  1. My booster heater isn't working this year. I get a nice cloud of white smoke each morning when I start the car up, but the aux heater fails to cut in. Do money to throw at getting it fixed, no confidence in a dealer to sort it, and I don't really miss it. So, it will stay broken for a while yet
  2. I had a similar issue when someone reversed into my previous car a few years back, although I had comprehensive insurance so I was able to get the estimate and repair work organised before the other driver notified her insurers. You should press your insurance company to contact the other person;s insurers and tell them that their insured has had an accident and failed to notify them. May be worth asking your insurers if small claims court action can be started against the other driver... in fact maybe your insurers should write to the other driver to claim, and then they will have to notify their insurers unless they want to end up in court. You have my sympathies.
  3. The rear wiper on my old Rover 820 used to come on if the front wipers were on, and you selected reverse gear. The wipers on my 1998 Scenic switch from continuous to intermittent when you come to a halt. Neither of these 2 features are fitted on my 2000MY Galaxy; it took VW/Ford several years to play catch-up, by all accounts
  4. Apologies for mis-editing the above post - something weird is going on. When I click on the icons under the post to reply or edit, something different happens to the description on them. However I do think that my words above are correct - the starter can only burn out if it's drawing loads of current and once the engine has started, there should be no power to the solenoid or starter itself. From listening to the engine with bonnet up, can you tell that the starter definitely stops once the engine has fired up?
  5. Thanks folks. Unfortunately I don't have a woman to feel :-( (I feel about 25 tbh), and I don't drink alcohol...... My "celebration" was to take a small 3-day holiday in Cardiff to see Wales Rally GB Millennium Stadium special stage and the official finish, plus walking round Cardiff. I almost drowned from the feet upwards in the rail, hail, thunder and lightning that settled on the roads and pavements. One of my colleagues was co-driving car 116 but they retired on Friday morning with serious engine trouble (brand new engine too, machining error by their engine builder) so he was on his way home before I even headed for Wales after work last Friday. Oh well...........
  6. I have been in Cardiff since Friday to watch some of the Wales Rally GB ... one of my colleagues was co-driving but they retired on Stage 3, apparently, so they may have well been heading for home before I even got there! Never mind,I saw the special stage in the Millennium stadium and the finish on Sunday afternoon, and got thoroughly soaked at least twice. Today was sight-seeing in Cardiff Bay before the trek back home. The M4 was peppered with roadworks and 50mph restrictions which boosted the mpg figure
  7. I beg to differ - there are many, many things worse that a car with no working brake lights ...... finding out that you are married to a schitzophrenic being just one
  8. If it really was a gentle tap at 1 or 2 mph, chances are that there is no damage at all (well, maybe if you get down on your knees and squint at the bumper when the sun is shining on it, you may notice some slight scuffing). It's surprising how a gentle tap can feel, and sound, so earth-shattering these days. Fingers crossed for you......
  9. This is a common VW-group feature, but unless you know of it, it's hard to figure out how it works
  10. It's there for me today, but it looks like you have not uploaded it to this site but used a link to an internet pic...if that site goes down, then your avatar pic will not show.
  11. Maybe your exhaust needs changing?
  12. Tempting to say that the picture is a might misleading .....
  13. If only it had a full-sized spare wheel and was a little shorter so it would fit in my garage (and if only I had the money ......)
  14. Yup, tried that but it doesn't work either:-( I have new unpainted covers that I want to fit, so I can see where all the clips are but it seems you need about 8 hands to prize the old cover off
  15. Anyone know the easiest way to remove the painted cover off the back of the mirror housing? I've lost the knack of hitting my carport post at exactly the right angle to do this, and attempts with screwdrivers to prise it off have so far proved unsuccessful
  16. That photo looks like a photochopped Touran; rear side windows are much too short for a full-size MPV
  17. Try eating crocodile sandwiches
  18. I think you should be limited to buying 2 houses in your own name maximum. Trouble is, how would it be enforced? Buy 2 in your name, 2 in each of your kids names irrespective of ages etc etc. National database of mortgages?
  19. Could be that the radiator is partly blocked - allows enough circulation to cope with "Normal" situations but when you are towing, there is not quite enough capacity left to give sufficient cooling
  20. IIRC it only reads the map CD's and you should have a CD changer fitted somewhere for your music - in the rear compartment or under the front passenger seat
  21. Glen, have you killed off the HP forums? Haven't been able to "open" them for a couple of weeks now.
  22. It's not that the wire is poor quality, it's the design that places too much stress on the wires. There needs to be a height difference between where the wires emerge on the door pillar and where they go into the door, so they twist more than stretch/bend. Unfortunately whoever designed this bit of the car didn't quite get it right, just like the person who designed my parents' first dishwasher. I ended up buying special flexible wire to sort that one out - and at mains voltage there was an interesting bang each time one of those wires shorted out !
  23. That will make it worse, not solve it !
  24. Try pulling the wheel down whilst an assistant slowly unwinds the release mechanism. You need to pick a dry day, wear old clothes and keep your fingers crossed
  25. (blush) ... I don't know what to say
