Thanks for the replies. I was wanting to have a look at doing this job myself for the same reason Topbloke said that garages tend not to bother even though it is part of the service schedule. I've only just recently got the car and obviously can't vouch for where the last owner got their diesel from but I buy from one station only so if any water does show up from now then I know who's door to go knocking on!

Does anybody know if the fuel filters on a TDI (PD) have a facility to drain the water from them or is it necessary to replace the complete filter?

Ford dealers don't know jack about what oil should go in the TDI Galaxy. I telephoned 3 in my local area and they all insisted on using 5W30 Semi-Synthetic. Despite quoting the VW505.01 spec and also WSSM2C917-A spec they just said that their oil "would do the same job" and if I was to get it serviced that's what oil I would get. What is their problem?? I advise everyone to double check what oil they are putting in (as well as the amount!)

Looking to get some oil (Ford SD 5W40) for my TDi but having problems with two local dealers. One swears blind that it should take 10W40 and if it was having a service that's what oil it would get. The other dealer also swore blind it was 10W40 until I persusaded him to check out the car's VIN and Reg Plate on his computer to double check. He was astounded to discover that it takes 5W40 and so were his other workmates. Aren't Ford great? I told him it was "Ford SD" oil that I was looking for but the best he could manage was "Ford S". This is a fully synthetic 5W40 oil and says it is suitable, amongst other things, for diesel engines. Is this oil okay to use and does it differ from "Ford SD"???

A free standing crate also prevents your dog from leaping out of the boot when you open it. I don't believe the Ford guard caters for this.

Spoke to Ford Direct who said that I'm free to have it serviced by any VAT registered garage so long as they use Ford parts to do it although they would prefer it if a Ford garage done the work. Yeah, I'll bet you do! :lol: I know what you mean Ivor about saving some money but I reckon dealers have had it their own way for too long now and it's time for the consumer to hit back and keep that hard earned cash in our own pocket.

Hi, I got my 53 Galaxy diesel from Ford Direct too but no oil spray under the bonnet I'm afraid. Not too certain on how to remove the engine cover. I know the dipstick must be removed and I think the cover just pulls off. Remember with Ford Direct you can return your car for another without any questions so long as you've covered no more than 1000miles and no more than 30 days since you took delivery.

Does anyone know if a Galaxy purchased through Ford Direct must be serviced at a Ford Dealer in order to maintain the warranty? Ideally I would like to take it to an independent garage (VAT Registered etc...) Thanks.

I'll bet they weren't too slow in asking for the money though !! When I went to collect mine they forgot that I had paid a deposit and were asking for the full amount. When I jogged their memory, they said "Oh, oh yes I forgot about that. Your quite right." Dealers. Don't you just love 'em !! :lol:

Does anyone know why the Galaxy has an ON/OFF switch for cruise control? What is the point?? :ph34r: My last car had cruise and you could activate it whenever without having to first switch it on!! Is there a problem just leaving it in the "ON" position all the time? Regards.

TomTom Go is a great idea but for the same money (and quite often less) you could use the TomTom software on a PocketPC (such as an Ipaq) and have a separate GPS receiver. I use an Ipaq 2210 connected to a bluetooth GPS (which is located behind a trim panel in the boot). When your finished with the SatNav feature you then have a fully functional Windows PocketPC. Bonus!!

Since getting the car yesterday I've racked up 500miles on all types of roads and different loads and all for Avg 46mpg. You can't beat it!! Especially since my last car was a 3.2 Omega Elite Auto and I was lucky to get 25mpg !! I hope to contribute to the forum wherever possible as my experience of this car increases. I was under the impression that an 2003(53) Galaxy Ghia TDi would have an auto dipping rear view mirror. Just got my Gal yesterday and it doesn't !! :ph34r: Now I'm thinking it's the 2004 models which have this unless it was originally specified as an option. Is this correct?

Any suggestions for this then? I picked up an Oct '03 TDi Galaxy yesterday with 4700miles. It's reporting a service is due in 2000miles. Shouldn't this be about 5300miles instead?

I bought a tool from Halfords years ago to help with this. I can't remember how much it costs but with the caliper off (and the cap off the brake reservoir) it consists of two metal plates and a bolt. You put one plate against the cylinder and the other against the inside of the caliper. The bolt threads through both of these and you attached a socket and simply wind the cylinder back in. 2 mins of a job.

Vitrocmax, I wouldn't even attempt a 700MB download via dialup. Using broadband it takes approx 4hr's to download a similar file so for dialup your probably looking at next year ! I'll see what I can find that is available to download.
