  1. I'd say stick to a diesel, whatever you do maz. generally lower insurance quotes, they dont depreciate as much and u get better fuel consumption. The engines are much more robust and last much longer than a petrol one does. If you're handing the gal back, i guess they'll get the outstanding balance from him. If this is the case, I'd say make as much money as you can on gal while you have it. :angry2: A very robust car is the mercedes 190E diesel, if you fancy it. Tim-spam's has done more than 300,000 miles in it and still going strong... my dad had a J reg 300D and he sold it with 237000 on the clock!. Whats more is you can run it on chip fat, saving you a
  2. hey mumof4 how come your giving up the gal?
  3. Hi , I have the same problem on 54 plate 115 zetec auto, if I turn ignition off and back on, problem goes, but soon comes back, deff electronic prob, not fuel supply. Can someone please tell me what MAF stand for?, also is there a dummies guied to shorcut letters meanings in this forum ? ( eg. MAF = ) Many thanks, Dave. Hi there Dave, welcome to the forum. I dont know what MAF exactly stands for, but it is also known as the Air Flow Sensor. It simply measures and tells the ecu how much air is going through to the engine. It is located just after the Air Filter box, you should see a wire coming out of it. Click on this and look for Changing the MAF - with pictures. Look at the pictures on this post. However, because your problem resolves after restarting, it is unlikey that the MAF is faulty....sit tight and someone with more knowledge in this topic area should come to the rescue!
  4. i do believe that you got 53 mpg. I can get 210mpg and take a picture of it as well, but thats not the point. It doesn't calculate mpg with miles and gallons, it uses other sensors like the maf to work it out. Hence, if the engine is being laboured, it won't know and cant adjust the mpg accordingly. This is why I'm asking at what engine speed the boost comes in, so that you can really find what the best speed is for the best fuel economy. 6th gear @ 40mph means there is no boost which= more diesel being used. Of course the computer doesn't know that and can't take this into account. This is also part of the reason why "Mikeohope" says "Do not rely on the vehicles computer they often over/under read by up to 15%."
  5. surely this isn't true because at that low a speed the turbo cuts out, making the engine do more work? does anyone know at what engine speed the turbo comes in at?
  6. whats the "burping technique", how many litres did you manage to get in and what was your driving technique?
  7. Dave-G meant Pumpe-D
  8. Aren't the guys in video using the same tdi MK1/2 engine as us? PS , look at how amazed they are at a figure of 50 MPG  B) tut tut I'd really love to do this.
  9. why does the cat matter? only reason I can think of is maybe the lamda sensor would give wrong readings... :(
  10. do the zetecs have a trip computer as standard? standard zetecs dont have climate control. Does this mean that at the top of the B-pillar there are rear heating controls (fan speed+temp control)??
  11. make sure you have your radio code handy if you decide to disconnect the battery!!!!!
  12. I found this article REALLY useful: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html Also, while on this subject, I would like to draw everyone's attention to the "Minimum legal tread depth does not mean "safe"." part of the article. Press PAGE DOWN 13 times, and you should be at the right place (might be different for different resolutions), It could just save your life!
  13. i think you can use vag-com to measure the oil temperature.
  14. just go to frauds and get the trim..........If u buy the seat from them, all they're gunna do is all you all the parts for it! this way u might save yourself removing the whole seat.
  15. i'm sorry, i forgot to mention it's a private seller...so i guess now its a no no! how about this, this one's a dealer: 2000 X Reg FORD Galaxy 1.9 TD Zetec Automatic,Diesel, 52,000 miles ^_^, Metallic Silver, 2 Owners. Alloy wheels, Air conditioning, Climate Control :o , Full service history, Tinted glass. HPI clear, Finance
  16. I'm looking for a new gal and have come across this I called up and, the guy said all the other cars of the same spec are priced at around
  17. Hi there. How much was the seat? was it new or second hand? I was once looking to buy a seat from the dealer and he quoted me
  18. If im sitting in the car and the light turns off, I press unlock on the fob to turn the light back on. When i do this, I can hear a certain "tick", as if there is a relay of some sort controlling the timing of the light from the fuse box area. this supossed "relay" ticks (once) and instantly the light switches on. does the middle light (directly above the middle centre seat) come on at all?
  19. does it "pull" by any chance?
  20. Its good to know that you can read the auto gearbox with it...the mechanic had me worried there! there are two options on this website, which one should i get?
  21. Check that it has the infrared alarm sensors just above the front seatbelt height adjusters, on the b-pillar, with a sort of speaker grille on it) It should be standard on all gals (not LX) but i have a ghia that doesn't have it! Check that the spare wheel holder works properly, there are many stories about it not working properly. Look carefully and try to find Subtle differences of paint colour between different body panels. As many cars now have metallic paint, it is very hard to match the same colour. If you notice a difference, it may have been repainted, and so must have been DAMAGED, maybe crashed into!! Make sure there are bills to back up the service history. These are much harder to fake than the stamp book. Follow it up in chronological order. Check mainly, the drivers door and ignition barrel for signs of damage or repair. If somethings fishy, it may have been broken into!!! Check the numbers etched onto all of the windows. If one doesn't match, then it may have been smashed/broken into at some point! HERES ONE FOR YOU: How can you check that the booster heater is working? I mean, its April at the moment so it'll never get below 10 C...... VAG-COM? what if i dont have it? I dont think the dealer wil be happy about me trying to bypass the temp sensor under the bonnet...  ! So how?
  22. Are these diagrams and procedures fit to use for an mk1 auto oil change? I just went to my local mechanic and he said "my equipment will read everything apart from the automatic gearbox" is this true, even for the VAG-COM software you get off the internet? He also went to say that they check the oil level with the computer and that only they can refill it. Now, i know the second part isn't true, is the first part? Is this where you guys get your VAG-COM from? If so, which one should I get?
  23. Raymac definitley helped :o urm for number 3, do you know what the 8th switch, under presumably, the right hand heated seat switch would be for? I know, Could it be the master switch which controls the rear heating controls on the B-pillar of non climate control cars)? Dave-G thanks for the early reply! 4) What's the plastic one for? does it lock/unlock the car? 5) Does the different cambelt change interval mean that ford realised 60K miles was too much or something??? If so, surely the earlier diesel mk2's should start changing @ 40K rather than the original 60K?
