Crunching Into 2nd & 3rd Gear On Change Up
Jeff115 replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi Jonathan, I do not think that ATF is the oil spec. per the manual and in my case I fear that replacement of the gear oil with ATF will invalidate the Ford warranty (which I think is 3 years?) Otherwise i'd have no qualms about a refill with ATF as several reliable sources have recommended it. Re - in my case I get a clunk into second and scrunch into third ONLY on the way up though the gears. I would have thought that worn synchro/baulk rings would be more apparent on the way down the gears? have you actually checked that the level is correct? Later, Jeff. -
Me too, any ideas on the best laptop interface i.e. serial, parallel or USB? Regarding the booster heater - mine has not work for a year and I recall that before it died I was getting lots of smoke :o Recently I've checked the glow plug which can glow when out of the unit and I found and checked the air temperature sensor (thanks, Mike, I did find it attached to the wiper cables and fixed arm roughly in line with the battery) by checking the resisance through the sensor (while it was in the freezer  ) and by bypassing the sensor with a wire across the terminals. So still no jet turbine noise to my welcoming ears and could certainly do with the unit during this cold snap. So my suspect now is the metering pump but I'll get a VAG-COM before I look to replace it. Questions: Is there a way to check the metering pump when the unit is not working or has anyone tried this? I wonder why your unit is still attempting to start, Ivor - I would have thought that the ECU would disable on 3 or 5 failed starts? What flame are you talking about here, Mike - I thought that it worked on pressure after initial assistance from glow plug? ATB, Jeff.

Hi DubDriver and welcome to the forum, Unfortunately I can only empathise with your problems: Your first visit to the original dealer seemed to have sorted the problem, albeit temporarily, which seems to suggest a faulty seal in cluthch hydraulic circuit. Subsequent visits to other dealers who: ;) replaced clutch and flywheel under warranty  installed a new gearbox seem to have been a total waste of money and your time, as you suggest. However it seems crazy that a complete replacement of clutch, flywheel and gearbox has not sorted the problem unless it's something simple such as an air leak at the master cylinder? This would not surprise me as some 'technicians' cannot think out of the box and unless the diagnostic software tells them the prolem they: ;) refuse to ackknowledge it  go to extreme measures, at other's expense, to overkill when an old-time mechanic would analyse the symptoms. My own experience of an ABS fault on a previous VW Passat demonstrated this for me. Anyway, back to the empathy ;) I've a gearbox problem also. Mine clunks into second and scrunches into third if the revs are anything but low. A refill with ATF could fix but as the problem has got worse then componet wear is suggested which to me is crazy on a 25K miles gearbox. ATF fill will also invalidate Ford liability. I'm delighted to see your mention of

Excellent Mike, I'll check the booster heater temp sensor at the week-end - this has to be the culprit. But I'll probably need access to VAG-com to reset the ECU. Unfortunately I'm on the other side of the pond, outside Dublin, and the Galaxy does not do water, yet  Thanks a lot for the offer of help, Regards, Jeff.

Crunching Into 2nd & 3rd Gear On Change Up
Jeff115 replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Is'nt it good when your search gets a match on your symptoms. any update on this, Jonathan? I've a similar problem however mines only got 25k  I get a clunk when going up into second and an occasional scrunch going into third. This happens only when the engine/box is warm and when revs are higher (approx. 2k) so I can avoid it. However I'm anxious to get it sorted as car is approaching 3 yoa - there is a 3 year warranty on the gearbox, is'nt there? :( Anyway, I'm going to refill with gear oil / check level when I can arrange it. A mate has suggested ATF which would help with synchro / baluk ring wear but may invalidate warranty. Regrds, Jeff. -
I'm glad to see that this topic is still doing the rounds in various flavours :) as my bbooster oo action for 6m and I'm only investigating it now  Thanks for the effort and excellent info. GSMGuy, unfortunately the glow plug is not the culprit in my case. So I'll try a couple of questions out for your assistance again: Does anyone know where the air temperature sensor is located? I believe it should be at the front, behind the bulkhead/bumper area. Can anyone confirm that the Galaxy Zetec booster heater i.e. non-climate control, is not controlled by the ECU? This would mean that ECU does not disable firing after 3 unsuccessful starting attempts. I'm told that the booster in mine is a more basic model - unfortunately this has not helped me to fix it :( Regards, Jeff.

Aux Heater ? And Other Noises
Jeff115 replied to Jeff115's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Pipped at the 'post' literally by you, grifjl  I was just about to post that if both parameter have been exceeded i.e. outside temp < 5 degrees and coolant temp. < 85 degrees for the booster heater to switch on, then your booster heater may have kicked in again, Ivor. Assuming that the outside temp. was still < 5 degrees then the only variable was the coolant temp. which again went temporarily < 85 degrees? I find that sometimes when I switch on the Auxillary heater the booster heater also then kicks in again (must affect the coolant temp.) However after all that I also find myself in a similar status to gazza007 - I haven't noticed it at all recently. I feel a call to 'oh expensive one' coming on... Later, J. -
How did you dry the foam underlay after your leak? Did the biz., thanks, SA, used Super-Glue (per DAVE-G), 2-inch square of carpet tape around the joint and then a couple of small cable connectors to secure. Says to myself 'that's grand - carpet is not wet' then lifted the foam underlay to discover a soggy, smelly mess  Have tried cotton towels (not hers best!) to some success but obviously need to air the underlay properly. Now you probably going to say ' lift the carpet etc.' I should have know... Appreciate it, J.

The 'consultant' aka 'oh expensive one' tells me that this is symptomatic of a condition called 'gear block' which can be remedied by attempting to put gear into first or second gear rather than neutral and de-clutch. Apparently this knocks the gear train into line and reverse can then be engaged and believe it or not, it works  But it's hardly what you'd expect of a precision unit? Later, J.

Aux Heater ? And Other Noises
Jeff115 replied to Jeff115's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Sorry to revive this well-discussed old chestnut but am looking for the fuse number and position for the Booster / Supplementary Heater - I recall that someone advised disconnetion by this means. On a pleasant and still morning it's like the 'arrival of the Daleks' with all the vapour from the Booster Heater exhaust and the smell of un-burnt fuel brings many a nasty glare from pedestrians! Later, J. -
What Changes Would You Make To Your Galaxy ?
Jeff115 replied to a topic in What thing irritate you about your Galaxy
Not sure that I agree with your suggestions there, Dave, I'm happy with the layout and comfort in the rear esp. compared to peers which are not dampened i.e. if I wanted a bus or a van then I would not have bought a Galaxy. As for length - if you want to lengthen then you're going to increase weight => have you driven a gutless (agricultural) Grand Voyager lately? The Aux Heater may be a noisy, smelly unit but it does the job! As for storage etc. - BUY a BUS :D I'd definitely go with Boggler on the 2.5tdi / 150 bhp - yes please. Am waiting to see what the mooted BMW MPV will be like, Later, Jeff. P.S. a thicker paint skin would also be appreciated  -
Aux Heater ? And Other Noises
Jeff115 replied to Jeff115's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi RW, No - definitely no clicking noises from the aux heater fuel pump. The heater is firing up regularly now. Let me see if I have the workings of this unit right - essentially because the PD engine runs quite cool then when the ambient temperature is less than 5 degrees (10 per manual?) and the coolant temp is less than 75 degrees the aux heater fires up to heat the coolant. Coolant is pumped by a seperate water pump to the aux heater and back (to the heater matrix?) so that the cab can get warm air through the blowers. An aux fuel pump (suspect clicking noise source) sucks diesel from a seperate feed off the tank into a combustion chamber which is fired by a glow plug? Exhaust gases (Esso blue smell) are emitted by seperate exhaust. So what's the turbine noise anyone? :D Apart from my misgivings the unit actually seems to work well - definitely a lot cosier first thing a.m. than my previous Passat and a lot more than previous Vauxhall Cavalier!!! Later, J. -
Hi Ivor, Problem only when box is cold i.e. first thing a.m. when trying to reverse out of driveway. This led me to think of oil and lubrication as adjustment the same whether cold or hot. Anyway, has not been a major issue recently so leave well enough alone, Later, J.

Passenger Airbag Deactivation!
Jeff115 replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi Fred, I had arranged to have front passanger airbag deactivated on previous car, a Passat, by VW but cancelled as we decided we could manage with one car which did not have this safety feature. VW were going to do it but wanted me to sign disclaimer, which is fair enough. Later, J. -
Hi Mike, If it sounds like a jet turbine, kicks in on cold mornings, emanates from underneath the second row, passenger-side, and gives a smell like 'parrafin heater in her kitchen that ran off Esso Blue' then my similar queries were addressed by the lads here http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/Forum/index.p...t=ST&f=62&t=879 otherwise TURN the stereo UP VERY LOUD ;) Jeff.

I agree - you need to wash the blades. Sub-topic (sorry Gav!) anyone else notice that blades are oriented incorrectly for RHD i.e. passenger leads and driver's blade follows? J.

How Do You Protect Your Door Edges?
Jeff115 replied to Jeff115's topic in Customising your Ford Galaxy
No lads, The kids don't open the doors :) (he's 3yoa and she's only 9m), though he did open his M & P seat belt on the motorway t'other day (first and LAST time!!!). :) So it must be Herself !!! :) Anyway, I wanted to know if anyone has used the slimline protectors which go the full height of the door and the effect on the inner rubber door seal? btw has anyone seen Oyster Silver in the touch-up paint (small bottle)? J. -
We have an 02 Focus Zetec 1.6. From time to time it seems reluctant to go into reverse. Has anyone else experienced this? If so have you tried replacing the gearbox oil with full synthetic to avoid? J.
-
only have the Gal. a couple of months and I notice some chips on the rear door edges :) I have'nt fitted door trims along the edge as the rubber door seals would be stretched with the additional width - is this making sense? :) How does anyone protect the edges from walls etc. esp. with small children who do not understand that delicate paintwork always comes of worst when knocked against brickwork? J :)

Aux Heater ? And Other Noises
Jeff115 replied to Jeff115's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Yes, the aux. heater on my gal. has cut in during the afternoons too when temp. was easily 12-15 degrees. However the car was parked in the shade - where's the outside temperature sensor? RW - from your previous post... -
Aux Heater ? And Other Noises
Jeff115 replied to Jeff115's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Hi James, We're just back from a short break in the 'sunny south east' (of Ireland) and neither the weather nor the Galaxy disappointed... The sweet little 115 tdi is great for tacking along @ 60-70 mph with loads in reserve when the need (or the inkling) for more arises. I recently took two U.S. colleagues on a business trip to Belfast - they would not believe that the Gal. only had a 1900cc engine  Sure why would you bother with a petrol? Later, J. -

Hi folks, Thanks a lot for the info. regarding the Aux. Heater. Must check it out further except that it has not kicked in over the last few days - is'nt this weather marvellous, for October? Later, J.
