Faulty fuel pump ? The only way to stop a diesel is to cut of the fuel. Therefore if the cut-off valve is ok ( or bypassed ) then there must be no power to the fuel pump ( or its knackered ).

Slow in a Diesel to get through the puddle. Fast in a Petrol so you have less distance to push it when it breaks down.

Try running a direct 12v feed from the battery to the fuel cut-off valve. Best to use an inline removable fuse as it will drain the battery overnight.

Yep but it is too warm here at the moment. However as mentioned previously if you disconnect the power to the heater then any smoke must be coming from the engine not the heater.
