  1. Has Black Monday arrived?...... :(

I beg to differ, mot emission tests will not meet the conditions for egr operation, there is no load on the engine and combustion temperature will be too low even when revving the engine. Toyota explains egr operation here

EGR is used to reduce NOx, which would otherwise kill people through smog and other reactive by-products. Not a bad idea IMO. The EGR would not be active during an MOT test - it only happens at speed under moderate load. However I agree there must be better ways to clean up the exhaust, why don't they try water injection? (direct into combustion chamber)
  4. Try and check its service history - when was the fuel filter last changed? Sounds as if some hamfisted person has had a go at trying to solve a limp home problem which begs the question what else have they done? (It may have had a tuning box or remap at some stage.) You need to check if the glowplug are being activated on a cold start - use a meter or a bulb to check the glowplug busbar voltage when the key is turned with a cold engine. A faulty temperature sensor would stop the glowplugs from operating which would cause the symptoms you describe. Also is the battery in good condition?

Mainly an american myth, caused by the crap diesel they have over there.

OK, time for some serious debate.....while nobody's looking :16: Several forum members have posted that weight is a big factor....... Well I argue only to a small extent. If your driving style was one where you always slam on the anchors to slow down and this is happens very often, say every minute, then yes the "lost" kinetic energy due to braking will be directly related to vehicle weight. But if you trundle along at constant speed, the only factor that come into play are rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag. That is why in all the "ECO" models coming out at the moment, the major (and perhaps the only) difference with the "standard" model are skinnier, not so low profile "eco" tyres. Consider this, a Galaxy Tdi weighs about 1.8T and returns about 50 mpg at 56mph a modern HGV fully laden weighs 44T and returns about 9 mpg The HGV is 24x heavier but only uses 5.5x more fuel - and I reckon this is mainly due to the tyre rolling resistance than anything else after all it has about 5 times as many tyres not not mention the size of them.....
  7. Combination of unexpected sudden emergency braking/full acceleration repeated if necessary will outwit 99% of such drivers and open up a gap. If you come to a full stop, then the person that hits you is to blame as far as insurance is concerned.
  8. Maybe that's why it was so cheap? :) Or maybe you ordered it through a Nigerean Dealer........50% downpayment required........ ^_^ Or is it because my new job is a delivery driver for Ford.... ^_^
  9. When I wear my polarised sunglasses :o , there is a visible coloured interference pattern :) through parts of the windscreen, more so than conventional windscreens. I put this down to the thicker lamination layers ;) . At night there is a slight tendency for the wires occasionally to "glint" ^_^ and "halo" ^_^ oncoming headlights. Don't use the heated windscreen much as I have a garage ;) Yes...I am blind as well as deaf.......should I apply for a reduction in my TV licence?
  10. ^_^ Happy belated birthday! xxx Sorry I'm late but I been pulling the car into the garage...... :) ^_^ Lots of happiness, good health and good fortune for the future and may you live to a ripe old age!!

bah.....kid's stuff......let's talk advanced digital time domain processing algorithms or maybe a distance domain or even speed domain would be more appropriate and accurate.......

When I last looked, 999.9 mpg. But I'm not saying what definition of "average" I'm using.........there is more than one.....or don't you know?
  14. HELLO GIO! SURPRISED TO SEE YOU HERE! :D Some of us have attached/integral garages. Some of us have well insulated garages that driving a hot engined car into will keep warm for several hours. Some even have both! But I accept I know nothing and I bow to your superior knowledge on all aspects of our beloved galaxies. :25: Dare I suggest that for every hill you climb up, you're likely to come down another? :D
  15. Maybe you should disconnect the battery (remember the radio code first!) for a couple of minutes to reset the ecu. The limp home mode may have triggered default values that need to be cleared.
  16. Well.... B) ...what are the symptoms and whats been changed?
  17. Yeah, will show up later, maybe 300,000 miles later - or several sharp intakes of breath, whichever is the sooner........ B) IMO they are pretty tolerant, change the fuel filter - thats probably where all the water is anyway (when was it last changed anyway?) - suck fuel from the fuel line thats attached to the filter if you must. Use a tight fitting plastic tube, sucking it to start the flow and use the syphon effect to drain the rest. (Where the end of the tube is lower than the tank - remember that physics class? or were you asleep/daydreaming?) :o If what comes out contains a lot of water or petrol, put on your "I'm gonna sue that garage" boots.......
  18. Don't worry! I do believe you've been methodical in checking your mpg. Its just that this forum falls into 3 camps 1. The believers - those who realise that adopting eco-driving techniques can reap big rewards in many ways. But it also requires favourable conditions, a bit of good luck and a "good" car. 2. The majority of people probably don't care too much about mpg - they are the one who are running late all the time. Although they will jump into the no.1 category when the price of fuel goes up and they start taking an interest. 3. A small but vocal minority are the non-believers. They reason that because the Galaxy is shaped like a brick and weighs the same as a herd of elephants that it is physically impossible to break the 50mpg barrier just as it's impossible to travel faster than the speed of light (~125mph) The best "trip" I had was a 10 mile round journey into town and back at 3 a.m. - 73mpg! But I knew every bit of the road - where I could coast etc. Best trips are long slow (~50mph) A road journeys in summer down to Norfolk - 60mpg is frequent. Average is 52 - 53 mpg. Top Tip: In winter, keeping the car in a moderately heated garage results not only in a much more pleasant first ten minute experience in the cabin but does wonders for the mpg in the first ten miles.
  19. :o Well done! The best I've managed is around 850 miles....although I can get 800 miles fairly regularly. But then I've been told by someone on this forum that this is impossible and the fuel computer tells outright lies and in fact I'm only get 35mpg!! B)
  20. There is no fuel pump as such on your 97 Tdi. The "pump" is built in the injector pump. This is the big expensive lump on the front of the engine with the pipes going to the injectors. You need to remove the cambelt and piping before removing this. This involves liffting the engine and removing an engine mount, covers etc. See the procedure for changing cambelt for more info Once refitted, the pump needs to be setup as will the cambelt etc., the dealer would probably use diagnostics to check the injection timing was correct In short, a complicated (and expensive!) job that requires skill and the correct information and tools. Not really a DIY job unless you are experienced. "Thinking" it may be the fuel pump is an expensive "lets change it and see" excercise. I recomend you try a diesel specialist (e.g. Lucas etc) before you jump in and spend (possibly) a thousand pounds or more.
  21. Relays are on a "3rd level" behind the main fuse panel, which must be removed to gain acces to these levels....there is a thread with pictures illustrating this disaasembly if you search. However, it is likely the problem you have is the 3 way pressure switch which is located on top of the dryer - behind the front towing eye. It may be disconnected, faulty or alternatively your system may have been incorrectly regassed (too liitle or too much gas) in which case the switch prevents the compressor from being damaged.
  22. Make sure the immobiliser chip doesnt fall out when you change the battery or you'll end up with a key that'll open the car but won't start it!
  23. Don't count your chickens yet......... Condensor = an arm, Compressor = a legAll plus VAT, of course
  24. A phone call costs pence and takes a matter of minutes. Many people will give advice for free.....USE IT! You seem reluctant to seek someone elses opinion, you will and have paid dearly for the "head in the sand" approach. Phone now!!
  25. Yes. Sachs/Boge are OEM. I think you'll find the same story at your Ford dealer.
