  1. 132k, thats not bad really. As has already been said, does sound like unburned[streamed] diesel coming out of the back, rather than head gasket problems. Which would put the problem in the injector timing area, which isn't much help i know. I asked about the mileage because a chap at work has just scrapped his mondeo est[n reg] Engine was knackered at 160k,but the plonker had not even changed the oil in god knows how long, and the problem came out of the blue and worsened so quickly it was amazing. Hoping its a easy[cheap] fix.....
  2. What is the mileage of the old beast? Inclined to hope seatkid is on the right lines, as an alternative could be worse....
  3. Next time it does it, pullover and switch off. Then re start if it feels better and revs beyound 3000rpm in 2nd gear then the car went into a limited function mode so to speak, possible due to overboosting. this can be caursed by a few things as mentioned already sticking vanes to the actuator not working properly. this could be due to the n75 control valve packing in this is an easy check so to speak just do a search of n75 control valve. dam just done a check.. nothing on the n75.......visit here.. usefull site http://forums.tdiclub.com/
  4. This is interesting, i have had problems with my instrument cluster, no dials or lights, not clocking any miles. I send it for a diagnosstic cneck and the cluster is working correctly. My car is a galaxy 1.9 deisel ghiax. how do icheck if the earth is working. can it be the coil pack. please help. i'm going out of my mind Just to let you know, that it cannot be the coilpack,as diesels do not need them, although a faulty or broken earth connector could be your problem.
  5. Not crap, but not any use for keeping the turbo clean,as those additives are for fuel lines, the turbo only deals with air. Clearly not up for the stripping down of the turbo then? don't blame you,as its just as lickly you have a sticking actuator or you n75 valve is faulty,or a vacuum pipe has a leak, the list goes on and on. I would start by doing a search of turbo faults in the archives and seeing which ones you feel you can check out yourself.start with the simplier ones vacuum pipes, n75 valve and actuator ect ect before worrying about the internals of the turbo. if the turbo is indeed the problem, theres a place at nottingham that reconditions them for around
  6. If you get no joy from the above proceedure, then all is not lost. These guy can clean the turbo for you, unlike so many so called turbo speicalist they actually can and do rebalancing too. http://www.midlandturbo.com/index.html
  7. "Even if a medical condition is the cause of falling asleep at the wheel, it is not an excuse in law." What would be?Lets assume a heart attack or a stroke and taken place instead. Would you still think that this was not an excuse in law? Lets hope he losses his HGV licience at the very least,or his firm founds it hard or very high insurance premiums, make him uninsurable.
  8. all things considered, i have to say its not too bad, afterall bought it with 100k on the clock and at a knockdown price, i would say well worth it. would consider a volvo t5 est with lpg instead though, i do miss the extra woosh, but need a biggish car for the caravan.. having said that would also consider a 2.8 galaxy with lpg.....

    Mpg's

I beg to differ, mot emission tests will not meet the conditions for egr operation, there is no load on the engine and combustion temperature will be too low even when revving the engine. Toyota explains egr operation here very usefull, and interesting... if you have a petrol engine! as that is for a petrol engine!!!!
  10. And Italians............ :(

    Mpg's

I stand corrected! I was nearly right though! LOL I had read though that the EGR valve on 1Z TDI's are active UPTO 3000rpm. I once hooked up to VAG-COM and the ECU was requesting an EGR percentage from tick over. Can't remember the exact details though. With the 1Z though, EGR was like a bolt on extra for an engine not origianally designed around EGR. I believe later model engines had the EGR system incorperated into the whole engine design. ECU monitoring etc. which makes it far more difficult to disable the EGR without throwing up faults from the ECU. you are correct. a normal working egr valve that is seating proper, is closed in a cold engine it opens up with the revs, once warm. It will be closed under wide open throttle and also starts to close down slowly as more throttle is used. So in the mot emissons test you will see that for part of the test,it will indeed be open, [warm engine throttle being applied] now most cars do not need the throttle to be on the floor to be reving at stupid revs, and as the engine has no real load on it the egr valve could be slightly open. this would also explain how when dis connected you emissions were lower,as the valve was always closed. From an engine piont of view the egr valve is a waste of space.but from a poison gas piont of view [NOX] it is helpfull.
  12. Did driver A stop? would like to thing so,as he shares responsibility, but alas driver B is not innocent. sure driver A has made it difficult but driver B should have stopped earlier as you say the incident went on for some time, even if it meant doing a emergency stop to outwit driver A who is clearly a dangerous idiot.
  13. viamichelin.. if you did not know, its a good site for varioys routes you could take. I would surgest not going straight through paris[some routes do say to] tolls varies from 10 euros to almost 30 euros[i am assuming le harve to eurodisney] if you have a sat nav, then check what route it gives you compaired to the routes on via michilin, see if you like it. good luck and have a good time.
  14. Indeed I haven't, as the overwhelming majority of lorry drivers are very professional and do not speed and the restricters fitted no not stop them speeding. (dipping the clutch/placing in neutral/just not braking going downhill, will cause the vehicle to exceed their restrictions). Going back to the weight/mpg issue, if mpg does not increase when going uphill, then an increase in energy is not needed to overcome the effects of gravity therefore the momemtum of the vehicle would not have any external forces applied except drag/friction, therefore I could in theory attain the same momemtum with a 50cc engine. NASA are gonna be p155ed when they find out they could launch the shuttle with nothing more than a fart! Gio you talk a load of B******* and to trounce Newtonion Physics just highlights your ignorance, To nitpick and place sarcastic replies to everyones posts is not going to win friends, anyone can become a keyboard warrior and take any persona they like, I for one do not like yours. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_velocity. here you go just for you! The question was not the rights and wrongs concerning speeding! but how a mass moves! which means your reply was more than a little nit picking it was totally off topic! and by trying to use NASA ! in you argument you have really lost the plot. Clearly you do not know what you are talking about "drag/ friction" friction is an externally force of gravity! re read your post. Then re read my earlier one about not a "major issue" of corse you would be right if one was trying to drive up mount everest but alas i do not believe, that is on the m1 ! "sarcastic replies" yes i remember the one about going to another forum? no sorry, that was you.!
  15. you have clearly never seen a restricted hgv lorry come past at a very unrestricted speed downhill ! Feel free to quote your school physics lessons on the subject!!! "Kia sedona" now that is ugly! "forum too" no one forces you to read my posts! maybe you should try some self control rather than telling someone where to go, unless you are willing to take your own advice!!!
  16. Im not going to rant, far from it. Lifes too short...more important things in life than MPG. By the way, thank you for calling me a lady, dont get called it very often..B1tch is usually what i get called. I would never ever call you anything but a lady. being rude is one thing, but bad manners, not exceptable.
  17. I believe i said it didn't play a major factor should have said normally! no more so than does drag, butyou got me there though up hill dam, shame there are no down hill sections though because that would surely more than balance it out!
  18. maybe you should read all the posts again, as "everyone" does not agree with you either over this issue ! and by the way my galaxy does not do over 50 mpg normally that is true, but lady dont make the silly mistake of presuming anything concerning why it does not! The reason it does not is down to choice my choice as to how i drive, swiftly and safely, and not down to any sort of ability issue. Cannot for one minute see anyreason what so ever that getting 60 mpg would be a problem for me except for boredom! and respect for other road users. Clearly you cannot see my point what so ever, as i do not dispute it, but dispute the fact that the only way to do so is not using normal driving for the majority of the driving puplic. Also i feel some have a fixation with the magic 50 number, i mearly would like to point out that 75 is the new 50 so if you read my previous post, you will see that i found it extremly funny that fuel economy and the galaxy are forever being mentioned in the same breath! like 50 mpg is something great! in todays car market! "unfair" there is nothing unfair in comparing the punto to the galaxy! the galaxy has a diesel engine that is sopposed to be 20/30% more effiecent, and the fact that your own allie SK claims the drag of the galaxy is merely 0.34,{the punto is no better} and that once moving weight does not play a major issue . " source bmw" then yet again you do not know what you are talking about! and now i await your rant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  19. Bit of a weight difference between a Galaxy and a Punto though. Not a fair comparison. Like to see ya get 7 in a punto legally! If you have option of having 2 cars to choose from all well and good. Me personally, i'd sooner have 1 car that does the lot. Welcome to the Sharalaxy! "does the lot" by what definition ? does it do the lot? As for the 7 seats bit, am i to assume that you bought the vehicle with this as its main priorty? if so you are a point. if not again we are talking mpg are we not? "Not a fair comparison" actually it is,you started this thread on mpg, therefore mpg is the issue size and weight are not. I am only putting things into perspective maybe a decade ago 50 mpg was indeed something, but not today not even for the inferior mpgs that a petrol car gives. and infact even a lot of petrolcars can give this mpg without the need to go to the extreames that some go to,to aquirre their figures. like i said i bought mine to tow with, i expected better mpg without the need to drive in a different fashion to what i usually drive. therefore in comparison to the numerous diesels i have owned and sticking to the same driving style, NO i do not found the galaxy to be as economical as other think, but i found it practical to tow a caravan and loaded with luggage for 2 or 4 people. Note if i did not have a large caravan, the truth is i would not keep or need the galaxy,i would replace it with a queiter and more economical car.
  20. them vectras are petty good on long runs, hired one back in 2001 a 1.8 drove 2500 miles for our anual holidays at an average of 42 mpg! and i drive neither conservative nor at a 100 mph.
  21. i am indeed glad you are happy with your galaxy,i bought mine as a towcar but it has proved itself to be a decent vehicle. "last laugh" not sure about that bit, i assume those who have bought expensive gas guzzlers did so because they could and they can afford to run them too. I only get around low 40s mpg out of my galaxy 50mpg was achieved over a 500 mile run through italy austria germany to fill up point in luxemburg, which i was not totally happy with given that the same run took 1.5 hours less in my other car whilst still achieving over 50 mpg. My point is and has always been if you use the same driving style that some use to get pretty good mpg out of their galaxies and apply them to other cars, then the mpg of the galaxy would be pretty good, but not that good. ie, i get low 40ishmpg out of the galaxy on my regular run.If i use the wifes punto [petrol] and it take my the same time to get there i get mid 40mpg whilst using cheaper fuel.
  22. But it is still a normal cold engine and therefore will not be any nearer to its proper running temp.It will however be easier to start as there maybe no need for the glow plugs to work overtime or the possibility of the battery under performing, but never the less a cold engine still. And remember this was a tip for better economy in the first 10 miles nothing else.
  23. HELLO GIO! SURPRISED TO SEE YOU HERE! :40: Some of us have attached/integral garages. Some of us have well insulated garages that driving a hot engined car into will keep warm for several hours. Some even have both! But I accept I know nothing and I bow to your superior knowledge on all aspects of our beloved galaxies. why are you surprised? you invited me,with your sarcastic post that was clearly aimed at me! But i am not surprised that you have a insulated garage, just surprised you didn't go the full hog and mention you have slolar panels as well! As to you sarki reply " bowing to my superior knowledge" lets get this bit straight, it really is irrelevant what garage you have, you offered others advice as to keeping their garage warm ! not a cost saver and frankly all it does is cost energy, that you will not gey back with a slighly warmer car for the first ten minutes of driving. based on price of keeping garage warm v fuel saving over 10 minutes. although i did note you did say ten miles, whats that 15 minutes driving? Well there you are if you drove the car from start up properly, then it would be warm in 10 minutes rather than the 15 it takes you! now then you would make a small saving!
  24. well, i did not get the quote off an agricultural site....i didnt search tractors at all...cold weather effects on diesel and i only looked on car sites.. i give up..not trying to help again this eve..some bugger else can search the thousands of links. mumof 4. please look at my link, interestingly you will see that it is almost indentical to your own link. problem with the internet is one site will knick another siteS info to use, without checking out the facts, be it cooking site or diesel site.also info can become outdated. eg. not long ago diesels had a better co2 rating than petrol and lpg vehicles, but now lpg has lower ratings , so what was true only 5 years ago has changed, and will change again too. Modern diesel engines come fully equiped for the area they are meant to run in.so in places like sweeden they have fuel heaters fitted standard,we in the uk as a rule do not need them. the fuel we use is also changed seasonally so again as a rule we do not have the problems of a couple of decades ago. But the battery thing is always a good idea because of the effort needed to turn a cold diesel engine.....
  25. Actually in cold weather do not forget the importance of having an excellent battery.
