I have the standard fascia blank which i bought for my Focus. I don't think it looks that bad but, I think this is what you've already got. See what you think. Searched for ages and could not find anything for the Galaxy. Would be interested in any other solutions though. Did have the one gooner52 had but preferred the standard blank. Sorry gooner -

I think you may find that the coding of the dash ecu will have to be changed. This code can vary depending on language variant, type of engine, country, etc. This will probably mean a trip to a Seat dealer or somebody with VagCom who also has access to the coding variants. I am not aware of any option to alter this without diagnostic tools but, if i find out I will let you know. This coding option is normal for VW group vehicles. -
NikpV You're right, the cambelt can snap which is obvious when the top cover is pulled back. Also, as you say, the cambelt can strip its teeth which isn't so obvious. This is why I suggest trying to turn the engine by hand when viewing the cambelt. If the crank turns and camshaft doesn't, cambelt damaged. It is rare that the cambelt will fail with stripped teeth and not be noticeable though but, is a possibility. Still wouldn't bump start it though, just in case the damage is, at present, only a couple of valves! Bump starting it could completely wreck the engine. I have seen camshafts snapped in to 3 pieces on these engines after cambelt failure. thecodfly We may be barking up the wrong tree and some more info may help us to diagnose it for you. One thing that puzzles me, is the noise. Can you describe it? How old is your Escort Van? After the initial failure, you said you could crank the engine. Was this cranking faster than before i.e. with no compression from the engine? The early 1.8 diesels suffered more than the newer ones with cambelt failure. The alternator belt used to fail on them and jump over the crank pulley and get tangled with the cambelt. Modifications were carried out to prevent this on the later ones. Is your alternator belt still on its pulleys? ld

Dave-G, I must admit, I did think about giving up when I hit a brick wall but, I don't like being beaten! Thanks to mumof4, I hope her judgement is now proving her right. I don't disagree that restrictions should be in place to prevent unscrupulous members wasting time but, it can be a bit offputting. At one point I thought "they obviously don't want my help"? Anyway, glad to help where possible, LD :) -
Please Look At My Aux/tensioner Belt

Hi Lim, The shaft that holds your tensioner wheel is obviously working its way out of its housing. This shaft is secured in place by a bolt at the other end. It appers to me that the bolt has either come loose, snapped or maybe the shaft is broken. You need to be looking further at the back of the housing. If you remove your ribbed belt the tensioner will probably come all the way out of its housing. Look at the diagram, the bolt I am referring to is Item 11. littledaz -
1.8 diesel Ford engine is notorious for cambelt failure. Just in case this is your problem I would not advise bump starting as this could cause irrepairable damage. Before trying to bump start it, I would try to turn the engine by hand and view the cambelt to see if it is turning. If this is OK then try bumping it. My concern is the fact that the engine just stopped whilst it was running, the starter should not cause this unless it is constantly engaged.

I seem to be unable to receive any email notifications of posts I have replied to or created. I've looked at my settings and selected Immediate Notification by default. I have checked my email address which is correct. I have been registered since 10th Jan and not received one notification. Any post I have created or replied to has the Email Notification box ticked. I have checked the Help section and followed its instructions. I know my MSN account is OK as I have received emails from other sources and my Junk email folder is empty. Please help anyone. Oh dear! It would seem that your pulley is indeed seized. The test can be carried out with the alternator on the car. It is the resistance of the fitted belt that gives you the ability to turn the alternator fan blades. If, when you are trying to turn the fan in both directions, the pulley is trying to turn also, it is seized. As I said in my test instructions, if the pulley is OK the fan should turn with very little effort. As an update to my test, the freewheel direction is clockwise. (I've just been out and confirmed it on my Galaxy). littledaz

Hi jackthehat.co.uk, I'm pleased to hear your car is rectified. I tried to reply to your post on the 10th Jan but had problems with registration. Bad timing, sorry. :huh: Don't get me wrong, there is every possibility that this issue can be due to worn belts and/or tensioners and they shouldn't be overlooked. My check of the alternator pulley will, hopefully, help owners that have been advised that their belts & tensioners require replacement and are still suffering with the issue. All components should be checked but, the pulley can be checked in minutes and can save alot of time and money. When the pulley seizes, it obviously places undue stresses and wear on the belt and tensioner, which is why replacing them can cure the noise temporarily. I have heard of dealers fitting power steering pumps and racks to some vehicles and still having the problem (very worrying). Nevertheless, I do hope yours is sorted and it would be good to hear if it lasts. Regards, littledaz

Dave-G, You are quite right, the alternator is the issue. The actual fault is the pulley on the alternator. It is supposed to freewheel in one direction, if it seizes up, it causes the symptoms described. It is usually available as a separate part to the alternator at VW/AUDI/SEAT dealers. It seems that quite a few of you are suffering from this. From the description of your symptoms, this sounds identical to the issues that I have successfully rectified on Audi models at my Audi dealership that share the same engine. First of all, this mainly affects the diesel models as they are the VW group engines. The noise is due to the ribbed v belt bouncing around on the pulleys thus loosing grip and creating a squeal. The reason the squeal is worse when turning the steering is due to the heavy load from the pump. Anybody that thinks the alternator is the cause is correct, well almost. The faulty component is actually the alternator pulley. It has a one-way clutch built in to the pulley which allows the alternator to freewheel in one direction. When this pulley seizes, it causes the belt to load up on the tensioner side causing the tensioner to spring back. This effect then causes the belt to be slack in certain places, mainly at the power steering pump area, causing the noise and rough steering feeling. You can usually view this by the tensioner bouncing around at tickover when it should be steady. The more load on the belt, the noisier it will be i.e. on full lock. There is good news and bad news. First of all, hello to you all. I have been an avid viewer of the forums since buying my Galaxy in May 2006. I decided yesterday that it was time to join you and contribute where necessary. I would like to reply to the posts by 'snikkers' & 'jackthehat.co.uk' with reference to their alternator issues but, I am unable to. I am a Master Technician at my local Audi Dealership and as most of you are probably aware, the 1.9 tdi engine is shared with the VW group. The A4, A3 and A6 use the same engine and obviously shares its components. I have come across the alternator/belt squeal issue many times and have rectified it successfully. I have tried to reply to the posts in the technical section but, I cannot get past the "You do not have permission to reply to this topic" message. Moderators, can you tell me if I am restricted from replying in the Technical section and if so, where can I post my solution so that 'snikkers' and 'jackthehat.co.uk' will see it? It seems silly that I have to submit 30 replies to posts when I can't even reply to the one's where I can probably help most. I'd hate to think that people are wasting good money on belts and tensioners when this often does not fix the squeal issue. Please help and advise, Darren.
