  1. What about cambelt changes, facelift versions (at least the TDI) need 40K changes of cambelt, Thought that pre facelft versions needed 60 or 70K cambelt changes- does the SH include any changes. If not I would walk away (buts that just me)
  2. Ford specify Formula SD ie vw 505.01, wss-m2c917-A, acea a3-98/b3-98 or api sj/cf sae 5w-40 used about 4.5l on my last oil change. Garage gave me the other 0.5l in the original bottle for top ups. Says on the bottle
  3. Molar heat capacity (temp rise for a given number of joules of thermal enregy) of oxygen and nitrogen are the same, being diatomic the thermal energy is distributed between rotational(around common COM), vibrational and translational energy monotomic gases like helium and neon etc have different heat capacities so cant really see much advantage on the heat front. Had a chat with a chemist (not pharmacist) friend today and we can come up with a few possible reasons why it would be advantageous. 1) A pure nitrogen fill would be a much closer approximation to an ideal gas fewer intermolecular forces (van der waals) - probably would bonce back from deformation better (agrees with Ivor I think) 2) Oxygen may chemically attack the rubber - free oxygen radicals are extremely reactive. 3) In both the aviation industry and F1 tanks of liquified gases containing oxygen would be more hazardous - think about the explosive risks when the uninformed grease the valves on oxygen cylinders ;) Richmond - as far as diffusion goes the rate of diffusion is proportional to the sqaure root of the mass quotient e.g sqrt(32/28) = 1.07 ie nitrogen will diffuse at 1.07 times the rate of oxygen (slightly quicker) although this is simple diffusion the permeability of the membrame (tyre) needs to be accounted for. There are certainly anomalies found at extreme temperatures and pressures e.g. liquified helium(3 I think) does funny things like flow up surfaces and through very small holes very quickly but if you can remember were you saw the bit about hydrogen diffusing slower than air tell us all - we could all become billionaires. It could be used to purify hydrogen as a fuel gas :D :D .
  4. I am intrigued and puzzled by this 100% nitrogen inflation, why should oxygen diffuse through a rubber tyre quicker than nitrogen. Given that both are diatomic gases of very similar relative molecular masses, in fact oxygen being 32g per mole is slightly larger/heavier (nitrogen 28g per mole). If the kinetic energy of the molecules are the same (dependent only on absolute temperature) the oxygen molecules move slightly slower! I can only think that there must be a chemical reason to do with the rubber itself and since normal air contains 78% nitrogen and 18% oxygen the oxygen must positively race through the tyre to make the difference quoted above. Can anybody shed any light on this. I would also like to know where to get 215/55x16 reinforced tyres from (as specified on post facelift (2001 on) galaxies) for
  5. are they (avons) reinforced ? ZR's?
  6. Typical - answering my own post just found a USB version usb version
  7. Does your laptop have a serial port? They don't appear to do the leads for usb ports, so you would need a PCMCIA card with serial ports or usb/serial converter. If anybody can correct me please do since my laptop is a Vaio with no serial ports :P
  8. and how cheap they are on Ebay ebay item not new though :o
  9. Not offhand but I will pop in tomorrow if I'm passing and ask. I popped in today(Fri) but they were a bit busy, might try again over the weekend
  10. There is a problem with the instrumentation pod - we have had two new pods fitted by Ford under warranty, they had stopped replacing them while the problem was being sorted out (search on 'slow fuel gauge' or similar may get original posts). Collecting my gal today (40k service) I'm told that Ford estimate that the redesigned units may be ready by the middle of March but shortage of new units will mean that replacement will be delayed. See here Incorrect gauge readings Slow fuel gauge
  11. Any Idea what Ford/Seat/Vw charge for an extended warranty - given that they have just put in a new autobox (which they reckon was the best part of 2k fitted) ?? Nik V
  12. I managed to change the same bulb a while ago, the space is tight (medium sized hands) even the wife tried but eventually IIRC I used a pair of snipe nosed pliers to hold the bulb holder, took a bit of fiddling. Nik V
  13. sorry Noelth here is the item number 2462644337
  14. just seen a set on ebay, sorry not got the link nik V
  15. Hi last time I asked at a dealer the seats were
  16. Just got a quote for the 40K service on our tdi automatic (want to get it done before its out of warranty).
  17. This one is in Shefford, Bedfordshire. Last year the best they could do was
  18. Went to local Ford rapidfit today priced up 2 front tyres - Fitting +valves
  19. It appears that Ford fit the Michelin Pilots, Do they wear any better than the Dunlops. We bought our galaxy at about 20K miles and the tyres on the from lasted to about 25K. We replaced all round (kept two michelins from the back)with Dunlops and 13K miles later the front are looking decidedly worn. Nik
  20. Apparently a careless mechanic can cause the wiring problem by letting the gearbox 'Hang' from the wiring loom - according to mechanic who works at local main dealer!!! Nik
  21. Really - Last summer the only two alternatives for 215/55 reinforced were dunlop or (even more expensive) Michelin's there was a rumour that another manufacturer were bringing one out. Do you need reinforced tyres - there seems to be some confusion at the moment??? Nik
  22. Ah just checked your earlier post and see you have 205/60 R15, my owners manual does not list any 15 in as can be seen in my earlier post so I would have thought you were Ok with what you've got. There seems to be a discrepancy between the Seat(97) manual and the Galaxy(01) manual about 215/55 specifically. NIK
  23. As far as galaxy's are concerned it only appears to be the post facelift models whether these had a differejnt tyre size fitted as standard I don't know, according to the three places I got quotes from (rapidfit - local maindealer site, F1 tyres bedford & ano???) 215/55 had to be r.f. and at the time only michelin and dunlop did these, in fact my gal came with the michelin r.f. straight from the factory. The table in my owners guide specified that 195/60 R16 (97/99) , 205/55 R16 (96/98) & 225/45 R17 (94) are all un-reinforced (I don't know what the 9? numbers stand for. At the time I checked many Galaxy's and although I can't remember what size tyres they had pre-facelift models did not seem to have 215/55 . What size of tyres have you got Andy??
  24. Interesting.. From p238 Galaxy owners guide " 215/55 R16 95 r.f. (H, V or W depending on engine performance) or in a winter tyre 215/55 R16 97 H r.f. M+S " According to this manual (2001) 215 are the ONLY tyres that need to be re-inforced al other sections are not (195,205,225) Nik
