on i.e. warning light working and extinguished whilst driving. Finally check that the aircon works if fitted. Regards - JB

Humming & Tapping Noise After Shut-off
johnb80 replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
You can only just hear mine if it's deadly quiet surroundings i.e. not windy or a busy street etc. I would go back to the dealer and ask him to demo another Galaxy and see if it makes the same noise, when it doesn't insist that it's changed. Regards - JB -
I thoughts were if you identified a problem via VC and then replaced the unit it may be cabling / ecu (unlikely) at fault hence no change with new unit fitted. Regards - JB

Exactly how do you know the old one was er..... not working ?

Sat Nav Is The Latest Target For Thieves
johnb80 replied to HJT's topic in I.C.E (In Car Entertainment) Discussion
My Clarion system (built in) is located in the centre compartment on the dash, open the lid, use it, close the lid. No evidence of SatNav at all. You're absolutely right about SatNav thefts I had my van windows smashed twice and the head unit stolen, once whilst I was delivering a parcel top a customer. Regards - JB
