  1. With some engines you don't get all the oil out when you drain it, the PD VAG TDi engine in the later Galaxy is a good example of this. When initially filling a dry engine you need 300cl more oil than for an oil and filter change. This means that nearly a third of a litre of dirty oil stays in the engine! Also engine wear will be different allowing different levels of contamination into the oil. This is why some people like to change the oil more frequently with an older engine.
  2. It is inside the bonnet clipped to the passenger side of the wiper linkage http://www.bigtrucker.co.uk/images/heaterswitch.jpg A common trick in the winter is to unplug it and put a 10A mini-fuse into the connector, you can see that to the right of the picture. So if we assume they have done something like this to make sure it works after they fixed it, and then forgot to undo it, then that may be the problem.
  3. Well it certainly sounds like the loom connector for the booster heater. Not plugging it in would stop it smoking right enough!
  4. Well done, you managed to get all that said in just one text message!
  5. Nope, it is just that as the forum becomes more and more popular the costs of running it goes up and up. So if everyone who managed to save some money gave a little bit back we can be here the next time they need help....
  6. Well the timer version has a wire for a water pump. If you don't have the timer version this wire is not connected to anything but should have a resistor clipped into it.
  7. LOL, so close it is good enough! Hippo, birdies, two ewes!
  8. Close.... I think one is not actually on, just hanging by it's claws.... :o :43:
  9. Hey, ANOTHER satisfied customer of the DIY garage who has saved a packet! Did you know there is a Pay-Pal donate button at the bottom of the banner at the top of the page!
  10. Does the heater work? If you don't have the timer version one of the wires will be clipped anyway.
  11. Has to be silver then!

  13. Does'nt everyone know you can go ages on the first half tank - - the second half however disappears in next to no time. :o Fuel gauges are notoriously non linear and can easily fool you.... particularly if you like to brim your tank..... :43: Nah, I filled it up when I got there and it took 38 litres. It was not just a guess. I have had more than 48MPG out of it when I have been driving carefully too!
  14. I drove all the way to Perth in Scotland with a full car on half a tank of diesel and it is 400 miles. Which is about 48MPG. And my booster heater was running!
  15. One of these days I am going to write down everything on the list and go over to the breakers at Daventry and clean up!
  16. Can't you tell by the engine? The engine code should be on the timing belt cover at the top. Also does it have a screw on cartridge type oil filter that hangs down at the front or one that sticks up?
  17. Certainly sounds like an induction pipe off.
  18. In both cases it is factory fitted most likely.
  19. The warning light could be a wire grounding to the chassis or something, you really need to fit an independent gauge and see what the pressure is really doing. Something like this is ideal, you can even buy a "T" piece and leave it permanently fitted. 40PSI is fine, below 20PSI and your looking for new parts..... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Oil-Pressure-Gauge-I...5QQcmdZViewItem
  20. There are many many places on the internet that for a small fee will provide you with the code from the serial number. I would note it just in case.
  21. they absorb the light - warm up slightly and re-radiate as infra-red (ps which we can't see so it looks dark) As in light is energy and energy can not be destroyed so it has to go somewhere. I knew about the black re-radiating though, I still remember the cube lesson at physics...... All household radiators would be matt black if we wanted them to really work!
  22. It is the ultraviolet that makes your skin feel hot when the sun hits it. The black film blocks all the UV making it feel cooler.
  23. I think it highly unlikely that a flywheel should need changed at 70K
  24. Then it will most likely be the solid flywheel.
  25. When was the car manufactured/first registered.
