  1. Sounds pretty good but not exceptional to me. I'm getting just under 40mpg from my 6-speed manual on a basic "diet" of 5-mile stop-start drive to work, and 7 mile varied journey home including about 1 1/2 miles on the M3. (Different route to and from work due to traffic situation in town centre). The few long trips I've made where I've got to 60mph or more for a number of miles generally give an indicated average of around 47mpg.
  2. |Maybe this makes it clearer: Central locking just means thaty ou can lock or unlock all the doors including tailgate from one place - usually from either front door, or by using a remote control "plipper". Deadlocking means that the door lock mechanism is disconnected from the handles, so as Fredt said, anyone breaking in cannot unlock the doors in the "normal" way. On the facelifted cars, and maybe some of the "first generation" shaped ones, the remote key will lock all doors (central locking) AND apply the deadlocking at the same time.
  3. My Jan 2001 X-reg - works same as Nikpv describes, and the handbook is wrong.
  4. Your first photo shows clearly the words "made in Germany", so I wonder who makes this stuff? (assuming that made in Germany doesn't refer only to the container)
  5. Eurocars would have been my first choice too, if I could afford to buy new. Do you mind pre-registered? Could then try Trade Sales of Slough or Motorpoint etc. If you are near Epsom, could also try Inchcape Ford in Guildford, IIRC they nearly matched an imported price for someone as featured in What Car magazine some time last year.
  6. Ah, so you have the satnav unit. Good luck in finding out if you can fit a remote, I suppose it must be possible but don't know if the earlier stalk remote control units use the same wires./configuration etc as the new steering wheel controls. Someone must know how the steering wheel passes info to the head unit - is it via sliprings, twisting wires or infra-red? If the satnav is made by Blaupunkt, is it possible that some of their infra-red remotes for their other head units are compatible with the Gal satnav unit? Could be worth giving Blaupunkt UK a call.....
  7. Glad you got it sorted, and at not too great a cost either. Wishing you many miles of trouble-free motoring. Ivor
  8. Yup, front and rear screen heaters work at the same time on mine, and with both fans at full speed too.
  9. Did it fix the problem?
  10. Sounds like they are not sitting correctly on the "stub axle". Time to get a proper measurement made with dial gauge? Or are the pads not releasing properly and cooking the discs, causing them to warp?
  11. Not seen that in UK yet, Had a good look at a few Castrol oil bottles last evening, as it happens, and none of the different grades of GTX (including GTD) is marked as being suitable for VW 505.01. Just keeping my fingers crossed that I won't need to top up between services.....
  12. Facelifetd Gals use a different steering wheel, not a stalk to control the radio. Best bet is to change to an after-market unit with remote control if you really want a remote that badly.
  13. Nope - they are designded the "wrong" way. Mine had the original "banana blades" fitted when I bought it, and I purchased Bosch replacement blades which are the same. The instructions (plus looking at plenty of other used examples of Gals on the road) confirm that the "wrong" way is the "right" way! Bizarre.
  14. Bowed as in --- if the wipers are at the end limit of their sweep, they are not parallel to the A-post - the gap from blade to A-post in the middle of the blade is greater than the gap at the top and bottom; the wipers are a sort of crescent shape when viewed from the edge of the rubber looking towards the metal part of the blade. Similarly when they are parked, the middle of the blade is closer to the bottom of the screen than the 2 ends (not sure I've made that sound clear?)
  15. The metal pillars at the side of the windscreen are called "A-Posts" or "A-Pillars", and I agree that they are wide and do cause blindspots. I tried to get straight wiper blades not bowed ones when mine needed changing to reduce the blind-spots but didn't find any - those blades sure are long! Snow build-up is a problem that affects almost all cars though. The width of the Gal's A-posts doesn't help, as you point out. Volvo are working on a semi-transparent A-post which may provide the best technical solution, even if they look ugly! For info, in car language, the "B-Post" is the pillar between front and rear doors, the "C-post" the one behind the rear doors etc (you get the trend?).
  16. What about moving the handbrake to between the side of the seat and the driver's door, freeing up the centre "aisle" to walk through to the middle row, or giving spave for a proper centre storage bin? Or even a return to the old "umbrella" handbrake under the top part of the dash?
  17. Charles - do you realise that all the seats slide forward and back about 6 inches on their mountings? This should give you plenty of middle seat legroom so long as the third row seats are not tumbled forward (closed up).
  18. Only if he's an electrician in his spare time!
  19. I asked this question a few months back and the wisdom of this forum provided the answer..... They are for holding sticks of celery.

  21. Is waterpump replacement recommended with cambelt on any/all engine versions?
  22. ..and what about when tyres over 5 years old will cause an MOT failure, as is being discussed (allegedly) by the eurocrats? Time to seriously consider emigrating outside of the EEC.
  23. (gulp) I think I may like to become a "crouched technician".....
  24. Maybe the deadlocking has accidentally activated on that door, disconnecting the handles from the lock itself. Use a screwdriveror similar to operate the latch on the door edge, as has been suggested. Then see if it will close and re-open......
