Cam Belt Or Timing Chain?
dave_m replied to mumof4's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
If you do it yourself and you do make a mistake then it could and probably will cause major damage to the engine I looked at the possibility of doing the belt myself as i am fairly confident on working on my car in the end I took it to the dealer and if i remember correctly it cost about -
Whats This Mean Then ?!
dave_m replied to paulmpaciorek's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I also get this code from VAG COM i have also noticed if i switch the heater controls to the "thaw my feet out setting" this does not work properly and air does not seem to come out from the footwell vents. So I assume this is what the error code relates to in my case :( -

remove the glove box it is very easy and you will see the switch you can then bridge the switch to see if its the switch or the wiring which is at fault B) -
Ford Dealer.........first Contact.
dave_m replied to zed650's topic in Dealer Service and Reliability (Galaxy)
I tried getting my power loss problem, looked at by a VW garage tried two different dealers one in Milton keynes that said they were only insured/Licenced to work on VW cars and the second in dunstable came up with the excuse that their equipment would not work on the galaxy although th VW senior tech at Dunstable was extremely helpful and gave me some very good advice which combined with the help from people on here eventually helped solve the problem I think both of the above excuses were total BS. -
I get about 620 miles to a full tank, but i have a heavy right foot so probably could get more if I drove it more economically, but life moves too quicklyt I have to drive fast to keep up with it :D One thing i can say is though I haven't noticed a drop in MPG in the cold weather, although i have only just fitted a thermostat as i was without one throughout summer cos of incompetant fraud dealer so it may be that when the weather warms up i'll see more miles to the gallon :D

JB, I haven't actually tested my stat i am just basing that on the Specs of the cooling system on elsawin. i would imagine the actual values vary quite a bit depending on which make/quality of stat used. In practice i shouldn't imagine the coolant temp would ever reach 104' The EPC that specifys the VW thermostat as 87-102 degrees, i think the one i bought from GSF is 88-104 degrees :D

My car is exactly the same as this, The Thermostat will not start open until it reaches about 88 degrees it then is not fully open until about 104 degrees. in this cold weather the engine does not seem to warm up enough (even with the booster running as this only helps to 75 degrees) to let the thermostat open enough to heat the radiator up. I have monitored my coolant temp with VAG COM and when the temp hits about 92 you can just feel the Rad hose that comes from the thermostat housing to the Rad starting to get warm. I think if you had a problem you would definately experience overheating as there must be some cooling otherwise it would be getting hotter and hotter. Your cooling system must be working Ok as with no thermostat fitted the rad is getting warm, which is what was happening to mine when the dealer forgot to refit the thermostat after my head was changed. Maybe You could try covering up the front grill with foil or something similar and taking the car for a drive as if theres no airflow Through the Rad then you will see if the rad is getting hot or not. It is a concern that the rad doesn't seem to get hot, i myself was concerned as all the cars i have had in the past (petrols) seem to be hot within a few minutes!

who mentioned Astra GTE's, brings a tear to my eye I sold mine and bought a sensible car(Galaxy). 16v, Full Leather Interior  -
seriously, you might have a petrol leak, i would check it out if i were you, when you are going at speed the airflow at the front of the car will push the fumes away fron the ventilation intakes.

a lot of the airbags available on ebay and the like are probably stolen, it is quite common these days to wake up in the morning and find that some scumbag has stolen the airbag from your motor, I personally would not buy any item like that off ebay, i mean you wouldn't know what has happened to it during transit etc or where it originates from!

On my mk2 1.9 Tdi the fuel gauge markings don't really correspond to the amount of fuel you have left.

TIS does not say anything about undoing the bleed nipple i never have and have had no problems

I had mine fitted professionally this time due to lack of time to do it myself, but it is a very simple DIY job, wiring is no problem either you can find the wiring details on the internet easily.

a friend of mine has a similar unit to the one above,it also has a light built in and provides 300W of 240v power via a built in inverter i think it is a Ring powerpack 120 the size of it is not too large either quite heavy though due to batteries

you cannot use this to start a car, you have to leave the other car running for a while to trickle charge the battery, but theres no way the cig lighter could supply the amount of power required, the led on the unit comes on supposedly when theres enough voltage in the dead battery to start the car, waste of money and incorrectly described as Jump start.

I used the one for the mondeo etc, it does not fit perfectly but does not look bad at all theres some on ebay click here halfords also do them.
-
no you cannot see the thermostat as it is inside the engine you need to take a part of the cooling system off to see it, another way to know if there is one fitted or whether it is jammed open is to see if the radiator gets warm quickly i.e when the gauge has not yet hit 90. Mine used to start to get warm straight away. The thermostat lets water pass through the radiator once the engine has reached it normal operating temperature, i think the thermostat is set at about 87 degrees.

get it done get the paperwork for your service history, then do it properly yourself its your car you so when you work on it you do your best to make sure its done properly otherwise it ends up costing you money, I have had my car worked on by others and got it back with screws/bolts missing from undertray, battery cover, oily rag tucked between pipes under bonnet. I am just glad i found this forum and am getting to know the workings of my tdi well enouh to be able to start doing work on it myself
