  1. This is absolutely right. Some engines, like the old 1.8T VAG engine I had in the Leon are designed to run on 98 octane. The 2.3 Gal engine is designed for 95 octane, so will not benefit from using 98 octane. Unless anyone knows any better? Who can quantify what benefit Ultimate Diesel has though? Cetane ratings? I understand that my Audi engine management limits boost pressure in the turbo via the variable vane angle. So even if the fuel burns more efficiently, the power output is 'restricted'. Ultimate does give me another 2 - 3 mpg (this car averages 42mpg) so at less than maximum boost I'm getting some benefit. Discuss!!!
  2. It sounds as though your cabin filter is blocked.
  3. Forget anything except standard 95 octane on the 2.3 Galaxy. It won't do anything, IMHO, except cost you more. My A4 diesel does 'seem' to run slightly smoother on Ultimate Diesel, but the fuel saving simply doesn't justify the 8p per litre premium. It runs well enough on any other forecourt diesel (apart from the horrible smell, clouds of carcinogenic smoke, noise and annoying power delivery and torque characteristics). I used to run a Seat Cupra R on Shell Optimax (98+ octane), and this really delivered! BP Ultimate didn't work as well on this car (97 octane). This engine was designed for 98 octane, so hardly suprising.

  5. To avoid wind noise, make sure that the rear of the door sticks out slightly (maybe a mm) beyond the following door or panel. If the doors are flush to each other you can get noise.
  6. Woah!!! Sounds like auto box recon time! However, it might be worth checking the gearbox oil level first. Instructions can be found in the FAQ, but you'll need a way of measuring the oil temperature.
  7. Good advice - this is an excellent indicator of wear, and proof of how tolerant these chains can be.

  9. Try the new TomTom 910 - then you won't need a separate hands-free 'phone kit - and you get MP3 toys.
  10. T has changed her name.... Hmmm. Fun? In a Mazda?????? Zoom-Zoom??????????? I saw 'Sunshine' yesterday. Very good film, if a little 'wierd' at the end. Mind you, Einstein did predict that strange things would happen to space/time close to extreme gravity sources - but as the Sun is somewhat below the Chandrasakhar limit (i.e. no where near big enough to go supernova, let alone form a black hole) this bit of the film does seem a little far-fetched.
  11. Yes, do both fans kick in if the engine temperature is too high?
  12. Regular oil changes will help to keep the timing chain in good condition. Change the oil more often if your Gal is used for a lot of short journeys, especially in cold weather, where the engine never really gets to warm up.
  13. Ah, Horncastle. Yes, been there, sold the machinery...
  14. IIRC pressure switch will also cut off due to high pressure. These switches can also go faulty. Maybe the system starts up then the pressure switch cuts it out again?
  15. And I bet you forgot the milk. :D Was the bumper damaged, or is that a silly question? :D
  16. Off topic. You may be dying of boredom, but I love the avatar... :D
  17. The noise is almost certainly, as Andrew T says, the coolant run-on pump. Whenever the ignition is turned on then off again this pump will run on for a while, circulating coolant around the engine/heater matrix and (if you have one) the rear cabin auxilliary heater. This won't normally drain the battery, so this probably isn't the cause of the problem. Can someone unplug the tipsy one, please? <_< Tipsy definitely causes battery drain. Or something drain. Or something?
  18. This BSE thing is a bit off topic, don't you think? Why not start a new thread titled 'Vegitarianism and links to CJD' so I can ignore it? :P
  19. Gentlemen, have a look at these... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/56456.stm http://www.nationalcenter.org/NPA203.html http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/20...rs-warming.html There is also plenty of (theoretical) evidence that greenhouse gases are to blame...
  20. Relative to the observer. As for where I'm going to be in five minutes, you'll just have to guess. ;)
  21. My other car is a diesel. ;)
  22. Time is also a coordinate - you can't fix the position of anything in only three dimensions. Think you can? Well, I was over there five minutes ago...
  23. The new James Bond (Casino Royale). Good stuff I hope they consider turning Charlie Higson's books into films - Young Bond - these would be excellent rivals to the Harry Potter films.
  24. T, I'm so sorry to hear that. Hope she gets better...
