Replacing Rear Brake Pads
sasquartch replied to blagger1's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Just done this today. I discovered that you really do need the tool. I managed to borrow one from my local garage luckily. Once I had the tool it was a few minutes work to wind the pistons back in I'd definitely recommend anyone to not even bother trying to do the rear pads until they get one. Mine is a 2005 TDI with Lucas brakes possibly other types exist -
Brake Pads - Questions
sasquartch replied to sasquartch's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Any idea what the Eurocarparts part number is ? Couldn't find the cable on the site anywhere  -
I've recently had the yellow warning light on the dash come up to indicate brake pad wear. I replaced the front pads and other than the fact they squeak a little (hoping this is still because they are bedding in) they seem to work fine. Squeaking I think is improving with use - yes I did use copper grease on back of pads  When I changed the pads the electrical connector on the loom that connects to the brake pad came apart. I managed to push the brake pad connector into the damaged loom and with a small ty-rap the connection seemed fine. The loom seems to run fom a connector in the wheelarch to the brake pad and what I assume is something to do with the ABS. However a couple of days use later the yellow light has come on a couple of times. Strangely not when actually braking. Question 1 - does the yellow light come on when the wires are open or short circuit ? Question 2 - is there only 1 sensor for all 4 wheels (the back brakes haven't been touched. Question 3 - How thick should the back brake pads be when new - I'm guessing a lot thinner than the front. The car is a 2005 TDi with 50k miles, brakes original until I changed the font pads (owned from new) I used vag.com to see if any codes logged but could find nothing, no problems anywahere. ANy advice welcomed !

Tyres Which Ones Give Value For Money
sasquartch replied to gixersteve's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Looking for tyres for my 2005 TDI (215/55/16 97W reinforced) I currently have Michelins which have worn well - looking on etyres.co.uk they have Michelin Primacy HP and HP DT1 tyres. Anyone know what the DT1 variant means ? They are quitre a bit cheaper. I can't see any reference to the DT1 type on the Michelin website either Any ideas ? Looking a bit closer at the etyres website I think the answer is that the DT1 tyres are NOT reinforced - hence no good for a Shalaxhambra. Best price I can get is -

Thanks all - a few things to look at then - first check the fuel is delivered to the heater, then if that's ok replace the glowplug. Where have people bought their glowplugs from ? Also can anyone say whether the data that is reported by vag.com is enough to identify which heater type is fitted (and hence which glowplug to buy) or is there some sort of ID plate on the heater I need to look at ?
-
Thanks for the reply What I really want to find out is if the data from VAG.COM indicates what model of heater it is (and therefore which glowplug to buy) - it seems there are more than one type of heater fitted over the 10 years or so of production. It seems very likely that it is the glowplug - if it was a problem with fuel (ie the pump) would vag.com be exoected to give another error message ?

Hi a I know this has been covered before but wanted to get some feedback first. I have a 2005 (I think manufacture date is something like 11/04) 1.9TDI manual with the usual non-functioning auxiliary heater. I decided to try and diagnose the problem and the results are as follows. Shareware VAG.COM detects module 18 (AUX Heater) and reports VAG Number 7M3 815 071B, Component HEIZG. B/D5W 0001. It reports error code 01409 Repeated Flame-out. I reset the code. I then start the engine (it's only 3C outside and see if the aux heater does anything. I can hear the heater gradually spool up and I can feel air / gas being pumped out of the heater unit exhaust. It doesn't get hot so ignition clearly isn't happening. After a minute or so I can hear the heater unit spool down. I checked VAG.COM later and the fault code had re-appeared. Does this sound like the glow-plug ? Another thread (can't find it now) I'm sure said that the aux heater on 2005 models is different and another type of glow plug is required. So, does anyone know a) Does this sound like the glowplug, and :) What glowplug to buy (hopefully the vag.com data will specify this), and c) where the best place to buy one is Is it just a question of replacing the glowplug, clearing the fault code and that's it ? Or is there more to it than that. Thanks for any advice

Vagcom Anybody Please..
sasquartch replied to swifty's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
My first go at using vag.com resulted in one code being read then Windows closing the program down. I was using Vista Tried on a XP PC and everything worked fine. -
I got my cable from ebay today and got vag.com loaded up ok (wouldn't run without crashing on a vista lappy but seems fine on XP) Sure enough the heater reported repeated flameout. I cleared the fault. Somewhere on the forum (can't find it anymore) it was suggested that vag.com will say what the temperature reading is so you can tell whether the heater should actually trigger. Does this need a registered version of vag.com ?? It seems quite cold today so once the code was cleared I went for a 10 minute drive. When I got back I could hear a noise from the back which sounded like the heater and the exhaust of the heater was warm but not hot. The temp guage was maybe half way between bottom and half way. So I'm not sure if it's working properly yet. I rechecked after and no new codes were logged. Is there anything further i can do with the shareware version of vag.com to check all is well ? I have a 2005 TDi Silver

Windscreen Washer Problem
sasquartch replied to sasquartch's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
UPDATE :( All fixed. After struggling to see where the pump was from above I actually fixed the problem in about 5 minutes. I just jacked up the car a little on the nearside and revoved the four torx screws at the bottom of the wheel arch liner, bent back the liner and there is the pump, easily accessible. As I had suspected the pipe had popped off (due to being frozen) - just pushed pipe back on and all is now working back and front. I am now a happy chappy :( -
Vagcom Anybody Please..
sasquartch replied to swifty's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
looks ok - although until i get mine and try it out i cant be absolutely sure. however, it's not a great amount of money, even if it works only once it would save money on garage bills I'd give it a go :D -
Vagcom Anybody Please..
sasquartch replied to swifty's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
See my thread earlier this afternnon - it seems any of the cables on ebay for about 12 quid all in will work with the shareware version of vag.com. I'm ordering a cable today - I'm near Potters Bar so quite close to you - but for the sake iof 12 quid, if it works is a bargain. You'd be welcome to try mine when I get it. I'll let you know how I get on although it won't be delivered before the weekend if not next week i'd expect. -
Diag Kit Recommendations

Hope this helps....if not visit ross-tech for further info. Thanks, it looks like it can read and clear fault codes which is all I really need. So, is there any particular cable I should buy ? Ebay has loads for around a tenner eg http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/409-1-KKL-VAG-COM-US...=item45f067aa7b Will this cable be OK or should I look elsewhere ? Thanks -

Diag Kit Recommendations

Looking to get vag.com to diagnose my aux heater so looking for a suitable lead. I'm assuming I can download vag.com from ross-tech free ? Where can I get a good lead that will work - I want the full functionality of vag.com ? I'm assuming that the vag.com software only has limited functionality unless I buy the full version - what do I get / not get with the free version ?? Advice welcome. Thanks -
Windscreen Washer Problem
sasquartch replied to sasquartch's topic in Ford Galaxy Technical Section MK I MK II
Don't think so, the front washers were fine until I tried the rear washer -
Driving home tonight and the washer bottle ran out (not suprising given the amount of salt thrown up at the moment). When I got home I refilled the bottle and the front screen washers worked fine. Thought I'd try the back screen too, could hear the motor working but no water came out. Kept trying it thinking the pipe just needed a bit of pressure to clear it but after about 30 seconds the motor started running much faster as though there was no pressure. The front washers now dont work either. Bother (or words to the effect of) I said. Sounds like a pipe has popped out somewhere. I looked over the forum and saw references to the pipe that can come apart and result in a wet footwell but that doesn't seem to be the problem. As both washers are fed by a single bottle does it sound likely the fault is at the bottle ? Is there just one motor for both front and back. Looked at the TIS disk and although it has instructions for removing the entire bottle it talks about removing the front bumper which hopefully won't be necessary. Anyone got any experience of this and what the likely cure will involve ? Also my aux heater hasn't seemed to work at all this winter (my wife normally drives it and probably wouldn't notice one way or another) but thats a different story.... BTW, it's a 2005 TDi Silver
