  1. So there are another 51 Gooners at least? Well if he goes to a meet hes got 52 rounds to get in at least  I just don't want this publicity / fundraising thing lead to the forum being another Seatcupra.net (i.e subscription) or even Briskoda (full of useless pikey mods and self congratulory posts) or completely overrun with adverts, popup or otherwise. Fundraising needs admin, admin costs money, and this can lead to a viscous circle. And any fundraising needs open accounting. Paying for hosting costs etc is where we should stop IMO. Lets face it, there are only at most a couple hundred active members at any time. Spread over the UK (and Europe) - chances of more than a spurious meet are low. And the average Shalaxy owner is a not obsessed with his car - its not a performance  car or a thing of outstanding beauty. They have families and are not looking to talk in the pub about MAFs or 25 inch wheels or whatever, they want to keep their cars going properly at a reasonable cost in the face of indifferent/incompetent service from dealers. This may well change when the (original) Shalaxy becomes a classic in another 15-20 years time... More important than all this will be provision for MkIII Galaxy/SMAX owners - they need a completely seperate section as we'll get no end of chains changed for cambelts before they realise....
  2. I think you've all lost the point of this forum - it is a FREE, easy to join place where Shalaxy owners can share knowledge and chat about things. The minute it become commercially obsessed then its the end as far as I am concerned.......
  3. My opinion is that the words are very wrong and misleading and may will cause the forum some problems. Technical Support - This is not an official Ford forum, it does not have qualified (Ford) technicians/ engineers/mechanics - my impression from these words is that these people are the experts. The probability is the forum will be inundated with newbies expecting to have their hand held (bear in mind the search is rubbish) And the forum may be held liable for incorrect advice or when people waste money following advice. Suggest you change words to Technical Advice from other enthusiasts or something like that... Discounted Parts and Service - What the hell is this about? Is the forum opening a shop? I'm certainly not willing to endorse Ebay or even GSF/Eurocarparts. I will always say buy original/oem parts, buying aftermarket parts is IMO a waste of money. And what about service? Is MO4 going to do that? Or are we going to get a sponsor? Can anyone really recommend anywhere that gives excellent service thats cheap? My moan is about liabilty and the move toward a commercial base.
  4. Top Gear's irresponsible obsession with speed and acceleration meant, just like with Steve Irwin's lifestyle, a serious accident was likely sooner rather than later. Their "promotion" of dangerous driving techniques (i.e. power slides etc.) is, IMO, a significant factor in the high accident and mortality rate associated with young drivers. We all end up paying for this through higher insurance, higher taxes to pay for the NHS and road speed reduction schemes. I hope he recovers, but I have no respect for any of the Top Gear presenters and producers.
  5. As I child, I suffered terribly from car sickness. Later on in life I realised I was only car sick when my Dad drove. Later still, I think I sussed the reasons. My Dad, and one or two other drivers I have encountered, tended to do constant right/left steering corrections even when driving in a straight line. Couple this with rear weak lateral damping in some cars (notably those with soft or spring leaf suspension), the driver doesn't realise how much he's swinging his rear passengers side to side. Sometimes this motion is circular. Abrupt deceleration/acceleration can also aggravate sickness, especially coupled with turning movements. This all makes sense when you look at the shape and position of the inner ear canal. Sickness is aggravated by speed of course, but the message from this research
  6. What is a Pajero?
  7. Sorry, I would attend but am usually tied up with organising my train number collection diary..... :P What do you thing that Ssangyong owners talk about? How to pronounce the name of their car?......Or how unbelievably beautiful and misunderstood their cars are? :D Do you think Nissan Micra owners are all midgets and meet in a shed at the bottom of someones garden? :D We all know what Pajero is colloquial Spanish for, so I would deny any knowledge of belonging to a club for Pajeros! As for any Montego, Maestro or Metro owners...we all know their club is a cover for psychological counselling sessions..... :19:
  8. It was probably removed at a service and never refitted - It is there mainly for noise reduction. Check you have a full engine undertray fitted, this is important. It protects the engine pulleys from water spray, which can cause momentary loss of power steering... :D
  9. Try a hammer.....
  10. A problem being of course the noise caused by the missing 18 inches.... All Shalaxys diesel and petrol have CATs.
  11. I can confirm the 1Z engine is the predecessor to the AHU and is made by VW. Its the same engine updates to comply with Euro III (1Z was Euro II) and has different fuel injector pump, turbo etc etc. All Shalaxy Mk 1 and Mk2 engines are VAG units.
  12. Your electromagnetic clutch has fallen apart. Likely there was also a shim type spacer in there. Seek professional help......
  13. 1. Change your air filter if its not been changed recently 2. Was the "new" MAF sensor new? i.e. Is it the correct type bought from a dealer or did you buy off Ebay  - that could be a "cleaned up" old MAF that is still duff. 3. Change your vacuum hoses - dont look at them.
  14. Buy an iPod...
  15. Below is pic of my Mk1 MAF (90bhp AHU diesel, 1998) And there I was thinking surely they dont have different airboxes for other engines!
  16. Must get some new glasses  ;) I think they must be posidrive screws....... ;) TIP: When taking close up photos with your digicam - select macro mode - on canon cameras this is the meaning of the "tulip" symbol. The zoom should be set to "wide" (zoom out). This allows the camera to focus sharply when close. No macro mode? Take the picture from a distance so the image is sharp and "crop" the image on your PC.
  17. ;) Just looked at a new Seat Toledo Tdi - Yes!! Self tapping screws!!! What carp!!! My first Alhambra (1Z engine, 96) had a metal bodied MAF, then it in 98 changed to plastic. VAG diesels held together with self tappers? Forget any idea about SK buying one of those......... Those posidrive self tappers have evidently been overtightened, stripping the plastic. The MAF will fall out without the O ring. All in all a lot of damge by your service people.
  18. Have they changed the design ??? On mine (a Mk 1) the MAF housing are held by 2 allen (hex) head bolts (M5 I think). The "nuts" are metal nutserts in the airbox pipe flange. The "bolts" have a spring washer which stops them coming undone. Are you sure these are torx screws? That must make screwing up the bottom one from the rear difficult. Or has someone fitted the wrong screws.... Take some close up pics and let us have a gander.
  19. btw they are bolts....not screws May I make the following observations? (Ignore them if u want but I think I would ask myself how this situation arose...) 1. You dont remove the MAF for servicing. Even for changing the air filter. 2. That back clip, once fitted correctly will never come off by itself. 3. Anyone who says bolts that are crossthreaded can come loose is not a very good mechanic. (IMO it would be impossible to crossthread the correct bolt in the MAF flangemount anyway) 4. The O ring may still be in the airbox pipe end, it tends to stay in there when the maf is removed - check. Its impossible for the O ring to fall out/disappear unless either the bolts fall out too or it wasn't there in the first place.
  20. I am confused ;) You said the MAF was loose at the clip end (pipe) - now you're talking about the airbox end with the 2 Allen head bolts? BTW the bolts would be impossibly tight if they were crossthreaded. And yes, you need to check that O ring is there if it is the air box end.... And the two bolts should never come undone on their own - has someone fitted some wrong bolts? Or have you fitted them from the front? They fit from the back you know (see pic below) Sounds as if I need to post some more pics....tomorrow..... :P
  21. The gap at the back? It wont damage the MAF but.....air is going unfiltered into the engine which is not good...... and as the air is not going via the MAF you will get the sysmptoms of a duff MAF. Use a large pair of pliers or pipe pliers to squeeze the clip ends together and slide the clip down the corrugated pipe 4 or 5 cm. Then push the pipe firmly back onto the MAF housing (about 2 - 3cm). Finally use those pliers again to pull the clip back onto the pipe/MAF joint. It only takes a few seconds to do but you do need big pliers and a bit of strength/dexterity.
  22. Mk1 TDI (-2001) don't have an electric fuel pump, it relies on the distributor pump to "suck" the fuel. MkII PD (2001+) have an electric fuel pump to supply the PD injectors (at low pressure). IIRC the pump is located in the fuel tank (immersed) as in the petrol models. The "hissing/whirring" sound will be heard briefly as you turn on the ignition as it primes the system.
  23. They should be replaced - most dealers do this but a few don't - It always pays to check in detail what work is to be done - don't be afraid to ask or query....you're the customer. :25:
