Power Steering Reservoir
Mirez replied to Airrex7's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hummm....The struts are there to keep the tyre in contact with the road, a smoother ride is a byproduct- during heavy braking they stop the front of the vehicle submarining which can allow the rear axle to lock and slide (if you don't have ABS) or if you do it will still have a big effect on braking efficiency - if they are worn, replace them BUT a lot of garages mis-diagnose the Galaxy's somewhat unusual floating top mount as wear so get a second opinion first. The Mk2 has a battery cover on it which will stop you being able to see the reservoir, undo the two thumb screws and lift off the cover - the reservoirs at the front with the yellow cap on - check it when the the vehicles cold. -
On the data plate, second box up from the bottom - left side. On the Mk2 the data plate is by the driver-side bonnet hinge (look down into the scuttle area)

As you look at them, just to the side is a small "nub" of plastic - use it like a level to move them either up or down.

How To Retrofit Sat Nav Into Galaxy
Mirez replied to SteveM's topic in I.C.E (In Car Entertainment) Discussion
There ya go, Finis= 1319217 Its worth noting that the cup holders and all surrounding switch's have different part numbers for the navigation bezel however its cosmetic rather then functional as the old switches will fit and work fine but the revised ones have square corners not the rounded ones. -

You are correct, the Satnav (MFD1) unit needs a new bezel surround which is surprisingly reasonable from Ford at around -

Seatbelt clips, keep the belt tight to the C pillar when you have passengers getting into the 3rd row. -

Physically yes, electrically no - you'll need to rewire. -

ANU is the older engine, found mainly in the Mk1 and is 90bhp (I think) AUY is the most common Mk2 variant and that's the 115 ASZ is the 130bhp version and ASZ1 is the 150bhp version.

Good job other peoples opinions mean very little to me then! http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif I would agree though, having driven the new Galaxy and S-Max neither quite do it, the Galaxy somehow feels more like a van now and the S-max just isn't versatile enough. I took a new Alhambra out the other day which was a complete disappointment, if you ever wanted to drive a car which had 0% flair or character thats the one to go for - there isn't even any feedback from the steering system it just bubbles about... The only benefit I can see to any of the new ones is the uprated power and smoothness of a more modern diesel - however it will take a fair bit more then just that to tempt me away from the Mk2. Hopefully in 2014 when the New Galaxy is released there may be some improvements which make me want it. On another note this one is at 75K now and only being used at the weekends so I did toy with the idea of selling up but having thought about nearly all other models out there there is literally nothing that I fancy changing to and exactly as you say, finding a decent second hand one should I want to buy back would be tricky.

FINALLY sourced one, well the main bit - gonna have to mod the old wheel to accept the new unit until I can locate a proper wheel but I've been missing remote radio controls since the Mk1 Galaxy went - why oh why Ford didn't make this more common place, especially when you consider cars like the Ka and Fiesta have radio controls mounted on the column as standard yet the bigger wider Galaxy hasn't any... weird. Anyway this is the final piece of the retrofit stuff I have to do and then the car will then have every optional extra from both VAG and Ford :P Lots more involved then previous MFSW's I've fitted to Ford's as its mainly VAG components so there is a bloody controller to wire in rather then just have the radio/nav to do it but on the other hand, because its a VAG and not Ford it's illuminated so there's one plus.

That's the serpentine (Auxiliary) belt, not the cam-belt :P It's near the end of its travel I suppose but its most likely a new belt would fix that rather then replacing the tensioner. Do you have any squealing noises? Power steering jerky feeling? "Alternator Workshop" msg? etc? You should also check its the right belt and that its been correctly routed as some garages seem to screw up this simple job!
-
Access the airbag module and just clear the codes - assuming you've replaced everything correctly the light will then go out. Check the controller part number first as vagcom can kill some airbag controllers (there are detailed details on their website)

Bit of an open question, if you are good at diy mechanics then its easy if you arn't then it's hard! I take it it's a diesel? I'll let you use the search function for actual fitting as there are loads of posts on this but in terms of actual work the Galaxy shafts one of the easier car's to change as nothing else (like the sump/gearbox/engine mount) has to come out.
-
Lamp failure, if ones staying lit then you have a failed lamp on that corner of the car - its not just brake lights that it covers so check all the lamps in that cluster.
-
No, I dont know who told you "everything else will work" but it won't. The speed signal and rev counter are a different pulse setup for starters and yes, the auto has the gear select graphic although that's just a line of text at the bottom of the screen and won't show anything without communication from the auto controller.

Shudder During Acceleration From Low Revs
Mirez replied to Nuc's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Shuddering on the 2.3 is normally a coil pack issue, there are two sitting above the plug and each with a flying HT lead to the next cylinder. Its not an obvious failure when they go internally so a swap out is the easiest method of testing. -
Sadly that sounds very much like DMF failure :)
-
HIGHLY unlikely to need the gearbox replacing. If you arn't sure what you are looking for then I guess you could assume the inner stub is part of the output shaft but it would be a silly conclusion to make since its not the case :) Get a second, third and maybe even a forth opinion before you let a garage rip you off.

Dealers Service Prices
Mirez replied to Dick Dastardly's topic in Dealer Service and Reliability (Galaxy)
Write to both motability and the dealer involved. This seems to be quite commonplace for a lot of garages as soon as they know the car is fleet/leased, I has quite a shouting match with my VW dealer when they did my last Golf's first service as I apparently needed new brake pads all around and wipers at 15K miles - when asked to produce the old pads they "could only find the fronts" and they were probably only half worn or so... -
Lol, thanks mate - it's only on rare occasions ;)
-
Yeah they will fit all Mk1 and Mk2 models you'll just need the 6 nuts (as the studs are intregal) which you can grab from a ford/seat/vw dealer unless I can find a set in the "nuts and bolts" box :) No problem with posting them so I guess that will just depend on the cost's - I'll make some enquries with couriers on Monday for you, can you PM me your postcode?

The full bars that run the length of the car - ideal for an upgrade if you dont have them as the holes are all in situ and you just need to remove the grommets and bolt these on. Identical part to the Sharan and Alhambra this is both bars in black. Need them shifted so
-
You can use it for the other modules but not for the engine and that's because its a Ford engine not a VW one - the 2.3 is from the Scorpio (and also used in the transit) so you need a general obd2 tool.
