what you have to remember is it's a 13 year old car lots of other cars by now are in the scrap yard, you will get problems these are a family hack only get serviced once a year if lucky or when it breaks down, on the forum you only hear about the problems never the praises mine is the same 1999 ghia 110bhp tdi auto with all of the same problems as yours mine has a full service history main point you need to sort out is when it last had the cam-belt changed not a service item by the way but an extra on a service 40.000 miles on these should have had later cam kit fitted by now so up to 60.000miles i believe broken cam-belt scrap car unless you are good with spanners the mk2 gals seem to suffer more problems than the mk1s all the best and welcome to the mad house :D :lol: :31: :rolleyes:

turbos are normally exchange units the europarts one has a

petrol engine revs more than the diesel box maybe the same but diff ratio will differ best trying to get one from a tdi

go back to the dealer tell them the heater is poor and it's not getting hot enough as its under warranty then they can't say you have voided it by DIYing it yourself in case other problems arise point out the fact you have run it in real time and it is running cool

as above drill it out just had to do one on the rear of mine, you could try blowing round the senser with a air line Mine had picked up a small bit of magnet but could not clear it so new senser loads on fleybay

are the revs to speed the same in auto and in tiptronic my 1.9tdiauto mk1 at 70 rev counter is lower than speedo in lock up mine is AG4 box though non tiptronic will up date next time i'm on motorway

without getting it up in the air and the belly pan off it's the how long is a bit of string thing could be a collapsed CV joint allowing drive shaft to come out of gear box could be clutch flywheel related or diff broke is the case broke you need to have a better look first then report back pref with pictures

try putting 12volts direct to the motor not sure think it's a two pole motor switch just reverses polarity

Hi bigdave let me think Choke that's the little knob the ladies pull out to hang there handbag on true story i had to go out with said dear in a Ford Anglia 1200cc super to access here driving and that's what she did also worked for Vauxhall when they went to the FD victor it went from three speed gearbox to a four speed column change man complained about bad economy he went from Leeds to Glasgow and back in third gear both true i had to go out on road test with them me been in and about the motor trade for 40 odd years my MK1 has booster heater too but needs looking at glow plug i suspect that on the to do list

quick update temp gauge since replacing thermostat now seems to run at the Ron the NORM bit so just over centre on the gauge MPG has improved locally by at least 9 mpg on shortish runs so happy with that just need to fins a wiring diagram for the fans still don't seems to work at all so maybe another wire is broke i have repaired one on the top hose senser getting there the thermostat the was replaced was a VW/audi genuine one replacement from factor seems to open a bit later but both opened when heated in a pan new one seems to open about 3% later then the original one so never ever fit a thermostat without testing it

thanks Chris might be worrying but don't want to set off for a day out and cook it it's taken me now on and off 3 years to find a half decent MK1 ghia tdi auto body work has the usual scrapes and rims scratched body is very straight inside is mint 6 seater all with captains seats all works apart from air-con full history loads of bills etc not many decent MK1s out there

thanks Chris what i am after is what senser triggers the fans or is it the ECU it self so i can trace the wiring i have now changed the thermostat the one i put in states 87c same as the one i took out but heating them both in a pan with a digital thermometer the new one fully opens at 90c the older one older one opens fully 85/87c on a run yesterday temp gauge got up to O of norm so i would have expected the fans to come in but no but on the same short run MPG on trip went up from 19 to 26 MPG so 7 MPG difference on a short 4mile stop then 4 mile again run is a big plus on the diagram on elsa it show the senser near the head controlling the fans 1 2 the one in the top hose controls air-con and 3rd fan speed Haynes is no good on this elsa only gives me diagrams on my version with no part nos

Hi all needs some info on the cooling fan wiring mine don't seem to work There are 2 sensors in the top hose, one nearest the head supplies the gauge and the ecu the one in the top hose nearest the radiator does the third fan speed and air-con My fans don't seem to work at all if i short across the pins on the top hose 1 fan goes full speed when I plugged in vag-com no faults found apart from air-con no gas also been having problems running too cold changed the thermostat now seems better temp up to normal or just above this gal has three relays near N/Side headlamp also has 2 big round long resisters under battory looks like same wiring from fans when i got the gal one wire was broke off sensor in top hose 3rd fan speed so resoldered that any ideas anyone :lol: :angry2: :unsure:

Hi Chris i have got a stat here just seems that it's working even after 100 miles still just off the cold on the gauge only ever got to O on NORM in traffic on a Hot day do you know what senser controls the gauge i have changed G62 senser near the block is there another one the one in the top hose near rad is third fan speed and air--con no codes in vag-com

Did you ever sort out your gauge problems or not mine is a mk1 gal 110 tdi gauge just gets off the cold say 10 o'clock just off the white bit stat seems ok run for 10 mins rad cold 15 mins rad warm so stat working but booster heater is not most seem to think that's the problem iv'e changed the senser gauge now read a bit lower no faults on vag-com leave senser unplugged then G62 senser code so got to fix booster heater first

that's the fuel pump for the heater ticking that's normal i would be looking at the pump on the bulkhead they normally pack up at 100000 ish or below depends on use when you changed the thermostat did you check it by hanging it in a pan then heating it it up to see if it opened and closed ok the stat needs to hang on a bit od string so as not to touch the pan a thermometor help tp see if it open at the right temp as well (never think that just because a thermostat is new that is works so many problems caused by cheap stats)
