  1. Where would you say is best place online to get this? I'm not having much luck with that number (online). Thanks.
  2. Hello all. Does anybody know if when you buy a new strut top rubber doughnut mount thing, if the metal plate (under the bonnet) comes with it? Its not clear on the pictures on ebay if it comes or not. The plate on the drivers side on the car now is rusted, and mechanic chap says its probably gonna get butchered to get off, as we need to get strut off to change a broken spring.... Thanks all. (MK1 1999 1.9 tdi, 125k).
  3. Hello. Its m.o.t. time, and i'm sure that one side strut top has gone, possibly both! There is squeaking etc coming when turning, and when i jacked up each side, i could slightly wobble the wheel up and down... I'v heard that the top nuts can be a pain, as they're positioned right where the rain water runs off the window onto them, and thus corrode. I'm looking for hints and especially tips on what to look out for, as to try to make the job run easyier/smoother :( Thanks in advance.
  4. Yep its on right. Sorted. It was the power steer belt slipping. Thanks.
  5. ok i'l renew power belt to rule that out. Alternator pulley has been done a month back. Thanks.
  6. Galaxy 1.9TD Zetec 1999 (V-Reg) Hi. Yes got the under-tray, also it wasn't raining. Has never happened before, even in heavy rain.
  7. Hello all. The steering loss only happened for a couple of seconds (twice in about an hour-never happened before). It seemed to be when i had the right hand down on both occasions, it sort of when completely stiff, i pulled over with a racey heart, but it was then fine when pulled away. That was yesterday, hasn't happened today. It wasn't raining, so it wasn't the belt getting wet and slipping, and the fluid is at the right level. Anyone experienced this before? Is it just the power pump on the way out? Thanks.
  8. Hello chaps. Done the pulley, and that sorted it, excellent, well chuffed, thanks very much for your advice. Tensioner doesn't jump at all now, and no squeaks!
  9. tiz ok, sussed it now. Got too take orfe engine top cover.
  10. Is there some secret to removing the alternator? Got the bolts out and its free, but cant get it out engine bay! darn thing....looks like air intake duct has to come off?? Any tips? ta.
  11. Hello beast. Took belt off, and no pulley doesn't spin easy in other direction (actually not at all), but my galaxy is the earlier model, not the pd engine (99 v reg td), so friend at garage said pulley might not be clutch type pulley? Whatdya think? (i have picture of alterntor i can send if you like) Ta
  12. hello, yes thanks, makes sense. hopefully check it tommorrow, thanks
  13. i havn't checked yet, but just an observation...wouldn't the battery light come on if it was seized, as the alternator wouldn't be spinning, thus not giving out any charge?... Thanks.
  14. Many thanks seat kid, i'l try that and let you know
  15. Thanks for info. I do have a ongoing aux.belt sqreech when under load which i can't seem to get rid off (new belt and tensioner, and there is knocks from the front suspension area/s??? strange...) so it could be the alternater pulley? how would i test that, it seems to turn fine when the engine is running
  16. ok thanks for that, great info... I'm well chuffed with my mk1, but it is (they are) getting old now, and there is a few squeaks coming from the engine area, one i know is an ongoing aux.belt sqreech when under load which i can't seem to get rid off (new belt and tensioner), and there is knocks from the front suspension area/s...but i like it and it tows well.
  17. hello. yes i was wrong, it was the actuall caseing the shaft was in that was worn!! bugger of a job...
  18. Hello again. So if push came to shuv, which mk galaxy would you say is the better? (reliability, performance etc.) Also, why are the sherans and alhambra's of same year more expensive? Thanks.
  19. Thanks for reply's chaps, very much appreciated! Lots of info there. Iwas actually thinking of changing to an automatic, but i don't tthink i will now, as its for towing... So, the mk2's are a bit more VW? What about the mk3?...
  20. Thanks for your reply's, much appreciated.
  21. Hello boys/girls...I'v been informed that the ignition key has a device in it, so the car will only start if the key is actually near the ignition (obviously better in the ignition). Is this correct? So, if i had a key cut the same as the ignition key with no chip in it, i'd still have to have the main key in the car near the ignition before it would start? Any ideas? Thanks. (1.9 td 1999).
