  1. Mines not available either :-( Neil.
  2. Hello all, I need a lower engine cover for my 1999, 2.3 and was wondering if the covers for all Galaxy engines and from both Mk1 and Mk2's are the same? I have read that the cover is too big to slide out from under the car. Will it fit in the boot if I find one in a breakers yard? How much should I expect to pay for a new cover and a used cover? Thanks, Neil.
  3. I have a bulge in the drivers floor in-front of the seat. I assumed this was normal. I'm not so sure now  Neil.
  4. I have always believed the law on speedometer accuracy was that they had to be accurate to +/- 10% at 30MPH, i.e +/- 3MPH. At any other speed they can register what they want and still be legal. I think most cars overread speed and distance so making themanufacturers look good. I always seemed to travel about 5+ MPH faster through my local 40MPH speed trap in my old Daewoo Nexia that everyone else and I never got flashed. After picking up my new Galaxy I followed infront/behind my Nexia for 150 miles and afterwards found it's registered cruising speed of 68-73 was registered as 75-80 in my Galaxy. Newness of tyres/tread depth could have quite a bit to do with it. Neil.
  5. I am used to sealed batteries with little green spots in my last two cars but my 'new' Galaxy has what looks like the old fashoned top up type that used to be in my fathers Cortina? My Galaxy has a lead Heavy duty battery and it performs very well (touch wood). How should I look after it to keep it this way? My father used to top his cortina's battery up with distilled water only. I have never heared of acid tablets before. Should I get some incase I need them and how will I tell if I need them? Thanks for any advice, Neil.
  6. Thanks Mumof4. I'll see if I can get my head a bit further under the car to see. I'm a bit wary of trying to lower my spare wheel as I may never get it up again properly  . I hope these D.O.T. figures have been going for some time. Neil.
  7. My 99V Ghia has a 215/55/16 sticker like yours on the petrol cap, and that's the tyres I have.. What sized spare did your's come with? Neil.
  8. I've go this sticker too. I've just noticed I've got a Continental Sport Contact 205/60 R15 95H as a spare tyre on a steel wheel on my Mk1. My other tyres are 215 55 16's just like Cepheus's. I've looked at my wheel changing equipment and it is as new/never been used. This is making me think that this tyre has been on the car for 9 years and should be changed. Is there anyway I can tell roughly how old the tyre is? Is this size of tyre/wheel compatable with the rest of my wheels if I do need to use it? From other peoples posts here, Galaxy's seem to start their lives wearing Dunlops (though the Galaxy's in my 1996 brochure have Continentals on). Thanks for the help, Neil.
  9. Has it been doing this long? I can't be sure about a Galaxy but my Daewoo Nexia did this for about 2 days before my clutch cable snapped. I think it was a frayed part of the cable catching on something as it was pressed. I hope this doesn't happen to you soon. Neil.
  10. Hello all, Would it be safe to leave the air recirculation on perminatly during hot weather with the rear quarterlight windows open slightly? Would some fresh air be brought in from the front of the car or should I leave the front windows open a crack too? My climate control isn't cold enough at 18C and blasts us when set to LOW. With the recirc button pressed there is nice COLD air without the fan going full blast. This might sound a strange question but I can see many vents for air to come out of but where is the air sucked back in to the air conditioner to be cooled again when the recirculation button is pressed? Is it correct that the recirc button automatically switches off after 20 minutes? My manual says I should make sure I switch it off myself. Thanks, Neil.
  11. Has anyone tried Avon tyes? At least I have heard of Avon and they seem to be at a sensible price. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...p;rd=1&rd=1 Thanks, Neil.
  12. Forgive me for still being a bit confused, but why would a 97 and a 97 reinforced both have the same max load rating? Could it be that some makers don't bother putting 'Extra Load' on their tyres because they expect people to go by the Load rating? This table from a previous post insists it is vital to use tyres of the correct load rating but has nothing to say about reinforced/extra load markings. Could this be because they are superfluous? http://www.tyres-online.co.uk/techinfo/load_indices.asp Thanks for the heads up on the Ebay tyre Mumof4 :-) Thanks all, Neil.
  13. Please can someone confirm that If a tyre has say a 95 to 97 load rating it will be Fine for a Galaxy even if it doesn't mention 'Extra Load/reinforced'. Are the numbers 95 to 97 enough to confirm that the tyre is up to the job as plain 97 and 97 'extra load' tyres would have the same maximum load of 730Kg? i.e could a 95 to 97 tyre NOT be Extra load/reinforced. Thanks, Neil.
  14. Thank you all. I'm now convinced that for the safety of my family I'd better get them changed soon. I will take it gently until I do. I've just had a quick look on Ebay and these tyres looked good and are at a Very nice price for 2 and will allow me to go up to 168MPH!!!!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/X2-NEW-TYRES-215-55-...1QQcmdZViewItem Would you buy them? Has anyone tried these tyres? If so do they grip well in the wet, wear well etc? Thanks for your opinions :-) Neil.
  15. Hello all, My new 1999 2.3 galaxy has 215/55/r16 tyres. The rears are Matador Aquilla 97H Extra loads (730kg), which look like they have taken many corners Much too fast but are otherwise sound, but I'm concerned about my front tyres. These look relativly new but are Nankang Ultra Sport NS-II 93V (650kg) . No mention of Extra load but only 40kg less max load than a 95 rating tyre. I have read on this forum that New galaxy's have come with 93 tyres and other people have 94's on theirs, and the rating is for maximum load at maximum speed, so will my 93 tyres be OK at no more than 80 mph. Would you change the front tyres for budget 95's? As the tyres are in good nik, am I likely to find a buyer for my part worn 93's on Ebay etc ? I have V rated tyres on the front and H rated on the back. Is it OK/legal to mix speed ratings front and rear? Thanks for putting my mind at rest, Neil.
  16. I've now got a Galaxy but I can't vote again :-(. Neil.
  17. Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a car fridge for camping. Is the Galaxy fridge better than shop bought ones? I have read that it heats and cools which sounds handy. If the fridge is left on in the car which hasn't been driven for say 36 hours, would there be a chance of the battery becoming flat (Mk1 2.3 petrol battery)? What is it's external size and internal food capacity? Has anyone used one? if so, would you recommend one, or should I just go for a cheapish new one frol Lidl as I haven't much money left after buying my Galaxy  . Neil.
  18. Thanks for all your answers, very helpful ;) . I missed that blue cover! I thought it finished the following day B) . Never mind, alteast I now know that any blue cover should be from a Mk1. I have noticed that the covers are different shapes. Either the Mk1 or Mk2 end flap is much less symetrical. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/Neilwuk/f57b_1_b1.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/Neilwuk/09a7_1.jpg This is my nearside rear wheel arch Big Kev. I have lower rear vents, but I have no idea if I get heat from these. I guess they provide heat and cooling controlled from the front climate controls. Would air come out of these whenever the rear fan is on? http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/Neilwuk/Loadcover1.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t244/Neilwuk/loadcover2.jpg My owners guide says you can have a heater button on the clock or the top button on the dashboard. Do these do the same thing? I haven't got either  . Neil.
  19. Thanks Gregers :) . I'll keep on looking then. Neil.
  20. You could make it more of a challenge by using nothing bigger than A roads to travel on, ie NO motorways AT ALL!!! I would think that this would make it a more interesting drive for the participants. It might also encorage a bit more sponsorship too :) . Mumof4 , why do you and others keep refering to your navigating skills? Have you had troubles with maps in the past? Neil.
  21. As the route is probably lands end to John O'Groats, would it bypass Wales altogether? What about a 3 Capital cities triangular route? A true country wide event then :-) Neil.
  22. Hello all, I would like to buy a tonneau cover for my Mk1 galaxy (it has the slots for it), but all the ones on Ebay so far have been Light and dark grey, black or beige. Did they ever come out in Blue? Would a tonneau cover from a Mk2 fit my car without adjustment? Thanks, Neil.
  23. I hope this isn't a silly question. I have looked under my new Galaxy and seen a sticker on my spare wheel which says it has a maximum speed of 50MPH. I take it that it is some sort of space saver tyre. Will my 215 16's fit where the spare lives if I do get a puncture? I don't fancy having 7 up and nowhere to put the punctured tyre! Thanks Neil.
  24. 1. Neil Williams. 2. Cardiff. 3. Galaxy Ghia 2.3 Ghia 1999. 4. 22 hours and counting :-) . 5. So far so good, so yes. 6. Nothing so far, but new back box needed soon by the look of it. 7. Pharmacy Technician.
  25. Everything I've read on this forum says it's good for the life of the car, but I've seen 2 cars on Ebay that needed/needing the chain changed  . I've just bought a 2.3 myself yesterday with 120,000+ miles on the clock so I'm interested in a definitive answer myself. I'm VERY happy on the whole with my new Galaxy. My family said it made them feel like Royalty :D . Neil.
