many thanks thats a new sensor i need my gauge never goes upto 1/8

Could be a partly open thermostat. On my first alhambra (96), some black gunge somehow got into the stat - enough to hold it open about 1.5 - 2mm and the coolant temperature dropped from the normal half way to varying between 1/8 to 1/4. Fixed under warranty.

My present alhambra (98) - 18 months ago the temp dropped from the normal halfway to approx halfway between 1/4 and 1/2. This happened shortly after I topped up my coolant with about 1/4 litre G12++. This was the first time I'd topped it up - it still has the origianl G11 factory fill.

I suspect that again some gunge has formed and stuck in the stat as the change was relatively sudden and it hasnt dropped since. My oil temps are running about 10 deg lower as well so dont think its the sensor. It also takes even longer to get to the new norm and the radiator runs warm when previously it was almost always cold (esp in winter).

G12++ is not supposed to react with G11 - the original G12 did and caused havoc with engines cooling systems. I wont be topping it up again I hope.

Did you ever sort out your gauge problems or not mine is a mk1 gal 110 tdi gauge just gets off the cold say 10 o'clock just off the white bit stat seems ok run for 10 mins rad cold 15 mins rad warm so stat working but booster heater is not most seem to think that's the problem iv'e changed the senser gauge now read a bit lower no faults on vag-com leave senser unplugged then G62 senser code so got to fix booster heater first

Mk1 booster heater doesn't kick in unless it's 5deg's C or lower, think I would still be inclined to change thermostat and seal first, it may be opening to early.

Hi Chris

i have got a stat here just seems that it's working

even after 100 miles still just off the cold on the gauge only ever got to O on NORM in traffic on a Hot day

do you know what senser controls the gauge i have changed G62 senser near the block is there another one

the one in the top hose near rad is third fan speed and air--con no codes in vag-com

hi my 1998 mk1 galaxy does the same i only baught it a few weeks ago and is first galaxy but mine usually runs about 2 or 3 mm into the 'norm' never been half way even sat in traffic just had diagnostics on (for the turbo problem)and it did not show anything to do with coolant/temp sensors i just thaught that this is what it ran at so if this is wrong then i would also be looking for a solution any help would be very grateful thanks

any body tell me where their temp gauge is when cars hot please ie 1/4 1/2 etc. mk1 99 tdi

Hi,should be straight up in the middle, any higher fans should kick in !if higher check fan BRY

if lower its costing you money in fuel! change thermostat anyway, only about 4 quid ,heat is obtained by holding water in block.vag-com probably not helpful in this case.

I have just bought a 1999 Zetec 1.9 TDI and on driving home (120 miles mainly motorway) I noticed my temp gauge doesn't go much above the start of the normal area on the gauge. I had this years ago on a Sierra and it turned out to be the sensor/probe. I see here that some say it could also be the thermostat not opening correctly. Is there a way to be sure of which it is ? The sensor or the Thermostat ?

think you have to remove the thermo put it in a bucket and see whether it opens/shuts,if it does then it aint that.

I can't find the thermostat location. Despite searching this forum and getting results of where it should be but when I look for it on my car there is nothing.

Also I am a bit confused as to the location of the Water temp sensor.

There is a hose coming out of the top right of the engine that connects to the top left of the radiator. Half way down this there is a sensor. Is this the one I am looking for?
