  1. Yes. This is what the handbrake is for, according to the MOT. It doesn't have to hold the car on a slope, only provide enough deceleration if you have to use it to stop the car in an emergency (eg footbrake failure).
  2. Mine cut in this morning; as it happens I had a package on the floor above it (one seat out at present) and when I picked it up, it was very warm ! The heater sure gives out plenty of heat to the floorpan
  3. (Should I mention this?) I have this problem when using the handbrake to check speed on long downhill inclines ......
  4. Only facelifted models with PD TDI engines require the 505.01 spec oil; VW-badged cars on variable servicing intervals should use 506.01 spec oil, but if you have servicing done annually or every 10,000 miles maximum (rather than taking advantage of the variable servicing intervals) then it is OK to use 505.01
  5. First try unwinding it whilst pulling down on the wheel - then try re-winding it. I've had this problem before when checking spare tyre pressure. All is not lost yet .....
  6. The only problem I have when filling with fuel, is paying; over
  7. Update on costs - had rear bumper repaired yesterday outside my house for
  8. ...could try using waterpump pliers for the larger sizes.
  9. Welcome. 2.3 certainly has chain cam and IIRC the 2.0 does as well. Alternator output should be OK if you add a few electronic items..... Airbag warning lamp is usually (but not always) caused by the so-called clock spring, the sort-of-slip-ring that permits the steering wheel to turn whilst still making electrical connections to the fixed part of the steering column. Probably best to get a diagnostic check done (state where you live, and ask nicely on the forum if anyone has the relevant software and would do it for a few beers!). After-market HIDS has been covered on this forum before, quite recently, with good photos to illustrate the difference.
  10. Chance your arm and try to get the dealer to change it under warranty.
  11. Do check your oil when the car is new; on another website a few months ago, a tale was told of a privately purchased new diesel Mazda MPV. The salesman told the buyer that it was a Japanese Mazda, excellent quality and you won't need to check the oil. Just bring it back for its first service. Needless to say, a few thousand miles later the engine went BANG due to no oil. Purchaser had never checked the oil level so was not covered by warranty. Salesman's talk was dismissed - of course you have to check the oil level, it's in the handbook etc etc. Result was one unhappy private buyer who had to stump up several thousand pounds for a new engine. You have been warned !
  12. Ah yes, badges...... I washed and polished mine today and the rear badge started to disintegrate. It appears to be a nice lump of chromed metal, but the "blue oval" logo is a piece of brittle plastic that is shrunk over the metal. Water gets between the metal and the plastic causing the discolouration, and I suspect that the frost then does its work over the winter; whatever, the plastic on mine has cracked and bits of the logo have now flaked off. Day off on Monday to have the divot in the rear bumper sorted, then it appears to be a drive to the Fraud parts counter ........
  13. Have you tried Sainsburys (e-sure) or Tesco insurance?
  14. It's fallen off, been prized off or else the tailgate has been repaired after an accident and not properly "restored" (I take it you mena no badges at all - there isn't a Zetec badge).
  15. ...because the coolant "system" now includes the cylinders because of the breach in the head gasket.
  16. Yes, I saw something about this earlier today too. So much for cutting greenhouse gasses when we have to produce all the extra electricity to power headlamps in broad daylight !
  17. Sounds like throttle potentiometer, or connector to the throttle pot - anyone know of this model has one fitted?
  18. Not sure that I'd buy anything that has to "work" off that auction site. I was trying to get hold of a cheap laptop for younger daughter, but for anything with a reasonable spec (processor around 1GHz, Win2000 or newer, 10GB or more HDD) people are bidding more than you can pay from proper "second-user professionally reconditioned" sellers with their own internet shops. It's pure madness.
  19. 1. It's a secret (but not that difficult to crack really) 2. near Camberley in Surrey 3. Galaxy Ghia TDI manual; built Oct 2000 but first registered in Jan 2001 4. In 2 weeks' time, I'll have had it 2 years; not had one before 5. I'd have another IF I could afford to buy one brand new; I'm still waiting to get my paws on some money due from an inherritance (this has been dragging on for over 2 years now) and I'll hopefully be looking at the next-gen Galaxy due on-sale in 2006 (alegedly) 6. I've spend a bit on normal servicing and consumables (including tyres, wiper blades etc) and on "modifications" such as home-made load cover (!) etc, but nothing on repairs; warranty repair of aircon system just after I bought the car must have cost Mr Ford almost
  20. Only the Ford has 2.3 litre engine. Try looking in yellow pages under "radiators" - Serck Marston used to do them - don't know of they are still in business. Try a motor factors too (where in the UK are you? Camberley Auto Factors, Bagshot Radiators....)
