  1. its all the totally dedicated DISCIPLES that make this go on so long.
  2. The use of petrol in the cylinder head once removed. Turn the head upside down and you will see all the valves facing upwards if your pour a little petrol in the recess where the valves are and it does not weep through the seal then there is a good chance that those valves are not damaged. The repair is to replace any damaged valves, lap the new ones into the seats and replace all the hydraulic cups (known sometimes as tappets due to the noise) and then recheck the sealing of each before reassembly. Best of luck.
  3. If you had low speed contact eg when turning the engine over with the starter the damage will be quite different, hope fully it will have punched the valve followers and they may have burst as they are hollow if this is the case, possible because the valves and the pistons are directly in line, then the valves may still be serviceable. Try a drop of petrol in each head recess before removing the valves to check for the sealing of the valaves it may save a lot of work lapping in new valves. A new set of hydraulic lifters is only around the forty quid so you may be lucky.
  4. Watch this its wonderful
  5. The tightening sequence as far as I can remember is as follows: shown as is looking down on the engine from above and in front of the car. 10 4 2 6 8 5 7 1 3 9 And at each of the following values: Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in four stages. 1 Stage 1: 40 Nm. 2 Stage 2: 60 Nm. 3 Stage 3: 90 degrees. 4 Stage 4: 90 degrees.
  6. Got to agree with Tim if the leak is indeed in the master cylinder which according to ALLEN ford there has been a known issue with, then a cheaper repair is indeed in the offing. But on another note if you want any pointers Tim I have recorded as much as I could onto digital video of the clutch change. And I will br writing up a post for here once i get my hands clean, :D :D <_<
  7. Tim I am a mechanical engineer who restores cars and writes training instructions for maintenance technicians and has twenty years plus experience. So as I say probably not a DIY change. However two engineers and a Tea maker can manage it in about 8 hours along with all the support tools.
  8. The concentric slave cyliner it self is about
  9. The belt length is dependant on whether you have air conditioning or not if you dont then its a short belt if you do its a longer one. Halford (sorry didnt mean to swear) have an excellent listing for the Gals.
  10. The graunchy sound you describe is probably the cable jamming in themotor/gearbox and not just the window out of the clamps, its very unlikely that it is just the clamps. Common fault I am afraid as for the location of the clips trial and error but when I get home i can copy and paste the relevant page from the manual but sure someone will be able to see them as you prise the panel off. BTY the cables on mine got replaced with bicycle cables and screwed terminals and worked for about a year then packed up again. Best of luck and watch out for the errant females they really do bite.... :16: :16:
  11. Only the women in Veccies bite.
  12. I think there should be voteing buttons so we can choose who gets to do the brushing (hoover broke) for the next week..... Give em both jankers till they squeal on the guilty one.
  13. Yep Defo the MAF, unplug it and try without, if its got "go" again, get new one
  14. Welcome Mike and I am sure it will be very calm in the playground just watch out for erant females running around inside the forum they are mostly harmless but just keep the eyes peeled for em. ;) ;) ;)
  15. It would register a pressure change but I dont think it would identify the valve as it has only a vacuum operation and no sensor in it.
  16. First you have two number 4s :> Anyway the EGR could indeed be the cause of the problem slowing down from high speed is likely to have caused the valve to open on overun of the engine if as I have now come to belive the EGR is like many other diesel EGR it will be very clogged with exhaust carbons. I have come to understand this after having several problems with the EGR ona 320D BMW and effectively its the same valve on the Galaxy and also just for info it suffers the same problem as the Gal with the MAF. Although the BMW forums recommend cleaning the MAF ! Anyway back top your squeal it is likely that the EGR being dirty is slow to close after opening at overun temperatures it should close once it cools down but if thisis the case it will stick again, might be worth getting at it and either cleaning it or replacing it. Best of luck if you do can we get a blow by blow account so I know what to do when it comes to mine ?
  17. In 2007, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in Tewkesbury , England and said, "Once again, the Earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me. Build another Ark and save two of every living thing, along with a few good humans." He gave Noah CAD drawings, saying, "You have six months to build the Ark before I start the unending rain of forty days and forty nights." Six months later, the Lord returned unto Noah and found him weeping in his yard, but of the Ark , there was no sign. "Noah!" the Lord roared," I am about to start the rain, Where is the Ark ?" "Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed. I needed Building Regulations approval because the Ark was to be over 30metres. I've been arguing with the Fire Brigade who insist that it is fitted with a sprinkler system and fireproof doors and my neighbours claim that I should have obtained planning permission prior to building the Ark in my garden because it is a development of the site - even though in my view it is a temporary structure, but the roof is too high. I had to appeal to the Secretary of State for a decision. The Local Area Access Group complained that my ramp was going to be too steep and the inside of the Ark was not fully accessible to the disabled, and that there were no disabled toilets and the gangways were too narrow for wheelchairs Then the Department of Transport demanded a bond to be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. - I told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they wouldn't listen to me. Getting the wood was another problem.. All of the decent trees have Tree Preservation Orders upon them and we live in an area of Special Scientific Interest, set up in order to preserve the spotted owl that lives around here. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but again, they wouldn't listen. When I started to gather the animals, the RSPCA threatened me with prosecution. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued that the accommodation was too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space. The gay rights activists threatened to hold a demo in my garden as they learned that I was planning on only taking on a female and male of each species - they said that was homophobic and was against the Civil Liberties Act. Then the County Council, The Environment Agency and The Rivers Authority ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they had conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood. I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission on how many ethnic minorities I'm supposed to hire for the building team. The Trade Unions say that I cannot use my sons as they insist that I have to hire only CSCS accredited workers with Ark-building experience. To make matters worse, Customs & Excise have seized all of my assets, claiming that I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species. So forgive me, my Lord, but it would take me at least another ten years to finish this Ark. " Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky. Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "You mean you are not about to destroy the world, Lord?" "No, Noah" said the Lord, "The Government has already beaten me to it."
  18. I dont want to fuel the fire on technical understanding but i have to point out if the timing (cam) belt goes the engine will not "race" it wil stop almost instantly as "having no valves" has the effect of stopping the ability of the engine to induct fuel and air and also to compress the fuel air mixture and subsequently burn the aforesaid fuel air mixture. The most likely event is that the engine lifted the lubricant out of the sump through either the EGR valve going faulty or more likely the rings failing on comression and allowing bypass to occur. A runaway diesel is quite common with worn bores. Either way a replacement is the best route if you feel the remains of your Gal would have the supportive value or indeed if it is financially viable for yourself.
  19. Nah I have heard its humming when in the Veccy with the tape playing but only thongs in the Galaxy as it had a CD player for thongs.
  20. Can I be so bold as to pull this back onthe original subject ? Why would we want to make a Galaxy breath easier or run cooler on the oil burners we have a aux heater cos the engine dont get hot enough already. I am sure I havent been dreaming this was a thread about Galaxy's and breathing ?
  21. Get a spare engine at about 500 quid plus the same again for fitting and you will at least retain that plus the extra value of the vehicle if you let it go its worth nothing.
  22. As seatkid has said if its a none OEM lambda sensor there have been many issues regarding the ability of the ecu to correctly sense and therefore adjust the mixture of fuel air and this will result in huge emmisions. The high visco oil is also a possiblity you should stick to the standard oil as this can generate unusual engine burn conditions, also the coil packs may be now running slow causing late burn and high emissions this would also make the engine sound tappety as the burn occurs during the transition of the valves in their cycle and there for more emmisions. Basically all you have done and more, air oil filters and fresh oil along with an OEM sensor may resolve your issues.
  23. RULE 4: Always carry a brolly in the back. Reason: When the wipers fail you will end up walking.
  24. If you have a second key is it on the same key ring ? or do you have any other keys on the same key ring? If there is a second transponder in the same area as the key you may experience a malfunction of the code when trying to start the car, I have the same when I leave my BMW key on the same ring as it also has a transponder and is active when the immobiliser polls my Galaxy key. If this is not the case it may be that the "chip" is failing to respond to the immobilier ring and this will need a replacement key.
  25. Blimey its like a deja vu ! Sticks and stones come to mind.
