Adding Traction Control
seatkid replied to insider's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
I think my instinct would be to steer clear of the pedestrian  The trouble with leaving a reasonable gap is that a bunch of t***s always see the need to fill it. ;) Thats how you like it, surely? -
If you used had fully synthetic from the start you probably wouldnt have got this problem, which is probably due to sludge. Fully synthetic is best, it must have VW505.00 approval , stamped on the can for a 1999 TDi 5W-40 or 0W-40 is ideal. 10W-40 will probably be semi-synthetic - still good but not as good as fully synthetic esp in high temperatures. Do not under any circumstances use oil additives. At best you will be wasting money, at worst you will ruin the engine. Tips on removing sump pan - Don't do it on your best carpet or your pristine block paved drive......

Adding Traction Control
seatkid replied to insider's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Today's under 30's generally don't know what ABS is, they just expect brakes to work. In another 10 years most people wont be aware of ABS or ESP as it will be standard. Do you ever consider that split/dual hydraulic circuits or a brake pressure limiting valve or even servo assisted braking makes you drive more recklessly? True, youngsters don't know about pumping brakes, or even using engine braking. But these are largely irrelevant to modern motoring. Remember 20-30 years ago, the handling and braking systems of the average car was attrocious compared with a new basic car. Believe me, ABS can turn a crisis into a non event........you will need it at least once in your life. -
Adding Traction Control
seatkid replied to insider's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
It's not wise to start urban myths that could endanger life. ABS saves lives. Safety organisations worldwide can probably give you plenty of evidence of the safety advantages of ABS. The manufacturers didnt put ABS on vehicles as a marketing gimmick, they put it on under pressure from government and insurance companies. AFAIK its now illegal to sell new cars in the UK without ABS. Traction control does work on black ice, for that matter any other colour of ice. Traction control may use the same wheel sensors as ABS, but it controls traction by applying a brake as opposed to releasing a brake and by reducing engine output momentarily. It requires a different type of brake control hydraulics so , insider... the answer is no, enabling traction control is not just a simple VAGCOM plus a little bit type fix. BTW EU is legislating to have ESP fitted as standard in the next year or two. -
Major Problems With My Air Con
seatkid replied to a topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
If your car is a MkII (please include vehicle details in posts!) then its common to get a leak on the dryer, which is attached to the condensor. You can get to it by removing a large plastic cap at the end of the condensor. Try a search and you will find details of this and pictures. -

Why Put Balance Weights On The Outside?
seatkid replied to g4hlf's topic in Questions about the New MKIII
Someone using the balance machine correctly will balance inner and outside independently, i.e. in 2 dimensions leading to different weight and positions inside edge and outside edge -
Considering your Galaxy was built 4 years before official production started, its not doing too bad... :D Take off the sump and clean the pickup gauze on the pickup pipe.

You can see the Red Arrow practicing several times a week over Scampton, just north of Lincoln. Lincoln is a much nicer place to visit than London anyway....

I think its unlikely to be the gearbox. Read this thread. It'll be either the selector stack or a problem with the cables.

And the part no(s) are? And the price? Do they fit Mk1 and Mk2?

FAQ
-
Read the guidelines for trainee members Also when someone says read the FAQ or search because there are tons of posts on the subject don't be surprised at someone's reaction when you say "What is the fault, far too much to read? " People give their time here for free, and its far too valuable to give every newbie their own customised detailed treatise for something that is asked almost on a daily basis. So in this case RTFAQ....it may even tell you how to fix your problem..... :16: ....and welcome to the forum ;)

Engine Managment Light !
seatkid replied to symmy's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
From what I just read, PO700 is a generic fault code put out by the Engine ECU to indicate that the gearbox ECU has told it something's wrong with the box. (via the CANBUS). You need to access the gearbox ECU for further information codes about the fault which may or may not be clearable via diagnostics. I suspect you need the dealers equipment for this. -
Seizing linkage, go tell a neighbour...maybe he'll read up on it for you.

Thats Ford, but I believe VAG have put out a 4year edict.

If the recall is a safety issue - and I think this one is ("burning to engine shield") - then they are legally obliged to rectify it FOC.

Minor Oil Leak
seatkid replied to Ex-Galaxy person's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Keep an eye on the oil level...... Could be leaking from oil filter gasket (I had this a couple of times) or from the (possibly cross threaded) sump plug. The oil drips onto the under engine cover and would only escape when facing up hill or the oil coats the underside of the car at speed. If you notice it on the ground, its likely to be a severe leak. So, again, keep an eye on the oil level...... -
Seesh...another one who doesnt read the FAQ or try a search..... its here!

All PD engines are now apparently 40,000 miles or 4 years whichever occurs first.
