  1. Take it to an aircon specialist - there is a rough-and-ready method that involves checking bubbles in a sight-glass under the bonnet, but the best way is to have it drained, vacuum-dried and re-filled using new oil for lubricating the compressor too. If yours hasn't been done yet, best to spend the money on it now. On my Renault Scenic, I had the system "serviced" as above at 5 years old when there were no signs of any problems. The aircon on my parents car hasn't been touched in about 7 years and still appears to work OK (but they are changing the car in late September anyway).
  2. ..so could be an electronics glitch in the ECU, or a bit of dirt on the MAF that got burnt off when engine was switched off (see recent comments ref MAF wore heated to several hunder degrees C for a few seconds after engine switched off). Fingers crossed that you get away with a zero-cost fix.....
  3. Loss of power is often down to the MAF sensor playing up or failing. ISTR that no long-term damage will be caused by leaving it disconnected but it may fail emissions check meaning that technically you are breaking the law and liable to a fine. It is not possible to clean or repair the unit itself. New MAFs are available from GSF, VAGParts and others as well as main dealers  It is not necessary to buy the whole unit complete with mounting portion of the intake trunking, just the sensor is all that is usually required, and it is a simple 5-minute job to change it.
  4. Engine will feel pretty lifeless below about 2000rpm due to no proper turbo assistance, especially if trying to accelerate uphill - just round the corner from my house is a slight hill, not as bad as my driveway (se some of my other posts!) but if I change up to second before, or on, the hill, the car almost dies. Getting to the top in first avoids this problem. Fans not working may be due to a blown fuse, but anyway looks like you need to take the car back to the dealer because of faults the AA missed - a rear wiper working after it has been switched off is definitely odd! Having said that, my rear wiper "stutters" back to rest when switched off sometimes (pauses twice or three times on the "return to rest" part of the sweep), then keeps going for another few sweeps after switched off until it completes a sweep without stuttering. Sometimes it is perfectly OK, so these rear wipers may well have a mind of their own.
  5. You'll know if you have heated front seats - IIRC even on the Mark 1 they are not automatic so you will have 2 switches on the dashboard for them, one for driver and one for passenger. As to not re-starting this seems odd. Once the engine has been running for a few minutes tehre should be enough heat NOT to need the glowplugs for a re-start. You may have to let the engine churn away for a few seconds, but it should re-start with no trouble. If you are experiencing something worse than this, maybe it's the immobiliser cutting in?
  6. So what connector did you attach it to? (Don't tell SA I)
  7. Try Intapart or scrappies. IIRC it will be the electronics for the motor that need replacing but they are not available on their own from Ford or VW, they only come as part of the motor assembly.
  8. Seconded :o Leaking brake fluid should be sorted at once. Probably best to replace with new and at
  9. Sounds like fuelling problem - dirty or blocked throttle body/injectors? Before sticking it into a dealer, consider something like Home-Tune or Tune-up where you can talk to the technician as they analyse and test for faults. You may be surprised at what you learn about the condition of the engine!
  10. (1) If it supposed to have been checked by the AA, find out their customer service details and complain at once; (2) Not sure about the warranty in Ireland but in UK, first year is supported by FoMoCo, second and third year are supported by the dealer network. If you have 24 months cover in Ireland I suspect that the same basis applies - FoMoCo for first 12 months then dealers for the balance. (3) Be prepared to reject the car - make your displeasure known to the selling garage but do give them a chance to fix things first, supplying you with a courtesy car in the meantime. Sorry that you have had a bad experience so far, hope it is soon sorted to your satisfaction.
  11. The Galaxy has only ever been fitted with VW diesel engines, all of 1.9 litres capacity/displacement. From launch (1995 or 1996 IIRC) the VW TDI engines were fitted, then when the car was facelifted in mid-2000, the VW TDI PD engines were fitted. These need special oil (see other threads for more information). The V6 fitted to all variants is also a VW engine. Only the 4-cylinder petrol engines fitted to the Galaxy are made by Ford rather than VW. Just to confuse you more, the 4-cylinder petrol engines fitted to the Sharan and Seat Alhambra are made by VW, ie the Galaxy 2.0 has a different petrol engine to the Sharan 2.0
  12. Sounds like a Zetec with optional alloys at 17". Electric front windows rule out the Ghia, LX comes with plastic wheeltrims and no parking sensors. Zetec has front and rear parking sensors but usually comes with 7-spoke 16" alloys as standard. Badge options for engine size are as stated above by GalMan.
  13. I've got a special wooden keyboard that doubles up as a time-shifter
  14. Anyone beginning to have doubts......... Fuel temperature sensor, whatever next? Could try making one out of wood I suppose
  15. Approx 4.5 litres for oil change including filter.
  16. When I took my daughter swimming a couple of weeks ago, turned into the last side road leading to the sports centre to be met head-on my someone driving on the wrong side of the road on their hand-held mobile! The law is just not working, some people will not obey. Have seen many people on hand-held mobiles since the law came into force last December, and the fact that police patrol cars have fallen by 12% in the last few years (as I recently read somewhere) does not help. Speed cameras are not catching the real idiots! Rant over
  17. Looks like I've got some competition at last..... My latest project, unfortunately, is to re-paint and refurbish a doll's house for my younger daughter. I hope it takes me less time the one I did for the older daughter - 2 years - mainly because of not using proper white, full gloss for the outside walls. After several attempts with water-based non-drip stuff, I sort of gave up on it for too long. This time round, no messing about, straight on with the Dulux!
  18. ...and some people get upset by the blue tint - my wife finds the light from xenons very annoying, disturbs her brain I think (more than usual anyway...) and I know she's not the only one to be affected by them in this way. Tried using front fog lights in snow, instead of dipped beam?
  19. Ah, this could get interesting.... :D
  20. You can't fit a rack under these covers - only option would be to remove the strips, headlining and fit complete roof rails (been done before and covered on this forum). Other than that, you will need the roof system brackets that clamp to the roof using the door apertures.
  21. Juddering and grinding - could be warped discs? or a stone trapped somewhere nasty. How thorough was the check? If it happens each time that you brake, then something should have been found.
  22. Do you have roof bars? Thule certainly do rails and feet for Gals with roof rails already fitted, and I'm pretty sure they do them for Gals without roof bars too, but obviously using different feet. Saw a Gal with roof rails the other day with a set of bars branded as Halfords, yet the local store's booklet indicates that they don't do a set for the Galaxy!
  23. Oh dear, not back to this again are we? I like the oval clock and its position :D
  24. There is a good technical reason that they gave me - cannot remember what it is so you will have to wait for their reply!
