  1. Sorry, don't know about the Galaxy. Previously I have had a Rover 820 which used 2 temp sensors, one for the gauge and the other for the ECU, mounted very close together on the thermostat housing. When I changed the thermostat I changed both sensors as a precaution.
  2. Flashing display will need to be cleared by plugging into diagnostic machine and re-setting. "Lo" on the display just means that you have set the temp below the minimum value that can be auto-controlled, so air should just blow as cold as possible - same effect in reverse at high temp, when display reads "Hi". On single air-con and single climate control (ie no roof vents) the rear blower just acts as a fan to circulate air within the rear of the cabin. IIRC the air comes out from the floor-level vents between 2nd and 3rd row of seats on nearside (RHD cars).
  3. Get him to buy an auto-dipping mirror, or drive a little further back from his rear bumper!
  4. What do you mean by "unable"? Lever will not move across to the required plane, or funny grinding noises that discourage you from moving it any further? (or something else)
  5. June 2001 is too early for the engine to have the mods to take 506.01. Phone the Castrol helpline or VW UK to get the exact details - have your engine serial number to hand.
  6. Is your car still under warranty? There is an issue with faulty dashboard clocks, and a fluctuating temperature gauge could be due to this.....
  7. Have used PMR within the car with no problems - don't laugh :D the children use it to communicate from front row to rear row of seats!
  8. My Gal is also X-plate, facelifted with only lap belt in the middle. There was a possibility of fitting the special belt made by IIRC www.securon.co.uk if a mounting plate is made up, but other than that, I drew a blank and try to keep this seat empty.
  9. Who needs a dipping mirror anyway? Don't think I have ever used the mirror dip facility in over 25 years of driving.
  10. If you have the correct "keys" take it out of the car and stick it in your airing cupboard. If still no joy, you could risk "cleaning" it by pouring distilled water over it, then drying it thoroughly in your airing cupboard for a week. Or you could claim under your insurance....... If you think the position is bad wrt cup-holders, when the Focus was being designed, Ford intended to fit the fuel cut-off inertia switch under the cupholders. As I worked for the manufacturers of this device at the time, we politely pointed out the risk from spilt drinks and Ford re-positioned the switch. For any of you who had Sierras, it was NOT us who told Ford to put the switch by the spare wheel, so that when you threw the old one in there after a puncture, you then found that the car would not start again.......
  11. Does it take its power from a cigar lighter - ie can you just unplug it and fit it into another car? Can the road map info be upgraded, eg by a lead to a PC?
  12. They may be right - there is a pressure sensor and if there is no gas in the system then the clutch should not operate. However, if you have a fault in the clutch system and the clutch is permanently engaged, then you will have a problem! Full gas replenishment should be possible in under an hour and under
  13. Amazing, never seen such a mess  Time to get the Birmingham screwdriver out......
  14. Even so, I don't think that there are that many materials that will stand 2000 deg C for very long. We have recently struggled at work to find an insulated cable that will withstand 450 deg C for more than a few minutes (one hour is required and we have ended up stripping off the insulation and using ceramic beads protected by glassfibre sleeving, supported by metalwork, plus caking most of it in ceramic adhesive).
  15. ...and the dealer's bonus (from the manufacturer or importer) for selling over and above his quota is often in excess of his normal profit margin for a normal sale, hence some cars are offered for sale at very attractive discounted prices at certain times of the year.
  16. appropriate: e-mail from Castrol received earlier this week: Ivor, at last a customer clued up on VW 505.01 spec! This is only available either through your VW dealer or through one of our distributors Castrol Classic Oils on 01954 231668. They offer a mail order service. Regards John DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE NON-505.01 spec oil - Millers do an oil to 505.01 which I supplied to the garage that did my recent service. DO NOT USE 506.01 in an early PD 115 engine - check that it has been built to take the 506.01 spec - and don't use it unless you are going onto variable servicing anyway - unless you don't mind the extra cost.
  17. I would expect the MAF to melt long before it reaches 2k deg C!!!
  18. Because the dealers get sales bonuses from the manufacturer, based on the number of cars they sell. That's why as a private buyer, it is best to try to buy at the end of a month, or end of a dealer's sales "quarter" when they will be looking to maximise their sales for that sales period.
  19. Yup - changed with first round of "improvements" from build date around Nov 2000 (mine was built in Oct 2000) same time as headrests went from solid to rectangular frame with empty centres to improve rear visibility, and alloy spare changed to steel. The reason is to reduce the apparent height of the rear of the car - some other car companies paint the sidesills black for the same reason- to make it appear less tall. Thing is, on an MPV it doesn't really work!
  20. Don't know the area, try yellow pages. Don't use that dealer again would be my advice ! Commiserations for coming across another bunch of no-hopers.
  21. Are the bulbs moving in their holders? Once had to get a Fiat's rear lights to work by wedging cardboard in the lamp holders to press the bulbs to one side to make good contact. Italian electrics - don't you just love them!
  22. Are you sure it isn't the wheel fouling on the steering column shrouds? A couple of minutes work with a suitable file could sort it if it's this
  23. Don't talk to me about that  I scanned the DVLA site for plates ending in 1 VOR and there is nothing available! Never seen any on the road either so I think DVLA must have a vendetta against those called Ivor! A 1 VOR would have been nice, or D 1 VOR (diesel Ivor). Would prefer a non-dating plate though 11 VOR (I Ivor) would be nice :o
  24. If I let the clutch out slowly, there is sufficient low-down torque to climb my driveway without having to touch the accelerator. Not yet come across a petrol-engined car that will do that - usually have to give them at least 300rpm from a standing start at the bottom of the drive.....
