Tdi Throttle Problem
Ivor_E_Tower replied to hampstead's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Usual places to start - check all your brake lights are working; check MAF sensor by disconnecting it and see if that improves matters (under the bonnet and just downstream of the air filter). -
Who's going to pay the congestion charge ? Oh, forgot, the base of the M1 is just outside the charging zone at present

Unfortunately this is common and won't be put right under warranty unless you are exceptionally lucky ! -
5000 Rds Has An Attitude Problem...
Ivor_E_Tower replied to Taliska's topic in I.C.E (In Car Entertainment) Discussion
I think you will find that diesel cats work in a different way to those on petrol engines, and that it will be hard to damage the diesel's cat in such a way that it fails an MOT. As to the radio, sounds (no pun intended) like a software glitch in the radio itself - something for which there is no known cure, unfortunately. Fingers crossed that it doesn't re-occur....... However, I'd try to lower the spare wheel if I were you; better safe than sorry. -
Yes, Tigger is right (giving good advice - that's what Tigers do best). My parents had this problem with their car many years ago (it was garaged overnight but would always be difficult to start first thing), and a new battery fixed the problem immediately.

Trade it in for a TDI :D

Auto Box Slipping
Ivor_E_Tower replied to bigdaddy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
If the revs aren't rising after the box has changed down, doesn't sound like a box or fluid level problem to me. What happens if you just gently increase pressure on the accelerator, rather than kicking it? Will engine speed rise slowly but surely, or is it also reluctant to rev? Could be throttle pot perhaps ? -
Manual Gear Selection Problem

Did you leave the cling-wrap in place :D -
If you search for some recent posts on VAG-COM, you'll find at least one person has managed to activate the trip computer display on a Zetec, so it appears that all the relevant sensors etc are in place. You will need a laptop PC, a link cable and the software to do this - or ask nicely if someone with the kit lives near you and would be prepared to do the work for a small consideration. FWIW I don't have the kit, and I have a Ghia so I have the trip computer as standard; made sure when I was looking to buy used that I only searched for Ghia trim level.

..am sorely tempted to offer

Zetec won't display the trip computer functions unless it's been modified with VAG-COM :D

Can I Fit A Double Din Unit Into A Mk1?
Ivor_E_Tower replied to a topic in I.C.E (In Car Entertainment) Discussion
6000 series are unique size for Fords, about DIN-and-a-half, definitely NOT full double DIN. Wiring plugs may be the same - there is now supposed to be a DIN standard for them, depends on the age of the previous design etc. -
Got a shock on Tuesday - day off and went into a Ford dealer who happened to have a Galaxy in the showroom with the 3-bike tailgate-mounted rack. The price of this item new is now

Nope - I persuaded them to buy a Volvo when I was just 13 years old, and they have had at least one in the family ever since. I learnt to drive on one, and subsequently drove it round most of the Monaco GP circuit, the Le Mans Mulsanne straight a few times over a numebr of years.....even used it to help move house. It now resides on an airfield somewhere awaiting some tlc by its new owner. It's almost as old as me !

Welcome. 2 main areas of concern are (1) dodgy aircon, so make sure you have a warranty that covers repairs, and (2) dodgy auto boxes when coupled to the diesel, so make sure you get a warranty that covers repairs..... Good luck ! Sure you don't want a V70 D5 geartronic instead? My parents recently bought one and I have to say that I find the windscreen pillars are a biger source of blocked vision than of the 850 that preceeded it, and of my Galaxy.

18" off Mondeo

Ah, but depends where in the UK you are. In the over-populated, rip-off land of the South-east, minor service is now getting on for

Interesting ... almost no tread left on tyres though :o Tempting..... but I'll leave it for now Wonder if anyone will do "angel eyes" headlamp units for the Galaxy - now that WOULD be worth bidding for ...... .... not
-
None on eBay earlier in the week when I looked, but I'm not intending to buy just yet anyway (unless some come up at a really good price....). Still unsure about getting the rear bumper sorted - a light covering of dirt and the damage all but disappears !

Luggage Net Aka Versatility Pack
Ivor_E_Tower replied to GT40Graham's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
The net fits to 2 special eyelets that are fitted to the sidepanels. If you do a search, you will find photos of my home-made version - a trailer luggage cover net from a camping store, plus IIRC 4 Carabiners (?) the oval clip-loop thingys also from camping stores, 2 lower ones go onto the lower rearmost seatbelt mounting points (the small rails) and the 2 upper ones I hook through the rearmost seatbelt tongues (when the belts aren't in use). Total cost under -
OIL TYPE USED - TDI ONLY
Ivor_E_Tower replied to jkspoff's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
...on a 2001 TDI 115? Have you spoken to Castrol? They told me NOT to use this; only to be used with revised-spec engines after VW introducted variable-interval servicing. Not sure what damage could be done (if any) by using it though...... -
I've Lost My Pulling Power
Ivor_E_Tower replied to corskey's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
TDIs have loads of torque for climbing hills, you have a problem. Disconnect the MAF by pulling the plug out of the connector, then go for a run. If the car runs better with the MAF disconnected, then you need a new MAF; no charge for dealer diagnostics! Good luck. -
...yes, but looking at the photo, there must be a small tracking error. If no service adjustment is possible, you are left with an option that is almost certainly going to be more expensive that replacing the tyres more frequently that one would like. A minor assembly error in the rear axle, giving incorrect geometry, will cause this wear problem. Better to just accept it and replace the tyres more frequently because if you do order replacemetn parts, what is the guarantee that they will be dead right? How will you measure/check this prior to fitment? ... and if it is also marginally out of tolerance, you will be left with the excessive wear pattern all over again.

Galaxy Tdi 11o Hp D
Ivor_E_Tower replied to joczeze's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
....so almost certainly the compression is OK - and a compression check should be comparatively simple and inexpensive to perform anyway. If you only have trouble in starting the engine when it is cold, it is almost certainly a glowplug problem.
