  1. Thought it was quite clear  Probably best not to dabble unless you feel confident to do so and have a "ghost restore" standing by JIC! However, if you want to try com port re-assignments (and don't blame me if you knacker anything ;-)) then here goes:- (Assuming XPpro and sevice pack 2 - havent tried anything else) Click "start" then "settings -> control panel" scroll down and click "system" click the "hardware" tab click the "device manager" tab scroll down to find "Ports (COM & LPT)" click the + by it to expand the list find the port added (exact name may depend on interface cable type I think) if it is already in the range 1 to 4 then the problem is elsewhere (cable type or other connection issue?) if the port is set to a number greater than 4 then proceed click it to open a dialog box with the port properties click the "port settings" tab at the top click the "advanced" tab at the bottom click the drop down arrow at the bottom next to "Com port number" see if any in the range 1 to 4 are not marked "used" if so, select one of them (generally 3 or 4 is a good idea) if 1 to 4 are already marked "used" then don't worry. Try forcing it to use 3 or 4 anyway there MAY be a conflict with something else in your system so when you've successfully made your vag-com connection and done your diagnostics you probably ought to "restore defaults" to the way it was (but you'll have to do it every time you want to run vag-com) happy twiddling, and its not my fault if you bust the thing :19: John
  2. Just finished the full scan. Bit of a relief. Everything checks out except aux heater glowplug reported as open circuit twice. Also an intermittent on the interior monitoring sensors which I'm not fussed about. I've cleared the faults down and will check them again in a few days to see if they are old ones. If not, I'll have to investigate the aux heater and change the glowplug. Oh...and BTW, it doesn't seem to know that the shaft has snapped on my aircon compressor ;-) Guess they don't have a flow sensor in the refrigerant line! John
  3. I have just been fighting for several hours to get Vag-com connected to my Gal. I originally suceeded, but then went on messing about trying out PCMSCAN and Digimoto. When I came back to Vag-com (and after having purchased a registration) I could not get it to connect. I un-installed and then re-installed the USB and USB-serial drivers, but the problem was that I could not get it to configure to a com port within range of the Vag-com software. If you go into "options" "test" on Vag-com (409.1) you only have com port options of 1 to 4. On my laptop (Acer 1415 with XPpro) I messed about for ages trying to get the drivers to install using a com port other than 5 or 7. I unistalled all bluetooth drivers and generally messed up the system good and proper. Eventually, I went on-line and did a search for XP and com-port assignments. XP generally handles these automatically. However, if you go into "System" in the "Control Panel", then click on "hardware" and "device manager" you can find the com port that you have added in the "ports" section. The port used is in brackets. In my case on the last attempt this was 5. If you double click it, you get a dialog box with 4 tabs acrossthe top. Click on "port settings". Don't mess anything up in here, but click on the "advanced" button at the bottom. Now at the bottom you get a drop down arrow with a list of ports! Some of these will say (used) after them. If you are lucky, you will find one in the range 1 to 4 than is not used. Select it. In my case, ports 1 to 4 all said used. I selected port 3 regardless. I backed out then and checked in device manager again. Disconcertingly, the bracket after the com port under the "ports" heading still said (5). I went back in though, and it was indeed changed to 3. I backed out, connected up Vag-com, ran test, found com3 worked fine and saved setup. At the moment, I've got the laptop in the car running a full autoscan (45 mins!). No faults found so far! Hope this saves someone else a few hours!! John
  4. :19: he's allowed , he's only 4 yrs old ;) :25: Ooohh below the belt! Anyway, besides being lots of other intersting things it looks like OASIS is summat to leave alone. John (op)
  5. It could have just been a bit of swarf or grit in the fluid. Its pretty much like the washer in an old bicycle pump....If you push it very slowly there isnt enough pressure to expand the seal out. I had an old Marina like that once... if you rested your foot on the brake gently, you could take it all the way to the floor! If you operated it with normal braking force it worked fine. On that one, it turned out to be a worn cylinder. the bore had become grooved. Swarf trapped in the seal could give the same symptom? I would have liked to have put the old fluid through a coffee filter just for a look see.
  6. Looking at that possibly yes. Mine has got an extra box of tricks with it. So PC to Box, Box to ODBII Connector. I just bit the bullet and forket out 99 dollars to register the Vagcom. Will try it tomorrow and report back. The cable isnt totally "dumb"...there is a pcb in the housing of the 1962 connector....could just be opto-isolation I suppose.... It does say its protected against the oem radio short problem. In any case, I think the vagcom stuff gives you more functionality than the pure ODBII based ones, albeit not presented in such a nice way and more difficult to interpret. John
  7. I got my cable this morning:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1 Finally got it working with Vagcom 409.1 (but only scans 01:engine and 03:ABS)?? Is this all you get for free?? I downloaded the PCMSCAN demo, and tried all the connection options without success. I'm waiting for them to get back to me. In the meantime, I'll see about a digimoto demo.... Cheers, John Hmmm...digimoto lite couldn't connect either. Is there some in-compatibility somewhere? Is this cable only good for vagcom?

  9. Most of the TIS CD is easy enough to get around and understand. What is OASIS though? Anyone care to offer some insight? Thanks, John
  10. Cheers gooner. Will check em out when I've got some dosh to do it! John
  11. I can't remember owning any other vehicle which suffered so badly from this. On mine, its not just the stone chips but stone dents! I think its a combination of the high angle of attack and an over economy by Ford on the metal gauge. John
  12. According to the TIS, the charge (for cars without rear aircon) should be 700(+50)grms of 134a and 200 millilitres of the refrigerant oil. :D It sounds to me as if your compressor must have been undercharged with oil! (dodgy!!) John Sorry, duff gen....The oil qty I gave was for the FS10 compressor...the Sanden is 135 mls John

  14. I reckon you're right. I hadn't investigated yet, but just assumed from the 2 separate temperature controls on the climate control. No, there are no roof vents. As far as recharging it goes, surely if the system is fully evacuated using vacuum, then you just need to put back the specified full charge don't you? Although granted, if you use the Halfords tins the big ones are 540 grms so tricky to gauge 1 and a 1/2. If thats all there is to think about then I'll be keeping my eyes peeled over the next few months for a compressor off a wreck. I don't consider it worth spending nearly 300 quid for a rebuilt one! My first car only cost half of that (an HB Viva)! John
  15. OK. Just bought a nice Gal (see sig) on the cheap. Couple of faults mostly sorted. Sanden air con compressor has sheared shaft (I reckon) as the hub spins very freely (even with little finger). Gas pressure is fine (at the top of the green area on the halfords gauge) so there are no leaks. If I can find a pump at the breakers over the next few months (I've rung a few, they don't have any at the moment but would typically be
  16. Well the complete package from DigiMoto was only $149.95 Digimoto 4.03 with the DigiScan 3200 interface (multi-protocol solution + CAN) for $149.95. So thats about
  17. Hmmm...I decided not to go with the full Rosstech offering at the moment (saving up for new aircon compressor:-(). I've got a USB KKL cable on ebay....now whats the most functional shareware? How does the Digimoto Lite compare with the Vagcom 409? Or is there something better for less than 100 quid (say)?? Any help appreciated, John
  18. I'm looking to get the Rosstech key-usb kit....but how come on the website it makes no mention anywhere of Ford compatibility?..........Are there any subtle differences in the coding on a Galaxy that you need to be aware of....or are all the fault codes and diagnostics 100% compatible with VW and Audi? Thanks, John
  19. When I just traded my 406 for the Galaxy I had to clean it. I finally found out what the bad smell was! The little darlings had stuffed apple cores and banana skins down the wallets behind the seats....it had rotted to a slimy stinking mess!
  20. Check your air con works. I just bought a 95k miler, 4yrs old. The service history is fully stamped up by the same garage from new, up until only 3k miles ago so I figured aircon would be ok. WRONG, air con not covered in standard service, its a separate one apparently. Yep, snapped compressor shaft! I'm going to wait for the spring and keep an eye on the breakers for one!
  21. No you don't. Except that I generally drive to the alps mid-feb fro a week, and also try to find snow in the scottish highlands when it happens. I've caught bad weather in Chamonix in my old 406 estate with summer tyres and would not recommend it. If the Nokians all weather tyres don't fare too badly in summer conditions, at 69 quid a pop I thought they might be worth considering. John
  22. Eurrghhh....you not got them toilet trained yet??
