When we had trouble with the immobilser recently (because the chip had fallen out of the key) the starter would not turn, suggesting that it's immobilised by disconnecting the starter -or is there a difference between immobilisers on MK1s and MK2s ? After suffering flooding under the passenger seat it ran O.K. but the engine check warning light came on (it cleared the next day of its own accord). I can't understand why it should do this because the ECU isn't under there on later models, just the C/locking control. Maybe there is a connection in the ECU wiring loom located there ?

Are you confident that the linkage was lubricated properly ? The problem is not usually with the pivot points (perhaps the obvious parts to lubricate) but inside the spindle housing directly below the wiper arm retaining bolt.

I'm pretty sure the powershift grants scheme finished last May. -
I understood that one reason for tyres transmitting a lot of road noise is that UK road surfaces are much coarser than those in Europe where Continental, Uniroyal etc are developed. Avon used to be the only tyres developed in the UK, perhaps they would be quieter? Ivor recently bought some

Real World Shalaxy Mechanical Reliability

Apart from over-soft seats the Xantia was a nice car when it was running well and its aircon system was working fine when sold, despite not being maintained for 7 years - which is more than the Galaxy could manage. leaving aside a Co owned Toyota Camry which was fault free from new, I have owned 3 Japanese Cars all bought at over 3 years old. All provided excellent service to high mileages. Leaving aside consumables I ran a Subaru to 143K which only needed a pair of CV J covers. A Civic went to 157K with replacement CV joint and my current Civic is at 128K and has only had the blower resistor pack replaced . Have I been lucky with these, or do Jap cars continue to be reliable beyond three years? I sincerely hope you -
I agree that respondants to this survey are self selecting, and may well only comprise disgruntled owners. But it should be noted that Mazda, Nissan and Hyundai owners seem less disgruntled than anyone else !

You're quite right, I remember saying that nothing could be worse than the Xantia that preceeded the Galaxy........ -

When I've had binding brakes it's been confined to one wheel, are the fronts equally hot ? does one have more brake dust on than the other ? You would expect the fronts to be hotter than the backs because they do more of the braking. When I found I had a sticking hand brake actuator and was checking the wheels I was suprised how warm the wheels got from relatively gentle braking, so what you have may be normal. Park on level ground out of gear with hand brake off, open the door and lean back against the door pillar, you should be able move the car an inch or two without too much effort if the brakes aren't binding. Ref spongy brakes, use the search button it's been mentioned before.

Subject: FW: Excerpts from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2005...... I realised I was dyslexic when I went to a toga party dressed as a goat. Cats have nine lives. Which makes them ideal for experimentation. The right to bear arms is slightly less ludicrous than the right to arm bears. My dad is Irish and my mum is Iranian, which meant that we spent most of our family holidays in Customs. The dodo died. Then Dodi died, Di died and Dando died... Dido must be sh*tting herself. My parents are from Glasgow which means they're incredibly hard, but I was never smacked as a child ... well maybe one or two grams to get me to sleep at night. Is it fair to say that there'd be less litter in Britain if blind people were given pointed sticks? My mum and dad are Scottish but they moved down to Wolverhampton when I was two, 'cause they wanted me to sound like a tw*t. You have to remember all the trivia that your girlfriend tells you, because eventually you get tested. She'll go: "What's my favourite flower?" And you murmur to yourself: "Sh*t, I wasn't listening.. Self-raising?" The world is a dangerous place; only yesterday I went into Boots and punched someone in the face. I saw that show, 50 Things To Do Before You Die. I would have thought the obvious one was "Shout For Help". I went out with an Irish Catholic. Very frustrating. You can take the Girl out of Cork... Got a phone call today to do a gig at a fire station. Went along. Turned out it was a bloody hoax. Employee of the month is a good example of how somebody can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. Hey - you want to feel really handsome? Go shopping at Asda. It's easy to distract fat people. It's a piece of cake. I enjoy using the comedy technique of self-deprecation - but I'm not very good at it. If you're being chased by a police dog, try not to go through a tunnel, then on to a little seesaw, then jump through a hoop of fire. They're trained for that.

I reckon on the MK2s I see about 20 or more TDIs to every 2.3 and probably 200 TDIs to every V6 and hardly any 1.8Ts. Mark 1s I reckon the mix is more like 50/50 Petrol to Diesel. Not suprising really, I read the other week that more than 1 in 3 new cars is now a Diesel. -
Brake Pad Life...

Well there you go, I've learned something today and it was worth getting up after all.......however the Diesel always felt like it had more engine braking - gear ratios then perhaps or full moon ? -
Brake Pad Life...
Andrew T replied to Lyle Waters's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I thought it was to do with the higher compression ratio.....certainly when I was driving a Petrol and a Diesel regularly on the same roads, I would have to brake in the Petrol where the Diesel just required lifting off. -
The Same question has just appeared in the technical section posted by another member. Odd comments from members have suggested that pad life on Galaxies is particularly good, but otherwise 27K is not unreasonable. As far as the discs go it is possibly the dealer being fussy, since asbestos was removed from brake pads discs have to be replaced far more often than before but I would suggest at least 50K as a reasonable life.

Brake Pad Life...

Covered at least 35,000 on the fronts and they look hardly worn! must be heading for 100K at least. Best I've had before was 50K and that was on a Diesel, which I reckoned was good because of the extra engine braking. I think the pads are particularly thick though, there looks to be more on these after 35K than there is on some when they are new. I also reckon with brake pads you get what you pay for, and a good brand name lasts a lot better than something you've never heard of. -
I think at this point we should be reminded of your previous ruminations on this subject involving a Hamster.

I had this happen - just once a few months ago and never resolved it. I started by bump starting (which suggests it was related to the starter circuit) however that option isn't open with an Auto. Two thoughts occur, is it related to the immobiliser? (which appears to disconnect the starter) when the chip fell out of the key it behaved in exactly this way. Also search the threads for problems with the start inhibitor switch on the shifter which seems prone to giving trouble - or is that the P/N switch you're refering to ?o.
-
Richard if you do a search there was a thread a few months ago regarding an accessory 3-point seat belt. It required a reel to be permanently bolted through the floor behind the middle seat, which may or may not be a problem to you.

Welcome, the 1.8T is a rare beastie indeed, I've only ever noticed a couple on the road and I don't think anyone else on this forum has one. P.s. can you turn the font down a bit please? it's giving me a headache. ;)
