Agreed - check door/tailgate wires in rubber gaitors - see Tech Faq's for pictures etc. As a first step, disconnect the battery positive terminal for 30 seconds and reconnect - this will reset the ECU. (You will also lose the radio coding so make sure you have the radio code before you do this - its usually on a sticker in the service booklet) You should disconnect the battery if you are repairing any wiring...... You have one or more short circuits thats need to be tracked down. Faulty fuse box? - Lazy auto spark more like! Fuse boxes dont short out circuits.....its either a problem in a wiring loom or sometimes the spade connectors fall off the back of the fuse carriers although I think this is not likely in this case. Water logged electrics is another possibilty although unlikely on 2003 model.

Except tin's 2.3 is a petrol engine which has no turbo, andyn666 is on the button plus the rear "slide" could also be shock absorber(s) worn.

Several members who had remaps were caravan towers and they were the ones that ended up with long term problems. You cant expect standard heads with a standard cooling system to cope with the extra torque, if it was that easy the manufacturer would have uprated the engine for free. Hope you dont join the club....

Viscosity is not the important parameter - you can use 5w30 or 5w40 but it must have VW505.01 or VW507 approval (i.e that spec must be printed on the tin...) These oils are the only ones suitable for PD engines which have a unique requirement for an exceptionally high shear strength oil. As I said earlier check the camlobes for damage before embarking on an expensive repair. The usual reason for a turbo bearing failure is lack of lubrication, which is often due to a blocked turbo oil feed pipe or contamination of the oil with debris. This pipe needs to be cleaned or replaced when changing the turbo.

Check the fuses. Recheck those gaitor wires and connector, wires can break internally and still have insulation on, breakages are common due to the flexing and bad design (not offset) Do you have a door open warning display on your model? Does it say the left rear door is open? WHAT I'm getting at is the door switch may be broken/pushed back. The car thinks the door is open, interior lights come on but timeout/switch off after about 5-10 mins to conserve battery - I'm not sure they will come back on until the car sees the door closed.

The only comment I will make is that several members have posted on this forum (search) that they remapped their cars, enjoyed the increase in performance and then a year or two later start to experience engine overheating or mysterious water loss problems which they cant fix and then find is down to cracking of the cylinder head. Not fair to the poor sods that buy the cars off them and dont get told the history....

from Opie Oils website You've been using the wrong oil and is possibly the reason youre seeing premature turbo failure. The symptoms tie in with failing turbo bearing leading to oil in the intercooler -> smoke on start up. Catastophic failure could occur at any moment - this is where the amount of oil leaking is enough to start running the engine on its own and the engine races uncontrollably away.The only way to stop it if this occurs is to hold the brakes hard and try and stall it. Otherwise the engine will destroy itself - its something that happens quite often on turbo diesels. Before you invest in a recon turbo - check the state of that camshaft - if thats wearing then there maybe even less point in attempting a repair.

Unfortunately not. IIRC the PIN is a very long number and should originally be on a tag supplied with the vehicle, sometimes this tag is not passed on to the customer though. A ford dealer (maybe even VW/SEAT) should be able to obtain the PIN from their database (at a price)

Check the service manual at the front for the 4 digit code - IIRC there is a place to stick the sticker there. Mine is stuck on the flap inside the glovebox - the salesman told me he always does that as the service manual can go astray. I think if you try too many times all that happens is the radio will lock out for about an hour befoer you can try again (not sure though). If you remove the radio and get the serial no. I believe members here have provided a PIN from some magical source. -
You didnt answer the question - is it a PD oil (VW505.01 or 507)? If not, you'd better check your injector camshaft lobes to see if you're lucky or been living on borrowed time....

What was the oil spec? It must be a minimum of VW505.01 (or VW507) Note 505.00 spec oil is not PD compatible. If it doesnt have any of these particular specs, then you've used an incompatible oil that is highly likely to damage your engine. PD oil has special high shear qualities needed by the unit injector camshaft. Without this, the camshaft gets stripped quickly.

Possibilities 1. Glowplugs - if not working might have a bit of grey smoke to start - but usually not this time of year and should clear within 5 - 10 seconds and only if engine is stone cold and not been run for 2 - 3 hours previously 2. Timing issue - could be a slipping timing pulley not sure on Mk2 but on Mk1 bottom pulley key wears, top pulley can slip on camshaft) 3. Camshaft wear - if non PD oil (505.01 spec) has been used, the cams can be worn/stripped. Take the rocker cover off and examine.

Interesting thread. Been having moments on and off where I start to think about getting rid of the old girl - she'll be 15 years old later this year with 127k currently on the clock. The reasons being very silly - another droplink going (£15 one from GSF lasted less than 18 months) - the a/c leakage rate seems to be getting worse - two blebs of rust spotted under paint on passenger side near sills - still have to unbend the damage that VW Hayseldens did last year :angry2: and annoying VED rate (£220 last year IIRC). Might need to replace front pads this year (still on original!!) But on the plus side - it costs me virtually nil to maintain - just bought genuine VW droplink (much better than pattern parts) for £9 and a couple of genuine oil filters for £6 each off fleabay! And Full synth long life Dexos2 oil (505.01 spec) from local vauxhall dealer at £15 per 5L. And it does everything asked of it from transporting family/kids/grandkids+ roofbox around europe at 85mph, to taking king size matresses/ all manner of rubbish to the local tip, and returning an average of 50+mpg. In total reliability and comfort. I did look a couple of years ago at C4 grand Picasso (quiet engine but rear seats for midgets, interior looks as if it will drop to bits easily) VW Touran (incredibly low rent interior, rear seats/boot a joke - even our little spaniel would complain) VW Sharan/Alhambra 3 (too big for my garage I suspect, feels and looks like a van with sliding door and passenger seat slide/tilt arrangement, yet interior feels so small and a bit spartan) I know the MK1/Mk2 is criticised for the heavy removeable seats - but this is exactly what makes it such a great car. These stupid fold away seats rob space and mean you cant even put your feet under the seats in front! No I'll be keeping her for a while yet - nothing else comes close as far as space, comfort and versatility goes. Plus the interior/materials on my 98 is/are plush/durable and easy to clean - why did velour go out of fashion??? And my wife wont let me get rid - she loves it.

Check the stiff plastic vaccum pipe from the servo, it commonly splits at the servo end and/or the intake manifold end -
I think daddyfixit is refering to his Mk2 Diesel - not the same as Argrdnr has a 2.0L petrol. The petrol fuel filter is mounted under the car inline with the petrol supply line somewhere in front of the fuel tank in a cradle. see here...

No, it was a worn timing pulley on the crankshaft (common problem) plus a slipping timing pulley on the camshaft (incorrectly tensioned bolt) that kept throwing the timing out on a daily basis.
