  1. The accelerator problem could well be the actual pedal unit, its a fly by wire system and a fault that has been covered on here before, use the search button and you will probably find a few threads on the subject. The brake squeal is more likely to be the brake linings than the wheel bearing. a wheel bearing on the way out will have more of a whine or rumble than a squeal, and is more likely to get worse with speed. Check your pads, if they are worn then replace them, if not, try smearing some copper grease on the METAL side of the pad, between the pad and the piston, this usually does the trick. For info on replacing pads, again use the search function, the pistons screw back into the caliper and although straight forward, can be tricky if you "Go in blind" so to speak.
  2. Previous badge thread Here you go
  3. Use the search function, I'm fairly sure this has been covered before. Someone bought Fleabay badges and they were the wrong size or something.
  4. The seals on oil filters are quite easily damaged if overtightened. Has it been leaking since it was last changed?
  5. And at the end of the day its only a car. Whilst you are no doubt sad to see it go, there are so many more important things in life.
  6. Going off on a tangent here, how much is the cheapest and most expensive fuel near you? For me petrol(unleaded) is 96.9 (Morrisons) and 99.9 at a private BP.
  7. Missing the point completely, whether a commercial vehicle or a car the gearing is such that it enables the vehicle to be driven in a way that matches road speed to engine power delivery figures, it is therefore no more than common sense that if a vehicle is designed to be driven at 70mph in a gear that keeps the engine in its most efficient state, than that gear will be unable to keep that engine in its most efficient state if that road speed is almost halved. Where exactly in the rev range the VW units power delivery comes in I do not profess to know, but the power band will still be across a narrow range of revs not a single point (such as 1800 rpm).
  8. A lot of HGV's (LGV's) have the tacho not only marked numerically for RPM but also showing, yellow , green and red zones. These indicate, not only the RPM of the engine, but also when the engine is running most efficiently. Keep it in the green and you will save a fortune on your fuel bills. Now as I have posted previously, I work for an international tyre company, I am also a director and transport manager of a small/mid size private haulage company (our family business). I dont want to start an argument here (especially with you MO4 ;) ), your engine may not be in your opinion labouring at 40mph in 6th, but it will not be running at its most efficient at such speeds in that gear. Diesel engines have a very narrow spread of power, this is why 6 speed transmissions are used on diesel cars, it is easier to keep the engine in its power band with a 6 speed than it is with a 5 speed. This means it is easier to keep your car on the power whilst driving, not just for performance but for economy. In an old diesel clunker, such as a 70's transit, you put your foot down to increase the speed and there was a direct link between you putting your foot down and how much fuel was delivered to the engine. But a modern Electronically governed diesel takes all sorts of measurements and calculates how much fuel is delivered to the engine dependant on a plethora of other conditions (road speed/air temp/engine temperature/gearing profile etc). The best way to keep an engine economical is to keep it running at its most efficient speed (engine speed NOT road speed). An internal combustion engine is not terribly efficient at the best of times, but when run under optimum speeds (or over for that matter) then they are even less efficient. You may not realise, but often it will require more throttle to run a car at 40mph in 6th than in 5th, or even 4th. On a fly by wire system such as the sharalaxhambra has, it is impossible to measure throttle input against fuel input to the engine as this is all calculated by the computer, having the accelerator 1/2 on in 1st will not be using the same amount of fuel as 1/2 on in 6th. Looking at the facts, a diesel engine has a narrow spread of power across the rev range, typically most power (torque)is delivered between 2500 and 3000 rpm in a car, much lower (1600-2100)rpm in a commercial vehicle. So, keep your(diesel) car between 2500 and 3000 rpm and you should maintain the greatest fuel ecomomy because your engine will be running at its most efficient. Under these RPM and your burning fuel just to try and maintain momentum, above these and you will be burning more fuel than it is possible for your engine to translate to power. If your car has 6 gears and is designed to run in excess of 70mph in top gear with the narrow power band that a diesel engine has then it is impossible for it to be efficient in top gear at 40mph. If it were, VAG/Ford wouldn't be selling a 6 speed diesel, they'd have a 2 speed instead.

Who are "We" and the "readers" and what exactly are the organised meetings? (which specific organisation or groups of people)
  10. Yes, GPS was on and I had switched it from 9600 to 4800 baud, at which point it said something like waiting for GPS signal rather than NO GPS device found, so I guess it was configured correctly. I was at work at the time and couldnt test it. By the time I got home and tried it again, it said "No GPS device found" despite being on the correct device and Baud rate. So I put SmartST back on and will try the TT6 again when my new SD comes. Cheers for the help though.

There are arguments for both sides on wether to curb the freedom of the press. I on one hand would love to see the press stopped from printing stories (& Pictures) of stories such as the Fake iraqi getting p155ed on in the back of an army truck a couple of years ago. You know, the story that lead to the resignation of Piers Morgan. And then the recent Iranian hostage situation, all our boys (& Girl) were heroes until they came back home and were villified for selling their stories by those sections of the press that were unable to secure exclusive stories with the more prominent members of the group. I mean, why the F()(K should they not have been allowed to sell their stories? The whole sordid event was in the public domain because of the freedom of our press, this was possibly these individuals only chance to lay down some secure foundations for thier future -
  12. Ok, got home and no GPS device found? So, ive put SmartST back on which works fine, and ive ordered a second SD card. When it comes, I will be back on for help installing the TT6 and getting the voices to work. As I said I'm a PDA novice, so I will have a fiddle over the next couple of days till the new card comes.and then be back on for some help no doubt! At least till then the Satnav works. Cheers for the help so far. I'll be back!
  13. Cheers Dave, You got it! Im inside at work at the moment, so cant try it, but after changing to 4800 the screen now says "waiting for gps signal" rather than "no device found"
  14. Ok, so ive downloaded and installed tomtom 6, but when it comes to selecting the GPS device, i have a choice of Tom tom bluetooth, tomtom wired, otherblutooth or other NMEA wired receiver (which i have selected). then i select the baud rate (9600) according to the navman Pin 570 handbook, but it defaults to com port 3 whan the handbook says com 8. How do i change the com port settings? As all i get on the screen is No Gps Device! And im a PDA novice! Im off to work now but will be back after 9.30, cheers in advance for any help.
  15. Cheers, will do.
  16. Cheers both, ebay here I come.
  17. I was thinking about putting TomTom software on my Navman PDA, the question is, which version should I opt for? There are a few versions on ebay for less than
  18. Thats the favourite if you ask me!
  19. Should of got a TDI  .. Seriously though, I did less than 3500k in the year ive owned it, I couldn't justify putting an extra grand in an equivalent condition tdi just for our run about second car. Maybe when i get rid of the mondeo I'll look for a new(ish) Gal and replace the old Gal with a smaller car.
  20. I recently added a post about a knackered cat causing loss of power on a petrol. I was suprised how cheap they are now, if you look online you can find Cat's for as little as
  21. The clicking from under the bonnet is likely to be caused by the fact that the battery has been nearly flattened by repeated or extended cranking periods trying to start the engine after it cut out. The noise is the starter solenoid trying to engage. The battery will recover a little charge if left for a while, hence the fact that it started in the morning. You should probably put the battery on charge overnight. As for the reason its playing up at the moment, i really dont know. I'm tempted to say it sounds like its drawing air into the fuel system, but the fact that it started the next morning makes this sound less likely as the air would still be in the system no matter how long you left it. Which pipe came off the turbo? im presuming air intake as this would result in massive loss of power without causing damage to the turbo. Is there more smoke from the exhaust at the moment? especially when the thing is running badly?
  22. I had problems trying to get vista to find the drivers for my external hard drive even though it did not need drivers to run under vista. The fix was quite simple! when you are asked to instal the drivers, make sure the location vista searches is the system drive (usually C), my computer was searching for the drivers in its default location of X(The DVD rom), once I changed the search location i had no more problems. For some reason Vista does not seem to search the system drive when looking for drivers unless you manually set the search location to C
  23. Are the clips that hold the pads in place all present and correct? Any clips or shims fitted behind the pads are there to eliminate brake squeal, and should always be refitted after changing the pads. have you changed the pads recently? and what do you mean by cleaning the pads? A film of copperslip on the back (metallic) side of the pad also can be used to eliminate squealing.
  24. Hmm, chauffeur? in a Galaxy? taxi maybe. galaxies dont make chauffeur cars because they aint that nice to be passengered about in, I'll put my money on taxi or airport transfer. Nice and shiny on the outside, all stop start, short journeys 24/7 and hard graft on the inside! Im not refering to the interior but the drive train, if it didn't say "chauffeur" i'd not be bothered. I'm well into high mileage cars so long as I know their history. Rep mobiles and the like get maintained impeccably, taxis on the other hand get driven into the ground. Millions of gear changes, on and off the brakes, left right, here and there makes for some very worn out cars!
