  1. What type of Gal have you? Petrol/diesel? CC?
  2. Try a mobile phone charger - see if its red light stays on and doesnt flicker. Maybe the earth is loose.
  3. They open fine. Have you got Adobe Reader installed. White spirit will remove any glue residue.
  4. Has anyone suffered from the rust bug and needed welding? Specifically the box chassis member just in from the nearside front jacking point. It gets sprayed all the time by salt and water from the tyre. Mine is rusting, layers are flaking off and today, while trying to do a disc pad change, the jack just pushed its way up through the rust. (9 years old, 178000 miles). I guess it will need welding soon.
  5. Yellow lights are just warnings and you can carry on driving home - then sort them. Red warning lights usually mean stop. Depends what they are. Check the oil after at least half an hour of being stopped on level ground. When was the filter last changed?
  6. The join in the rear wash pipe is under the carpet trim just under the door so remove the two screws near your feet and the 2 or 3 in the trim strip and look underneath.
  7. I was offering to explain any of the "bits" for you as I've had a Mk1 and a Mk2 gal for 10+ years now. Main maintenace thing is to replace oil and filter at least every 10000 miles and use reinforced tyres [rf or extra load].
  8. Looks nice! What "extra gadgets" have you got? Climate control? Trip computer? Cruise control? tjat you ned help with
  9. The highway code recommends you park with your wheels facing into the kerb if the vehicle were to roll, forwards or backwards, and in first or reverse gear. Also, today's cars are too full of [electronic] gizmos like electronic/foot operated "handbrakes". Handbrakes should be operated by a good old lever that you can yank very tight on a hill. All these ABS, DSR, ATC, ASR, etc etc will cause us issues in 5 - 10 - 15 years time.
  10. Yry and get a Ghia. Better trim, did the Mk 1 have Climate?
  11. Like the vast majority of screws it unscrews anti clockwise. Try it by hand first, then wearing rubber gloves for more grip. Then use a proper tool.
  12. In this weather the glow plug light would only normally be on one second or so. In winter, mine is only on 3 or 4 seconds max. However, the plugs do stay on after the light goes out and you start up. Your light is on a long time. Get an auto electrician to check the circuits.
  13. What is VSS?
  14. Yep, spraying all pivots and nuts and bolts with WD-40 helps.
  15. I believe that if the gas is low pressure, the compressor will not kick in. Usually nothing "lights up" to say it's working - just "AUTO" on the climate contral display screen
  16. 1.9 Ghia trim TDi every time. More economical, more torque. 2.8V6 does 20mpg. 1.8 in Sharan and 2.0 in Gal underpowered. They say 2.3 is OK.
  17. Andyfishing, it was a diesel car that was wrongly fuelled with petrol. So it won't have spark plugs or diesel in the oil.
  18. If you know an oil sheik, get it! I got 20 mpg out of a V6, on a good day, and that was not towing. Both electric cooling fans failed.
  19. Yes, ignition on but engine not started (so it's quiet). Kneel down next to each sensor, it should tick/fizz. Some say that this still may not fix the flashing dash button or a control box fault.
  20. The 2001 (Mk2) handbook says that you can use the following tyres: 195/60 R 16 C 97 or 99 205/55 R 16 C 96 or 98 215/55 R 16 95 rf. 225/45 R 17 94 all bove H, V or W depending on engine performance (rf. = reinforced)H is fine for diesels Winter tyres 195/60 R 16 C 97 or 99 T M&S 215/55 R 97 H rf.
