You need to remove the headrests fromt the back seats to fold them properly forward. They will then be upright and not fall back down. Gordon.

Mine have worn in exactly the same way in only 8000 miles. I mentioned it at the tyre place I use in case it was to do with alignment. He didnt seem too surprised at the wear, he blamed it on the weight of the vehicle, power steering, relatively wide tyres, and in my case short local journeys. I'm convinced it doesnt help that I do a 180degrees turn on full lock to get onto the drive.... plus my Audi 80 seemed to wear tyres in a similar way... maybe its a VW suspension set up type thing.... How Easy Is Vagcom To Use
Rallim replied to marinabrid's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
If you register the shareware version it will do most things, mine was able to clear the aux faults, and test the blower and pump. The shareware cost is 99dollars, which does get you software support but not hardware. I have also enabled the trailor lights warning indication and single door unlocking with it as well. Also when you register it you can use the measurement tracing. Gordon -
Front End Knocking Noises
Rallim replied to rushy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
It would be wise to double check the drop links, I went round exactly the same loop on my Audi 80, changed drop links - all ok for a while, then knocking noise again. I didnt even consider the drop links again - changed ball joints, strut-top mounts, wishbone mounts (actually changed the wishbones as I bent the original getting the mounts out - doh!) - then in last minute frustration I had it back on the ramps, busy pulling at the suspension etc etc , and 'click' - I had pulled on the drop link - it was knackered - <6months old . Beware the 'top mounts', when jacked up they are resting on the top cup and not in the 'crown' of the suspension and therefore may well move. Gordon -
For the mk2 at least you do need VAG-COM to enable the symbol. I have done it to my 2001 TDi, so I don't know the applicability to the 2.8. Here is the topic with the info... hope its of some use Gordon

Electric 'pop Out' Windows.
Rallim replied to VeeDub Nutter's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
aaaahh yes, the mk1 dash layout is coming back to me, my mind went blank even though I did look at a number of mk1 galaxy / sharan's before buying mine. The mk2 is on the centre console next to the gearstick. I've just checked ekta and the centre console cover with the switch cutouts is ~ -

Oh B), I'll put aside my 'mk1 wiring loom envy' and be more positive. Just need to find a decent breakers... Where are the switches for the mk1 located, on the centre console next to the gearstick? Gordon. -
Cam Belt Or Timing Chain?
Rallim replied to mumof4's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I dont know much B), but the 1.9 TDI definiteley has a timing belt, not a timing chain. Do a search on 'cambelt' (using any date for the time frame) and you will find many threads! Gordon. -
Electric 'pop Out' Windows.
Rallim replied to VeeDub Nutter's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Ooohh, I got all excited there, thought I could do that, I would like to have electrically operated flappy window things at the back.... so with eagerness I braved the dark raind and cold and prized a look underneath the rear pillar, but it would appear unlike the mk1 the mk2's do not have the wiring connectors as standard B) bummer, but then it should be of little surprise as it was the same for... fog lamps... tow bar electrics.... cruise control... I'm sure the job must be possible to retrofit to a Mk2 Shalaxy but it requires a bit more work running wires.... Gordon. -
Harumph! After successful re-enabling of my aux heater in October (and noticing straight off how much difference it makes when it works). I get a phone call from the wife this morning saying the car was enveloped in smoke, and much to her and her friends amusement they had a tap on the window (a hand appeared through the fog! ) by guy from a nearby office asking if the car was on fire and were they allright. Apparently it continued throughout the day, and it was very 'embarrassing' in traffic. Going by the rest of this thread I think I will have to bite the bullet and buy and new glow plug and give it a good clean out... nice time of year, I should have been proactive! :D It had been working so well..... Slight Steering Wobble At Slow Speeds
Rallim replied to Rallim's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I managed to grab some free minutes and jack the car up this weekend, I pulled and yanked the wheels around but they seemed solid as a rock. I decided as a 'quick' try to swap the front wheels with the back and see if it made any difference. Lo and behold the wobble has gone! :D I am convinced that the wobble was present when I changed the front tyres last year, maybe the wheel is out of shape, when I get chance I will head down to my local tyre place and get them checked. Its also worth noting that I had put Goodyear 'Eagle' (205/60 R15's) tyres on the front, the ones on the back were Continental Contact Sports (same size) which looked like they had been on the car at least 2years. After swapping these to the front they have noticeably more grip than the Goodyears, I know the Goodyears Eagles are the low end of the product range but I did not expect such a noticeable difference. When I first got mine the front cup holders did not even open due to all the spilt coffee / coke. They took a considerable amount of cleaning / WD40 before they 'sprang' back to life (this was after the garage had 'cleaned' the car - twice!). Occasionally I use them for drinks but I use them mainly for my PDA mount. Gordon.

From what I understand from other posts, and it does seem to make sense, that the fuel computer does NOT take the aux heater into account, as the fuel supply to the heater is seperate to the engine fuel, thus the computer / ecu has does not see it and cant take account of it. As a general rule I have found that all the cars I have owned drink more in the winter months. Gordon.

Yes that's right I'd forgotten, I had to buy a wiring converter for my Blaupunkt as well. Gordon

I always end up guessing, one day I will go and look at the gearbox. FWIW I normally select ERH, ERK comes up as 4motion on the vehicle details - click on 'more' on the vehicle info dialogue. Gordon

I replaced the vw standard blaupunkt with an 'Los Angeles' MP3 Blaupunkt head unit, straight swap but it did require the aerial amplifier unit before it would pick up MW/LW. I bought the MP3 as I couldn't be fussed adding a disk changer and having to run cables under the seat or to the boot. Overall I am quite happy with the stock speakers, but I'm sure replacing the front door speakers would add a bit more clarity to the top and bottom ends of the sound. Gordon

Slight Steering Wobble At Slow Speeds
Rallim replied to Rallim's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Thanks for all the replies. I am unable to look at the car properly until the weekend, (which is when I get to drive it, during the week my wife drives it and I'm on my bike, plus its dark when I get home!) I was thinking along the lines of worn bearings or joints, but I might have the wheel alignment and balancing double checked, I had noticed the wobble before the front tyres were changed (about this time last year)... originally had 15" reinforced Michelins, now has Goodyear reinforced. I will try that trick with the magazines, wish I had known about it with my Audi, as its is difficult to check joint/suspension wear if you jack the wheels off the ground as the suspension is at the extreme of its movement witht the struts being held in place by the end caps and not properly held against the strut top mounts. Gordon. -
I noticed some time ago, not long after I bought the car I could feel a slight steering wobble whilst driving between 20 - 40mph. It was only very slight, but with time it seems to be getting slowly worse, to the point its irritating me now and I want to sort it out. The wobble does not appear to be present whilst braking, just as you cruise along, in the time span I have been aware of it the car has had front tyres and brake+pads changed. Any ideas? Could it be ball joint or top strut mounr reawrelated? TIA Gordon.

I've just come across this thread which appears to offer the answer... Gordon

Aux belt slip? I heard slipping belt noises from mine this weekend when I was on full lock parking the car. But I have not made any further investigation, but I suspect the belt due to the ammount of dampness, it was changed in July. Gordon

Interesting Article Regarding Future Ice
Rallim replied to jkspoff's topic in I.C.E (In Car Entertainment) Discussion
My Blaupunkt (an ebay reboxed goods special! B) ) will read MMCs and SD Storage cards and play any MP3's it finds... ok not as convienient as a USB memory stick, but it allows me to play songs that I've got on my pocketpc memory card. Gordon. -
Well I would say looking at gsf that it seemed this was the 2.0l petrol:- 18787B AIR MASS METER-SIEMENS SHARAN 2.0 ADY 75.00 However, was the 2.0l unit in a 97 galaxy the same as the sharan, or is it the Ford unit? In which case GSF is a waste of time! Gordon.

I was only able to refit the light access cover properly on mine when I undid the wheel arch liner to remove the front bumper to fit fog lamps. Gordon.
