Brake Pads - How Long Left?
El Dingo replied to Playpen's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Regarding pad thickness, you need to consider the disc thickness as well. The minimum thickness specifications (and allowing for seized pins), are designed to prevent over-extension of the caliper piston. Brand new pads are about 13mm thick? In short, I'd change them now. -
Ha ha ha! Someone was *very* patient to be able to trim that tape without putting knife marks in that soft black paint :16: . ... and very patient to drive from New York to Seattle... Nice car the S4 - I used to own a B5 2.6 V6 Avant as well. But always wanted the S4...

Gooner - that's wonderful news! (Wow, that brings back memories... mind you, you must be *really* old to be a grandpa! )

You sure thats not Blackpool? :D :D Andy. Yes, could be... :D

We need to organise a meet just so we can all see this. Bl**dy impressive!

Things Most Likely To Go Wrong
El Dingo replied to Jimbo73's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
Hello again! Hi Nik - When I say overboosted, I mean just that (not 10, but 9.81  ). The engine in my A4 is basically the same lump as the 1.9 diseasel VAG in many other applications. In the 'Audi A4' version, this engine utilises more turbo boost that I consider comfortable - this engine suffers from pronounced turbo lag, on/off power characteristics and poor fuel consumption and is difficult to drive smoothly. A colleague of mine has the same model, and complains about stalling at junctions, for example. Turbocharged engines will provide more power and torque than non-turbo engines. Diesels have a narrow rev band and poor acceleration rate change (due to a combination of reasons) compared to petrol engines; At lower revs, a 130BHP turbo diesel Galaxy will accelerate better than a normally aspirated 140BHP petrol. At higher revs the reverse is true. A petrol turbo would provide the best of both worlds, although the torque figures for turbo petrol are generally lower compared with the same size turbo diesel engine . You pays yer money and you takes yer choice. Surely nobody would argue which uses less fuel. But I have personally found the A4 disappointing, the fuel-only cost being about 11.2p/mile (compared to two similarly sized petrol cars I've also been using recently, that averaged around 12p/mile fuel-only cost). More fool me, I expected better from the diesel. The long view on this (to which I cheekily alluded) is pollution and carbon emmissions. The pessimistic viewpoint is that petrol and diesel have a limited life and will be taxed to death. The optomistic view is that carbon neutral sources will allow internal combustion engines to continue ad-infinitum, such as Bioethanol and Biodiesel (carbon is locked up the plants that are grown to provide the fuel). The pollution issue for diesels is certainly not over, and EuroIV has already lost it's tax break for company users. Our goverment already penalises diesel in fuel duty (compared to other EU countries) for exactly that reason. You only have to drive behind a diesel Galaxy under hard acceleration to see why...   Good grief, this is much too serious. By the way, I do like the cat, teach. ^_^ -
On my work laptop, when you start up there's a note that says 'press del to enter set-up'. This gets the BIOS menu on screen... at least it works on my machine. (Just an idea.)
-
Good point. Can you get into the BIOS menu, Mof4? Then you can check the 'boot' order, however, it's likely to be CD first (unless Nik proves me wrong about computers AGAIN!!! :D )
-
Wow, just the 63k. TBH, though, I won't deny that's a tasty machine. :D I can just about afford this one, but only if it runs on devil diesel... :D
-
I agree with you on the Range Rover Sport, that and the BMW M5 are the two only cars I actually get slightly envious over when I see them ! They are my two most desirable, first to buy, lottery win, fairly realistic, maybe in the future type cars. One day, arrrhh one day, maybe just maybe...................... :D *snigger*

Things Most Likely To Go Wrong
El Dingo replied to Jimbo73's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
BTW, I can't be bothered to look the figures up, however, I wouldn't bother with combined fuel consumption figures. In my experience the Urban figures represent what most people on average will get out of their cars. I'll agree with that and so apparentlly does El Doggo Dingo :D :D   He he he... Woofy to you teach! -

Commenting on driving style is so patronising it's embarrassing! :D -
Nice to see VR back!

The number plate reads "JACKANORY". :)

If I was buying for me, I'd buy the ST3. :o However, our Galaxy is my wife's car. So if I replaced that, I'd most likely buy an S-Max 2.5.

I am always amazed at the elevator angle those things use. Nice pics Bleeno... I landed the simulator on the carrier deck 6 times out of 7 (3 times at night), with one wave off. Was pleased with that. My son was in the other seat, acting as the weapons man. :(

Wow! I might just do that! 206GTI mmmmmmm. :( I was thinking about what to get. Maybe a Saab 9-3 2.0T or a Honderra Chord 2.4i. Vulva S60 2.0T, but they don't really handle very well. I'd like a Saab 9-5 Bioethanol-ready, but it's over budget. See http://www.carpages.co.uk/saab/saab-95-08-05-05.asp for more information. Any suggestions? (No, I mean about which car to get...)

Dave, you're one sick grunion mate..(room for one more??..you can get first go!?) its phalic...not falic...:D:D I thought it was 'Phallic'. :( -
Took the kids swimming at Coral Reef this afternoon, having slaved long and hard on the Galaxy this morning (just so we could keep T from having to change batteries, you understand). The slides are really spooky and misty in the dark! Scary stuff! :(

Things Most Likely To Go Wrong
El Dingo replied to Jimbo73's topic in Questions about the Ford Galaxy
Well Tim-Spam, you keep going on about facts. I just gave you some facts, however ridiculous they might seem to you. Don't you read the 'papers? Our government is preparing us for peak time road pricing, all in the name of reducing carbon emmissions. If you drive a company car, the amount of tax you pay is calulated based on it's carbon emmissions (also it's OTR list price and whether you are a higher rate tax payer). The diesel particulate issue has been raging for some time now, our government having given a limited time reduction in tax on diesels for Euro IV compliancy, with diesel already loaded due to the particulate pollution. The TDI isn't relaxed - it's just turbocharged, and delivers all it's torque in a narrow power band at low revs. Believe me, my A4 TDi is nearly the same engine as the Galaxy TDi, and if you keep your foot down the fuel consumption really suffers. The ideal (IMHO) would be a lower capacity turbo petrol - an Alhambra 1.8T perhaps? Tim-spam, it sounds like you want to have a race! I don't really care about 0-60 times, or whether I could keep up with a Galaxy TDi. I like driving my petrol engined Galaxy more than my diesel engined Audi because it is quieter, more refined and a smoother drive, and if I want to take off fast I can let it rev it's nuts off. I don't feel comfortable overtaking in my Audi because the power/torque curve is so abrupt (because the damn thing is overboosted IMHO). Shall we take a breath and relax a bit chaps? Big Kev made some good and sensible observations. But it's Gooner who really got it right. :( -
Try this one... http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...wtopic=7262&hl= This gave me some weird symptoms, like ABS warning lights, central locking problems. On VAG-COM it showed as multiple short to B+ (alternator output terminal). Just an idea...

Auto Gearbox Oil Change
El Dingo replied to sanjsanj's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
El Dingo: by 3, do you mean that the speed at which the car moved without pressing the gas (i.e, press brake, select D, let go of brake and don't press anything) was faster? How are you Sanj? With the old oil, the car crept forward on idle more than with the new oil. In other words, without pressing the gas, the car now goes slower.
