  14. need new glowplugs?? apparently the metal crystallises over time and doesnt heat as well, had this with escort tdi - replaced with cheap
  15. Sheared engine bolt/mounting ?? engine/gearbox rocks back when not under load to give the thump??? There is one that commonly shears - think its a gearbox retaining bolt.
  16. Got some tyre place to put new tyres on all round when we got the car (3 years ago) - they only had the tyres at 32 front 30 rear - took me a couple of weeks to realise !!!!!! the wear and handling    Usually run ours at 41 front 38 rear - 3 adults(often) & 3 kids
  17. If it is a standard jack plug/socket then the connections(s) to the tip (and for stereo/multipole) are provided by sprung contacts which become looser over time - if you can access the back of the socket you can usually bend the spring contacts enough to both improve the contact and push the plug sideways enough to ensure that the common makes a good connection and tightens the plug in the socket. Possibly dirty but the plugging/unplugging action usually cleans the contact area - until it becomes loose although a thin layer of oxide can cover the contacts -
  18. What instructions ?? try again - hold reset down and turn on ignition
  19. Luckily you don't have to take part in the 'mindless drivel' if you don't want to - plenty of serious threads - I'll bet doa2 will be back when he needs some info :(

  23. vag-com - hardware to connect to laptop/pda +software to pick up/set/reset fault codes. I hope its not the autobox, ours suddenly picked up these slow start symptoms - luckily still in warranty, frauds found 'debris' in the box - outcome - new box fitted by them (
  24. going into 'limp home mode' ?? sometimes resets on restart - possible problem with autobox ?? - needs the codes read, either a Fraud job or someone local with a vag-com
