Its not possible to have one without effecting the other, mpg will always suffer slightly from a remap power ECU upgrade, you can't have the best of both worlds as you say wolfie. I still miss the extra power I had before though, the extra 35-40mpg made a big big difference, so much so, I am tempted to trade it in for a larger engine, maybe the 150bhp mk2, money permitting of course !

The air con for the Shalaxy range is well in need of an annual service, it is money well spent in the long run.

At least I now have a new water pump, new thermostat and new cam belt and tensioner, which was due for change anyway, all for

The remap I had done was excellent whilst I wasn't pulling a caravan, the extra torque and the general driveability was superb compared to the normal settings. It actually made an MPV enjoyable to drive and very quick off the mark. It is a shame the engine couldn't cope with the extra heat generated by it. I woul have it done again if I wasn't pulling this big 1.4 tonne trailer behind me, I won't mention the company as it isn't the fault of them, just my greed for extra power, plus there was nothing wrong with the actual remap, it just needed testing more.

Running Hot Over 70mph !
jkspoff replied to cartman's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I would agree with bigkev on that one, as I found out today. Make sure its not been chipped or has a boost box somewhere. http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...13206&st=45 -
IT WORKS ! Remap removed and returned to the original Ford ECU setup. Tested the Gal with caravan on a long journey up and down hills, motorway and A roads , no over heating at all. I will have to put it down to the remapped engine, its now back to the 115bhp, oh well, at least this means I won't have to trade it in. After all that, it was something I'd done to it, so heres to hopefully many more years motoring in the Gal.

Running Hot Over 70mph !

The thing you mentioned above about the gush of air from the expansion bottle when cold, no mechanic I have spoken to has diagnosed this as a sign of a cracked head, I take it this is, or could be, the case for others ? As this is exactly what mine is like. -
The head gasket etc has all been tested and there are no faults. I am still toying with the idea that there is something wrong with the coolant circulation, be it an air lock or something, the engine is in tip top condition, never uses any oil and returns excellent fuel economy. I do however agree that a remapped engine can cause premature damage if used to its limit for a long period of time, but mine hasn't.
-
Well, I am wondering whether to agree, but the proof is in the pudding, I am going to test the theory today, if the Gal is no longer overheating when towing then it was down to the remap, if it still overheats then the remap was not causing the overheating and therefore I would not hesitate to have it put back on. I agree that the engine does have to work harder with the remap and that other modifications should be done too to ensure proper cooling........well lets see, taking Gal and van for a run..............fingers crossed.......... :)

When its is filled up cold, then run hot on a journey, it overheats and the coolant flows out of the expansion bottle from the expansion bottle overflow outlet.

Looks good, its almost identical to our new one too (second hand 3 years old) bought a few weeks ago, Bailey Ranger 500/5. I like the layout and it seems really spacious. Its our first time at caravanning.

Water Temp Guage And Expansion Cap
jkspoff replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Sounds identical to my problems, but I have had a new radiator fitted and all coolant replaced. I am still tempted to drain off all the coolant once more and replace. Surely though, if the water pump is working ok then it should push any air lock out ? -
I have no miss firing, just overheating under load, there is also no coolant loss apparent, I am a bit reluctant to take the head off as it will cost me a lot of money, but will do that after the next test if it is still the same. I have now got the ECU returned to original format (115bhp), (not remapped), I will try the caravan once more tomorrow, fingers crossed that it might have been overloading the engine with remap. It's till confusing me and mechanics as to why the expansion tank is below the MIN mark every time I check it when it is cold, but returns to normal when warm (MAX mark).
-
I have sent back the expansion cap and keeping the original as its a better seal. Does anyone if it is possible to drain the coolant without having to take the undertray off, as I would like to flush the system out and make sure there are no air locks, and ensure its has the correct coolant mixture in it.

Clutter is just all the stuff that accumulates on your PC over time, it can be made of temporary files and generally stuff that you don't need, run the PC TotalCare option and tick all the boxes, it will be like new when you've finished, but it will delete your cookies too, unless you de-select that option.

Download and run www.iolo.com, system mechanic, it worked wonders on mine, there is a 30 day trial and then the option to purchase, it fixes and runs lots of diagnostics and repairs and speeds up your computer, including a proper defragment.
-
www.chipboost.com can remap instead of chip it, 115 to 150 bhp.
-
I've bought a new expansion cap and when it screws on there is no resistance at all, it doesn't appear to be making a seal whatsoever, whereas with the original cap it gets tight and allows a secure tight fitting, I just wonder if this is allow it to breath ? Could someone with a newish Galaxy check their expansion coolant cap and see if it tightens to a secure seal please ? In the mean time I have put the old one back on.
-
My on-going saga with my overheating caravan pulling Galaxy is continuing.........ordered a new expansion tank pressure cap, had a VW expert and independent garage check it over, next step is to put new cap on and get the ramapped engine put back to the original Ford mapping unfortunately, just to see if it makes any difference, as it was suggested by several mechanics that the extra power through the gears may be causing the balance of engine and cooling to overcome the original design when its under full load, however it is still only a last chance before head gasket strip down or trade in..... :D

Will This Fit Galaxy ?
jkspoff replied to jkspoff's topic in I.C.E (In Car Entertainment) Discussion
I've got the radio delivered now off ebay, it is the same size as a standard Ford radio (6000 etc), it looks excellent and has a CD, Cassette and multi changer controller, they were apparently fitted to higher spec Fords between 2000 and 2005. Its a Sony unit. The only problem is the Galaxy surround facia is too tight to take it (only be a couple of mm), and it will need a new cage to hold it in place too, and its different wiring to connect it to a standard Ford radio, so its off to the local fitter for a quote........why is life never simple ! -
The radiator has just been refilled due to the new water pump being fitted, would this not flush it and fill it and show up any blockage ?
-
I have checked the seal and it appears to be intact, it could well turn out to be a hose as raymac mentioned, I will also get the garage to check the temperature sending unit. Shouldn't there be some fault codes on VAG COM from the overheating relating to what part is failing ? The problem is that it never overheats at all when either driving hard or normally, only as soon as I attached the caravan and tow up hill.
-
Got the cap in my hand, what am I looking for, any particular issues, there appears to be a black section inside it with a pressure section as per photo, does the photo look the same as yours, or is there anything a miss ? :16:
-
The expansion tank seems to be leaking out when its full and bubbling, and pours out if you release the cap. There doesn't appear to be any leaks anywhere else in the system though but I will mention a 'coolant system pressure check' when I take it in, hopefully it will be something like that, if it is an air or coolant leak I will have to have a few words with the garage who fitted all the other bits to it.

With all the problems I am having at the moment with my Gal I might do this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Picture-of-YOUR-car-...1QQcmdZViewItem http://www.tanksalot.co.uk/ or maybe not.......
