20k Service Extras

A special reservoir is put onto the brake reservoir. A vacuum device worked by compressed air is then attached to each nipple in turn in the correct bleed order, and the fluid is drawn through until the clean fluid comes through. And believe me, even with two years old fluid you can see the difference. -

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, it absorbs water. This water then corrodes the inside of the brake components. Not only can that cause pitting and leaks, particles of corrosion can get into the ABS pump and jam it. Considering the price of ABS pumps, master cylinders, calipers etc, -

Try pressing the lock button on the remote twice in succession. Works with some cars. Ultrasonics can hurt a dogs ears btw..... -
Seating Positions When Travelling

I used the term "crash test" for simplicity only. My father-in-law designs aircraft seats and they use the same facilities to test them in the same way. He designed the new 9g impact seats on the Boeing 777. And having seen the film of some of their tests is scary. Next time your in a charter flight aircraft, feel the bottom of the seat in front, the bit your shins will strike in the event of a rapid deceleration incident. If the plane crashes and catches fire, you won't get out because you will have two broken legs. Newly designed seats don't have the bar, but there is no legislation to retro-fit them. -
In the olden days, when you were a lad, they worked by a contact on the pad earthing out against the disc. Trouble was if the wire broke or was cut they did not work, or if ignored long enough they stopped working as the wire was worn away. Now most cars have a closed loop with the sensor being part of the loop. When the ignition key is first turned the system checks the loop is closed and turns out the light on the dash. When the pads wear the disc cuts through the wire in the sensor breaking the loop. If the loop is broken the light stays on. This means that if a heavy handed mechanic damages the wires into the loom connector when un-plugging the old pads then the light will also stay on. In short there is either a break in the circut or the lamp needs re-setting somehow. Whether this needs a trip to the dealers to do or not, I can not help with!

I bought a pair of front brake disks for a Vauxhall Astra from Hellfrauds over two years ago. They were the ones listed in the applications chart and on their parts computer but on fitting were clearly the wrong size. So I took the time to find the correct size and what other Vauxhalls they were fitted to, and they exchanged them for the right part, no problems there. They even notified head office of the problem. But two years later and the applications chart and PC are still showing the wrong ones..... Also no power steering belt is shown for the same car, yet the same engine/pump is fitted to three other cars in the Vauxhall range and for two of them they stock a belt that fits...... Best bet is to avoid Hellfrauds, except perhaps for screenwash and their own-brand lifetime warranty tools.

lol, problem of the top not getting wiped, buy not trying to wipe the top! Whoever came up with that should go work for Microsoft on tech support or get a job as a physiotherapist! -
1) Keep an eye on eBay they come up on there sometimes, the remote part just plugs onto a normal key. I don't know if the keys are all the same, but the VW and SEAT ones are, so shop around as parts can be cheaper for the same thing at the dealers of the different makes.

Seating Positions When Travelling
Masked Marauder replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hmmm, that would depend on a few other things. If you are facing forwards and get a heavy tail-end then you can get very seriously injured, indeed killed, as the whiplash forces can snap your neck. But getting back to the belts and seats. All vehicles that are mass produced must be crash-tested, this is expensive. You can imagine the cost if they had to do all the tests with every possible seating configuration with the seats facing backwars too. Also, the locking on the seats where they clip into the floor, the front ones, could they come undone if the seat was facing backwards? The anchors are clearly strong enough to take the full loading of a forwards crash as the centre lap belt would be useless otherwise. But as I said, some time ago now, seatbelts are not a legal requirement on a rear or sideways facing seat. -
Uses Oil & Water ?
Masked Marauder replied to delboyt's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
An engine compression test may not show up a minor head breach when it comes to coolant. I speak from personal experience there. It needs the coolant pressure tested. You do this with a (expensive, not DIY) kit that pressurises the coolant, and you then leave it and check for pressure drop. Minor leaks in coolant are a pain to find, if they are internal you will find it hard to see them for obvious reasons! External leaks can be spotted by crusty white deposits round the seeping pipe. Also a failing water pump will lose a little coolant, so check there. If that fails then you need to use a kit that has a fluid you add to the water that glows under ultraviolet light to find the leak. -

Nah, your right, they don't do anything special though, just turn them round. It is a bit strange on takeoff and landing though as the angle of attack of the aircraft makes you lean forwards! -

lol, after I read his post and put my reply up, I read another post where he suggests he tested his GPS unit at an indicated speed of 100mph. Just as well there were no kids involved there then.... ;)  -
The heater will operate if the water in the booster heater heat exchanger is below 85

Seating Positions When Travelling

Why is it when someone feels the need to push a road safety point is it they always bring a child into it? And in any case, there are cars that come with rear-facing seats as standard. And it is a FACT that rear facing seats are safer in a forwards accident. And rear facing seats need no seatbelts, and that's the law. Your not a nanny are you Crimz00? Because on here we are all adults and come to our on decisions about things. -
Were the pad wear indicators built into the pads or separate? If separate then they work by a wire loop in the pad turning the light OUT if the loop is un-broken and the circuit is complete. When the pads wear away the loop contacts the edge of the disk and wears through, the circut is boroken and the light stays on.

If it is a front and a MK1 then you remove the front grille, and then you can see a single screw at the bottom of the indicator lense. http://trevor.dynip.com/gifs/pflhlr1.gif

Cam Belt Changes

There is an inspection port, yes. It is at the gearbox end, on the upper side of the transmission housing. There is a marker on the flywheel that must line up with the marker on the housing. There is no crankshaft locking pin with this engine. No, the PD kit is different. It will set you back about -

There is an easier way to test the stat, run the engine until the needle is up one notch on the gauge and feel the radiator, if it is warm then the stat is stuck open. On a pre-2000.75 TDi Galaxy the thermostat is behind the power-steering pump and a pain to get out. So if you do change the stat then change your coolant too, may as well kill two birds with one stone. As for the booster heater you can check the operation of that by simply looking at it on an icy day, five minutes after you start the engine. If it is working you will see a heat haze coming off it! It is located behind the rear passenger side wheel and can be seen by looking under from the back of the car.
